Should go soldier if you're just looking to race through the game. Bring Tali or Garrus for your decrypter and whoever else you want. Soldier is untouched in ease of play, with all 4 weapons open to you, with assault rifles being the most powerful and fun to do weird stuff with and once you do the specialization mission you can chain immunity to become invulnerable.

In ME2? Pick whatever, you'll be allowed to change class from your ME1 saves, and there is more to the classes now. Me? I'll be infiltrator. >:D

I was thinking about buying Mass Effect 2 upon its release and figured that playing the first Mass Effect game was probably a good idea (especially since it was only £3 on Steam). My problem at the moment is deciding which class to choose. At the moment I'm leaning towards Adept and Vanguard but I'm not sure whether to go with Solider instead because of the ability to carry different guns capable of dealing with any situation rather than being bound to close range.

Long story short, I need help choosing which class to go with. If you vote, please leave a reply too with the reason for your choice.

Thanks :)
I strongly reccomend Vanguard, it's very Brutal and it means you can use force powers biotics and close range attacks too their maximum abilities.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I get the feeling that the vanguard is a tank without armor, the charge ability is great for getting in close range and that mixed with the biotic ability it will allow the vanguard to do some pretty impressive damage but without any heavy or tech armor your life expentancy in the middle of the combat zone is going to be pretty short
Not at all! You can level up to medium armor and using biotic barrier you can become unbelieveabley tough. I've survived three rockets with this combo.

Infiltrator worked for me first time round.
Same here, unless a Krogan Merc happens to decide to shotgun your face by slipping by your allies.

Also, it would seem that BillyShakes has taken a liking to your previous Avatar

Definitely use a biotic class, unless you want to use soldier the first time like some people are recommending. I've beat the game thoroughly six times, and I've always liked biotic best. And there are no more armour restrictions for ME2, and you can change your class at the start of a playthrough, so don't feel too constrained. Good job for playing the first instead of just buying the second with no idea about the story, simply because other people are. (Sorry, pet peeve of mine.)

I will not use mixed classes in the first game.Biotic/Engineer/Soldier only.
I find that when you choose mixed classes, you get the less effective powers/abilities.
My Soldier/biotic (Vanguard I think) couldn't take a hit and didn't have any of the good biotic powers(in my opinion);the same thing happened with my soldier/engineer and my biotic/engineer(the latter being the worst experience ever)
So, I learned that: weak armor+bad abilities+No health regeneration= Epic Sadness
Making full classes better for my style of play.
But from what I'm hearing, the mixed classes are being amped up a bit so I plan on giving ME2 the benifit of the doubt and giving the classes another chance.
(the crappy powers of engineer/biotic made me hate Kaiden, as he spent most of his time on the ground, sleeping in his own blood)

Vanguard if they get to wear heavy armor this time around. Otherwise, soldier.
Edit: Just watched the vanguard video, and apparently they are going to be able to be the close range class. Close range is the most personal range, and the range I am going to be at. Vanguard it is.

First choice
Adept, biotics are now much more powerful than they were in the original game and I want to try that lift/throw combo we saw in the trailers.
Second choice
Engineer.........Cryo Blast
All three of you, reread the OP. He was asking for the first game.

Soldier. Than you can choose companions based on "who you like" not "how strong they are".
Eh, I still picked based on how strong they were. Tali and Liara are the best squadmates for a soldier.
I agree, it's always good to have a balanced squad.

Vanguard rules over all in ME1.

With tactical armor and barrier, you are a tank.
With shotguns and warp vulnerability you can hit like a truck with shotgun blasts.
With throw and lift you have excellent crowd control.

And the best part... With assault training, you can throw out powers like crazy, hit adrenaline chanelling and use them all over again. You can't do that with an Adept.

Best class, period.

I usually go Infiltrator or Soldier. You have to be careful though because you always want to be sure you have someone in you party who can do Electronics and Decryption so you can make sour you always get the max amount of loot.

Otherwise, I haven't really noticed and huge differences between the classes. Some of the Biotic and Tec abilities are nice, but it's just as fast and easy to mow everything down with your best gun.

Soldier, I'm fairly unimaginative and I prefer blasting things with my future space gun then using biotics.

Soldier.

When you unlock the Spectre Master Gear assault rifle, you will be an unstoppable force of death.

I usually Bring Garrus and Wrex along too, for some tech and biotic help.

Liara and Tali can be heplful that way too, though you'll suffer in combat.

Yeah...yeah you can. Once you get a good Biotic Amp and a good level, your cooldowns are next to nill.
Vanguards can have a good Biotic Amp AND Adrenaline channeling...

IMO, soldier, cuz Ashley is a soldier, and I find her to be the least appealing character. So I'd rather cover her role myself, then use Tali and Liara to have specializations all across the board. Being proficient with all types of guns is nice, and you can still order your "spellcasters" around, same as if you had those skills yourself.
