Whilst awaiting a download a song came on and I thought "I am not playing minecraft, why am I listening to this song? Silly Jake..." in my best Team Fourstar goku voice.
So dear forum lurkers do you listen to music whilst gaming? What kind of music for which games? hWhy or hWhy not?
In answering my own question I only listen to music when I am a) playing Halo/Mass Effect multiplayer with my brother or b) during marathon minecraft/terraria sessions with my girlfriend and company.

Depends on the game. Borderlands, for example, is a music game whereas FFXIII isn't. As for what type of music, it's mixed. Sometimes I'll even put on a podcast playlist and listen to that.

Try playing the entire Two Steps From Hell collection on shuffle while playing something like Skyrim.

While it does detract from the original soundtrack, it really is quite the experience all its own.

For me, it really depends on the game. If the game is more on the casual side, like Rush, Eufloria or EDGE, the music/audio is not that important, like WoW or I've played the game several times before, I usually have music, like DA:O or KotOR(atleast in the beginning of the game), I usually have my own music, instead of the game audio in my ears.

As for what kind, it's almost always my usual music, trance, nothing special for a specific game/genre.

All the time, but I generaly don't like the music in most games. Alice in Chains is great for shooters & listening to The Mighty Mighty Bosstones make me want to play FF8 for some odd reason.

Only when playing MMOs, Pokémon, League of Legends and Skyrim. Even then, it's only sometimes.

Soundtracks can be really good, but it really starts to make the game less fun to play because it starts becoming REALLY repetetive.

I only listen to my own music when i'm playing League of Legends solo. It helps to ease the pain of the amount of team rage you have to deal with...

Seriously if one more person KS!!!!'s during a team fight I will have to abstain from Wild Growthing them out of the next attempted gank. It's the only way they can learn.

Also playing through the combat challenges in Batman: Arkham City is improved tenfold when you have the Gurren Lagann soundtrack blaring through your headphones... But then again, what doesn't the Gurren Lagann soundtrack improve?

All depends on the game. If it?s multiplayer or an open world game that lacks any real kind of soundtrack then yes I will throw on some music that I feel better suits where I am and what I am doing.

:p I'm pretty sure the only applicable answer here is going to be "Depends on the situation."

For me the situation boils down to "Is there important dialogue that I'm going to have to pay attention to?" As such, for single player RPGs, I don't listen to my own music. Conversely, since there's no story to multiplayer, I often listen to music while playing multiplayer.

But even for the CoD campaigns, I tend to listen to my own music. Half the time the sounds of war are too loud to hear the dialogue in those games anyways, might was well turn the TV down and turn my computer speakers up and kill some terrorist bastards while listening to Disturbed's Indestructible (cliche, I know, but fuck you. :p).

Depends. If it's cutscene heavy, or listening for footsteps/shots is important, then I won't. If it's a fun mess of a game I'll blast that iTunes!

I tend to listen to video game music even when I'm not playing video games, so the gaming industry essentially removed a step between me and listening to my music as I game.

Depends on the game.
RTS/Turn-Based/MMORPG games and such? Yes.
RPG/Shooters/Stealth/Narrative games? No.

Depends on what I'm playing.
Say, Killing Floor, then I will but something like Skyrim, no.
Listening to Cage The Elephant is an odd experience while playing some games...

When I play TF2 I often listen to DnB or other fast-paced music, it helps me Scout a little better. It's the only game where I do so, however.

Depends on the game.

I play music while playing strategy games. Sometimes it feels quite epic (I hate that word) seeing your strategy come together listening to some good music.

As for shooters I prefer to not play music. Hearing things in the shooters I play is important. Sometimes I play music playing games such as Skyrim but I turn it off when I encounter dialogue.

Captcha: Good work. I feel special now.

After a while I get bored with the ingame music, so I'll play my own. Of some games I played years ago can still say what music I was listening to while playing it (Muse on the Phon Coast)...

There are certain games mainly in the stealth genre where you really need to listen to the in-game sound. But if I've gotten familiar with a game or I've heard enough of the soundtrack, then yeah sure.
