Am i the only who reads this statement as "EA told us to do this or we get the whip again"

Honestly I'm now convinced EA is going to make bioware turn ME3 into "Mass Effect: Future warfare" and it will lose any chance of being the epic ending fans have been waiting years for.

But thats my opinion whats yours
As I said in the other thread about this, I'm not worried.

I figured when they said Holiday 2011 they meant next year in the first place, so all this announcement was for me was a confirmation of what I had already suspected.

As for the "appeal to larger market" statement, for me, means that they want to get more people to play the franchise. So they're brainstorming ways to attract people. I'm not even necessarily sure it will even involve huge changes to the game. I believe Drew Karpyshyn has had this story largely fleshed out for awhile now, so there won't be any changes for the most part there. Casey Hudson has made it pretty clear they will be sticking to a similar formula that Mass Effect 2 had, while brining back some more RPG-like elements. I don't think there's anything to be concerned about.

That said, EA is a money monster, and I wouldn't put it past them to ruin a franchise (sort of did this with Dragon Age II, but thats another story). Up til' now EA has, for the most part, let Bioware do it's thing.

Mass Effect was awesome, Mass Effect 2 was also awesome. As long as Bioware is still behind the third one, then I have no doubt it will keep it up to Bioware's usual standards.

Honestly, I'm a little pissed about them continuing to talk about stream lining and making it more accessible to anyone, when Mass Effect 2 was streamlined so badly that it was hardly an RPG anymore.

Though, this is giving me deja vu about Dragon Age 2.
Personally I got ME2 because I enjoyed the story and action from ME1, definitely not because of the excessive amounts of RPG elements, even though I consider myself an all-round gamer.

I will agree that widening the scope of a game usually results in disgruntled fans, and a dumber crowd.
Oh no, I'm not saying ME1 was any better than ME2, I can't even play ME1 after playing the second. I'm just saying that BioWare, instead of actually fixing the things that were wrong with ME1, just removed them completely instead. I was hoping they would change that with 3 but it doesn't sound like it.
As far as I know we only received a trailer and some screenshots, so it's too precocious to be drawing conclusions like that at this point.

It'll undoubtedly be dumbed down, we wont see extensive RPG elements like we would have before this announcement, so yeah, it will probably suck, just so EA can suck a few extra dollars out of it, and then toss the franchise. It may not, but likely it will, which is sad since the Mass Effect narrative is a Really good one.

Given that I loved Dragon Age 2 despite it being toned down...I believe Mass Effect 3 will bring on more of the same goodness. So long as they continue to give me choice in my PC creation and learn from the recycled areas mistake, the game should be a strong candidate for GOTY 2012.

Oh yeah, I totally agree, it's just that what has been said from BioWare/EA does not give me a good impression of where they are going with the game.

It's pretty sad how so many people (english-speaking, no less!) don't know the difference between 'streamlining' and 'dumbing down'. They're two entirely different concepts.

Mass Effect has a good following, I think that even EA knows that it's a bad idea to piss off fans.

Firstly, what's your source for the EA statement?

Secondly, Mass Effect 3 is not doomed to fail. The Bioware/EA combination has done good things in the past and so far there's no reason to think otherwise. Besides, a comment like that could mean anything. It could mean they've decided to strip out endless loading screens and pictures of the ship for good old fashioned witty banter elevators.
Look around, its new news on HERE so yeah...

EA is probably learning from its mistakes. They tend to do that.

I mean, they've made some massive ones, but most don't happen more than once.

They may be realizing that rushing out a BioWare game is a bad idea. My hope is that giving them more time will produce a game less of a spectacular disappointment than DA2.

I did look around. It'd just be nice if people referenced stuff.

I don't think it's doomed. It will do well, and from what BioWare has been saying, it sounds like they found a nice balance between Mass Effect's and Mass Effect 2's combat systems.

I do question the wisdom for delaying the game to make it so it appeals to more people. Who would watch/read/play the final part of a trilogy without having any prior knowledge about what's gone on before? Especially something that story-heavy, like the Mass Effect series? Seems a bit foolish to me.

I still think that quote has been overblown.

It was said during an EA conference for investors. The way I see it, BioWare/EA delays one of their AAA future releases so The Money at EA and their investors want to know what's up. EA assures their investors by speaking their language, saying that the delay is to maximize the game's reception and what not to bring additional returns on their (continued) investment in their company. i.e. "we're making the game better, might have overestimated our workload" If this were some kind of conference of gamers- the message would be translated for them as to what they're doing or actual gaming changes. Investors aren't entirely concerned with all that in the end though, most likely just their returns. Securing or assuring the Investors/The Money is always a good thing, though.

I really don't think EA would really fuck with what BioWare has going on. Not when they're working on a follow up to such a highly-regarded game from both fans and critics- not to mention a ridiculously profitable one. The Dragon Age comparison is different, I think, far less exposure, as a whole than the Mass Effect series. EA isn't dumb enough to fuck with a good thing.

I think one sentence is being blown WAAAAAY out of proportion.
Everyone really needs to chill out and wait for actual gameplay to make any judgements.

no, as much as i hate hearing "targeted to a larger audience" this was for shareholders, they have to tell those guys something that relates to "growth" in their book and in the entertainment industry that means : larger audience

Oh come on, we haven't even seen any gameplay. Chill!
I have faith in Bioware, but that has diminished greatly lately. So I guess I'm cautiously optimistic, and if nothing else I'll get it for the conclusion of the story.
