Three way tie between Blood Gulsh, 2-Fort, and Rainbow Road.

All three of those maps have stuck with me in some fashion.

I probably should of replaced Python with something else. I just wanted a non-Fps map besides Rainbow Road and it was apparently the most popular starcraft map right now(could be wrong though). If I remade the poll I would replace it with Final Destination from Super smash brothers. The reason I didn't include Dota was because like people said; it's the only map sans a few holiday variants so all of it's fame would pretty much come from the game itself and not the map on it's own merits (I also don't think it has an official name).

I don't really play multiplayer games, and even I've heard of de_dust. So surely it's gotta be that? :p

I voted Wake Island as best from this list, as being a BF freak and haven't played any of the other maps on the list. But the maps that have my best memories are Carentan from CoD2 and Battle of the Bulge from Battlefield 1942. Those 2 were the maps I played when making my babysteps in online gaming

CTF-Face comes to mind. Distinct bases, many sniping positions, and good teamwork needed to capture the flag.

Q3DM17 'The Longest Yard'

Maybe I'm just old though.
Aw hell yeah. Longest Yard is definitely a classic.

Other classic battlegrounds:

Quake 1's DM6
Halo's Valhalla/Ragnarok
Gears of War's Blood Drive

Based on the poll options, I have to go with de_dust. If only because of it's affiliation with de_dust2; what with de_dust2 being quite possibly one of the most famous maps in gaming history. Not to mention creating a design philosophy and representing an experience that not only defines Counter-Strike but many online FPS games in general.

But I'm curious why the Dota or League maps are absent from the list. By shear gauge of popularity I'd think a very large number of gamers; and possibly non-gamers; would know of it. I'm also curious why Facility is in there instead of Temple.

In fact, I'm surprised none of the Left 4 Dead maps/campaigns showed up in the list. There are quite of lot of gamers that would recognize almost any of the iconic names of those campaigns; even if they'd never played. Not that I'd pick the L4D maps as the most iconic, of course.

Still, decent list that covers several genres.

Now let's start a poll for the worst multiplayer maps.

My vote goes to just about any map CliffyB made for Unreal Tournament...

Wait, de_dust? Isn't dust 2 the popular one? At least it is in my area. I can't remember playing a round on the original dust in ages.
Yeah, Dust2 is the famous one. It's the map name people who've never even played an online FPS recognize as "that Counter-Strike map".

Out of the ones in the poll, de_dust. But overall it's de_dust2.
Of that list, I agree. Not entirely sure why the OP named de_dust.

The reality of the situation continues to defy the silly beliefs of most of this thread.
Rainbow Road is back AGAIN in Mario Kart 8.
Twice, actually.

Rainbow Road 64 is returning revamped, in addition to a totally new completely crazy Rainbow Road made for MK8.

The most famous track in every Mario Kart. Mario Kart being one of the most famous game series of all time. A series that has had 11 very successful games spanning 22 years.

All the silly little FPS maps are NOTHING in comparison.

I voted for Blood Gulch only because of Red Vs Blue. The Map itself is alright but I prefered another map in Halo (I forgot which one it was).

de-dust and its successors, most likely. In as much that they tend to be used as the stock image of that genre, or at least was for a long time.

But perhaps it is Rainbow Road. I wouldn't know, I haven't even ever owned a Nintendo product, which probably makes my thoughts on the matter rather skewed.

I'm going to echo what many here have already said. For me it would be:

Quake 3: The Longest Yard (DM17)

Unreal Tournament:
CTF-Facing Worlds
DM-Deck 16
UT and UT 2004 have so many I remember, but I'll go with these two.

Starcraft: Lost Temple (I don't know why the OP picked Python over this one.)
