Never understood the appeal of Manga and the like but I'm heavily into western comics like Batman, Spiderman etc, however I really hate it when people generalize the whole format and call it childish, some of the most mature story's I've read come from comics.

Lot of children's books deal with heavier subjects than adults ones so childish is not always a bad thing anyway.

Like all other media, some Manga is good, innovative, ingenuity the rest is written for thirteen year old girls copies of the same thing.

It comes down to your tastes and as far as medium goes I guess it's better than some American/British/other comics. Although I'd like to add that Watchmen is the best comic book ever. No exceptions.

I might be going out on a limb here, but a manga is a comic. Meaning that it has many, many genres. Most of the popular stuff right now might be crap, but the same can be said about movies, tv shows, and western comics.

In all honesty, I never read any manga. Mostly because 90% of them consist of rehashed ideas that weren't interesting 10 years ago. But some shone through the muck. Most notably, AKIRA.

I'm not a big fan.

I can understand why people like them (apart from fangirls and fanboys. Those people are fucked up).

I'll read regular comics but I just don't let the Manga and Anime style of drawing I guess I prefer the men in the comics to actually look like men and not 13-year-old girls

I like them, but it's very selective these days, since Naruto and Bleach are more flashback and filler than anything else, so you have to dig to find anything decent (Kino's Journey, Hellsing, R.O.D. OAV, IMO).

In fact, I go to art school for sequential art, and my work is both American and manga influenced, but you know what?

I HATE THE ANIME/MANGA FANBASE.

I know it's probably the same in annoyance as a stereotypical fat, smelly trekkie, but at least they speak English (unless it's Klingon). I would like to punch every person who arbitrarily ends their sentences in "desu". I feel like I'm going to be like Miyazaki, working on what I love while hating my fans at the same time. It's not like ALL the fans are bad (after all, I consider myself one, doing research on the series' I enjoy and finding a level of intellectual enlightenment in the ideas they offer, say, if it's based on a certain mythology, I use it as a springboard to read into mythology further, while also allowing other people to speak if, say, the disagree with my fandom, it's a free country). Fans who keep things in moderation and aren't stupid jerks to people, basically.

Also, weird hair colors are weird. Unless their hair has been dyed, stop giving people naturally blue hair unless there's a really good reason.

At the same time, I hate how America likes to generalize anime/manga style to pointy chins and huge eyes; I believe manga is a form of storytelling. After all, when people mention American comics, they probably think about huge muscle men in tights, and we know that's not EVERYTHING here (at least, I hope not).

I guess what I'm saying here is I really dislike the general stupidity a lot of people have attached to anime/manga, but it's got a lot of great stuff to offer, if you just keep your eyes open.

Some are good, some aren't. Depends what you like really. Tend to go more towards the Korean ones for some reason, the art style just seems more complex or different, like Priest

Nonsense. I think you should read something like Watchmen before you condemn such things as childish.

The arguement that they're not proper books is completely irrelevant. Whether or not they're proper doesn't mean anything, I don't read manga because I love reading great literature, for that I read what you would call proper books. I read manga because they often have entertaining plots, or meaningful plots*gasp* yes it's true, comics can have meaningful plots too! Now before I ramble anymore, I'll get back to the point. I quite enjoy manga, there are some that are childish perhaps, but there are many that are not.

I have a group of friend's who just love the Japanese stuff, anime, manga, culture and 2 of them want to move there when they are older.

What do you think of Manga book's then?.
Manga is the Japanese form of a comic book. If you can't bring yourself to at least try a good manga(nothing with naruto on the cover) then I would just tell you to get new friends.

Side note: when it comes to reading Manga or Comic books, it isn't all about the reading, it is about viewing the art style. In many ways they are superior to regular books for this reason and it can spark an interest in the art. (Not to say there is anything wrong with a good book.)Also, even if you aren't imagining what Spike looks like for yourself, it does not mean you will not imagine the story in new ways. If your imagination gets limited by reading a comic, then you never had much of one in the first place.

I tend to prefer books to manga, but I have the same opinion of comics.
Ocasionally, I'll find one that interests me, but the art style of many is too daft for my tastes.

They're just another form of comics. It's no worse or better than normal comics or books.

I enjoy reading manga often, but honestly eventually most become a disappointment. The plot loses focus eventually becoming nonexistent only to end openly far too often. One Piece is still awesome though. That happens a lot with comics(Basically any of the big superhero comics) and tv series(Heroes, Lost, Sliders) too though.
