Poll: Miscarriage: A capital offense?

Ok, so this is clearly not something that the majority of people on the escapist would consider to be acceptable, and I would like to point out before I go into this that personally I think that this lawyer is misguided, however:

Assumption One:
-Abortion is wrong, it is killing a baby
*this is clearly something he believes*
Assumption Two:
-Miscarriage due to alcohol and drug abuse is effective Abortion
*This is possibly true, but it's very difficult to prove the cause of a miscarriage one way or the other*
Assumption Three:
-Baby-killers should be put to death
*something that on its own, if you advocate the death penalty (I don't) is easy to believe*

Logical Conclusion, if you accept all the assumptions:
Drug/alcohol caused miscarrying would-be mothers should be put to death.

Again, this is not something I agree with, I would like to stress that, however you can see how this person who in my opinion is misguided would come to their conclusion.

I would say that he will never get this law passed, and so just leave him to piss and moan and shout and preach in a corner. He's going to achieve about as much as if he asked for god to smite them personally, so just leave him to it. The worst thing he can do is cause people who have miscarried for this reason to feel remorse, and that's not necessarily a bad thing, pregnancy comes with a lot of responsibilities.

OK first the role of a soldier is to fight and if neccessary die to defend people who can't defend themselve. You fight to defend your city not to protect the pretty pretty buildings but to make sure the people inside the city have a chance to save themselves from the invading soldiers. As for poor poor Iraq the reason why few prominent countries joined you in you peace-keeping (I have never seen the English language more grossly applied)is because their politians all saw that this was about retaliation not to topple a Hussain and free the people, hence why my former prime-minister has been answering some very difficult questions at a number of hearings to see if Great Britian's involvement in Iraq was justified, if not somebodies going to have to get himself a good barrister. The tragic irony of Iraq being that the speading uprisings going on in North Africa and the Middle East right now it is more than possible the Iraqi people would have risen up on their own to topple him. So many lives lost in the name of democracy, a system that can and has gives powers of responsabilities to men who want to kill women for something beyond their control.

Iraq had nothing to do with democracy. The government might have made a nice presentation saying this but there were a lot of ulterior motives. Most people in this country (and yours too) can't see past lies presented by those in authority. I'm not defending the war, I'm saying the one with the biggest stick makes the rules. There is really no such thing as "humanity" per se. Humans are not automatically rewarded rights because they were born. We're not in Star Trek were we all fight for the common good. When I said peace-keeping I was being extremely sarcastic. There's no such thing as an armed peace-keeper. Using the threat of violence to keep the peace is self-defeating. It would most likely be used to punish mothers who miscarry through drug or alcohol abuse.

Also, it's not Georgia or Georgia lawmakers...it's ONE lawmaker in Georgia.

I'm not so sure, this ONE lawmaker seems to have some pretty absurd ideals on women's rights. The newsclip that the OP referenced says that he also once tried to make a law that would "turn rape and domestic violence victims into accusers." He seems to be just one bad apple, though. In this enlightened society, I don't think a law this ludicrous would get passed, even in the middle of the Bible Belt. I mean, they already have Rowe V Wade passed, and this would completely overturn that.

If this gets enough headlines, I highly doubt this guy will be elected again. Especially if he puts this issue on his running platform.

I can understand perhaps wanting mothers to take responsibility and not drink/smoke/do drugs while pregnant, but this would be going WAY too far. I know that this'll get shot down in seconds for being a terrible idea, but the fact that someone could come up with such a plan makes me sick.

I am unspeakably disgusted and appauled that such a thing would even cross the mind of a person let alone make it into a bill.

I know a couple who are very dear friends who lost a child and it was world shattering and heart breaking and the thought of my friend being brought before a court then killed for something she couldn't control makes me feel physically sick.

Every child born is a blessing, ever death of a child before it is born is a tragidy and a heart breaking moment for a couple.

Let us all hope (and if you're that way inclined pray) that this bill goes away and never sees the light of day again.

First off, this is obviously a hype video. OP, if possible please link a better article or video that actually gives an explanation of the bill, rather than simply two people going "blarg evil honk blarg republicans blarg honk".

Secondly, the bill itself [http://www.legis.ga.gov/Legislation/20112012/108128.pdf] says (in regards to prenatal murder) that "Such term does not include a naturally occurring expulsion of a fetus known medically as a 'spontaneous abortion' and popularly as a 'miscarriage' so long as there is no human involvement whatsoever in the causation of such event."

Thirdly, the intent of the bill is anti-abortion (with the usual anti-race suicide undertones). The intent is to criminalize abortion in all forms, which includes inducing a miscarriage. It does not criminalize a natural miscarriage, though I can definitely see the potential for abusive enforcement of the bill should it become law.


These things said, I would like everyone to read controversial bills, stop watching hype media, pay better attention to what is actually happening before forming/slinging their opinions around.

First, I sincerely hope you go into/are in a field that involves mediation or arbitration of some kind, because you posted the actual bill and, instead of gloating about being the only one to do any real research, simply ask that people think before acting.

Third, from your repeated use of 'blarg' and 'honk', I get the feeling that you watch Red vs Blue, and I commend you for that.

OT: If Fox News were covering this, they'd say that anyone against the bill was a new-age hippie who thinks that responsibility is for old white guys in suits. Know your source. MSNBC leans left, so they creatively omit vital details about the bill. Fox would have creatively omitted that the guy is a nutjob who wants taxes paid in gold and silver coins.

A good rule of thumb for news stories: If they bring in an outside commentator, the report is skewed. The outside commentator always has an agenda to further, and TV news is currently the best way to do that. In this case, it wasn't one Messiah-complex-addled lunatic, it was a grand "Republican war against reproductive rights".

Everybody can find news reports that paint one party in an awful light. Please don't be the one to start a political news clip war.

How is this even being put into consideration? Miscarriages are a normal and fairly common occurrence and most of them take place in the first trimester. It's not implausible to have one and not even know it. Better yet, how will this even be enforced? Are they going to have people going around checking every woman in the state each day to make sure they didn't miscarry?

The process of how people like is are put into a seat of power and influence will forever baffle future civilizations that succeed us.

man and woman have argument. Woman is pregnant. Man gets pissed and throws a football really hard at her stomach. She had a miscarriage. Man was charged with manslaughter.

It all depends on how the law is set because where something like what happened above is definitely something that deserves jail time.
