I was thinking about buying Mass Effect 2 upon its release and figured that playing the first Mass Effect game was probably a good idea (especially since it was only £3 on Steam). My problem at the moment is deciding which class to choose. At the moment I'm leaning towards Adept and Vanguard but I'm not sure whether to go with Solider instead because of the ability to carry different guns capable of dealing with any situation rather than being bound to close range.

Long story short, I need help choosing which class to go with. If you vote, please leave a reply too with the reason for your choice.

Thanks :)

For the first playthrough, Soldier. Until you get really used to how it works, having skills in every type of gun is worth more than Biotics or Tech. Definitely branch out on later playthroughs, though, I play Engineer now myself.

I've always stuck with soldier, though halfway through my second play-through i wished i'd gone for a class that better used the biotics.
Soldier makes a great class for a first time blitz through the game until you understand half the abilities and uses for them.

Vanguard is my personal favourite. A nice mix of weaponry, and Future Psychic Mind Killing Powers.

I prefer soldier. Your guns are always more effective than your powers; just like Bioshock. Though in Mass Effect they are still some value.

I personally like the Vanguard. Right now, I'm playing through as an Adept. The only class I've completed the game on however is the Soldier.

Vanguard if they get to wear heavy armor this time around. Otherwise, soldier.
Edit: Just watched the vanguard video, and apparently they are going to be able to be the close range class. Close range is the most personal range, and the range I am going to be at. Vanguard it is.

I strongly reccomend Vanguard, it's very Brutal and it means you can use force powers biotics and close range attacks too their maximum abilities.

First choice
Adept, biotics are now much more powerful than they were in the original game and I want to try that lift/throw combo we saw in the trailers.
Second choice
Engineer.........Cryo Blast

In the first Mass Effect I played as a Soldier, never really wanting to use Biotic or Tech abilities. Now after seeing the Vanguard trailer for ME2, they look totally badass! Then again, I've always played the tank/melee dps classes in RPGs.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I get the feeling that the vanguard is a tank without armor, the charge ability is great for getting in close range and that mixed with the biotic ability it will allow the vanguard to do some pretty impressive damage but without any heavy or tech armor your life expentancy in the middle of the combat zone is going to be pretty short

First play through soldier, after that I went to infiltrator, but I made the mistake of doing the hardest difficulty with a brand new infiltrator...bring wrex and dump all his skills into anything that keeps him alive. Trust me.
