Just wondering what everyone prefers to play through as: Hero or (sorta) Anti-hero in Mass Effect. This can be for the first one or second one. And this can apply to the decisions throughout the game and the ending, or just one or the other. Personally, after I played both for either game to see both possible outcomes, I always play paragon. Whereas KoTOR had me celebrating the demise of everyone around me and giving me free roam to destroy everyone's lives around me, Mass Effect was the first game that actually made me feel guilty for treating people like dirt and making Shepard act like an unreasonable jerk. And while the renegade Shepard does do some impressive stunts, the paragon Shepard does pretty badass things as well. So, I'm content to be uncompromising paragon once I've played through at least once with both endings. What about everyone else?

As much as I'd love to be a total Jerk. I just can't help being nice to people. Even if it is in games. I ended up being Paragon. A bit like the signal box at hull station.

In the first game I went almost entirely renegade with my first character and entirely paragon with my second, but in Mass Effect 2 I started off as renegade with my first character (carried over from me1) and moved towards a more balanced play style towards the end, being nice to my squadmates but mean to most others. As for my second character, she stayed super paragon.

I just can't bring myself to make the renegade choices, even though I know it is just a video game I stil feel bad if iI make choices that I know will hurt someone, real or not.

I played through the game as a paragon. Though I did choose the renegade options whenever I felt they were appropriate. I definitely prefer playing through as a paragon, this essentially applies to any game with that decision.

Why pick one? I go on a case by case basis, trying to pick the right choice. Then I play once doing all the opposite choices just to see the other side. Since both sides are shades of grey and there's no giant bonus for sticking to one side there's no reason to pick one side and follow it. In case you were wondering I ended up 3 parts Paragon and 1 part Renegade.

Renegade, biznatches! ( I just really, really had to say that)
I played through ME2 as a Paragon once, just to see how it all played out. It sucked! As a Renegade, all the jerks in the game get exactly what they deserve, you get to punch a disrespectful harpy in the face, you get all the cool lines, and fricking glowing eyes. Paragons get to do none of that.

Actually, there is: If you go all Paragon or all Renegade, you get Charm or Intimidate dialogue options that are not only really cool sounding, but that make getting your way a lot easier.

Paragon.

Or as Yahtzee would put it, taking the Captain Picard route in the Mass Effect series.

True, but there are situation where only one applies, which means that those who swing both ways gets an advantage. It's an advantage to focus, sure, but not a very big one. It's also not like you get half priced force powers. Besides, you can still hit 100% for one side even if you score some points for the other side.

Can't help but be Paragon.

Even if I try and make a total ass of a character I always end up nice-ing up. Unclear grey alignment choices can keep me going, but at some point there will be a "give medicine to the sick for a reward or send them to the halls of eternal agony for all eternity" choice that totally ruins it for me. Being evil for the sake of it doesn't work for me (mostly).

Renegade, because the paragon decisions bore me. In most other games I go good guy.

EDIT: I always end the mass effect games with the paragon choice, because I feel like I wasted my time if I get the evil ending.

I always played Renegade, but not to be a dick, but to be direct, fast, and decisive. I don't mess around in chat, but I recognize it can get you things. Like kill characters who could kill you later or make life harder get stabbed with welding torches and pushed off buildings. But in conversation, I don't act like a terrible person all the time, I'm just to the point.

Well, my main character is almost 100% Paragon, but honestly, Renegon is by far the funnest way to play.

I mostly play Paragon, but I do choose a few Renegade options because I would actually do it.

In ME2, I enjoyed getting in the faces of the C-Sec officer and Volus who were harassing the Quarian about a "stolen" credit chit. ME2 Paragon was definitely more badass than ME1 Paragon.

I feel very odd and off-put when I play anything other than Paragon...in any game.

Mostly Renegade. I was a Complete Pragmatist in Both Games. I let The Rachni Queen live ONLY because she would probably help me. I let The Council die, etc.
In the Second game, i REALLY like the Scars of Shepard so i was a bit of an ass. However, i still dod some Good things[sub]All in the name of Pragmatism[/sub] Saving The Krogan Cure being one of them.
