Hey, in addition to my earlier thread-peice, i have come to the conclusion...
ALL music has the same roots. to begin with, it started out as some old shizzle like a lute, and it has slowly progressed AND BRANCHED OUT!!! Rap and hip hop do have the same roots as rock, of all kinds... think about it, all music has one thing in union... a backing beat. Surely at the beginning of time, all that they made was a drum made of some animals skin. Technically, ALL music is the same. However, over time, artistic license and peoples own preferences have divided a whole thing into sub sections...
I know people are going to have preferences, however, please just know that all music comes from the same source. (at least, IMO. I'd be delighted to hold a debate over this. Just please be slightly intellectual and give reasons for your arguments, otherwise it WILL become null and void. Cheers :D)

I am currently listening to mainly Hip Hop (Buck 65, Sage Francis, Bike for three), Death Metal (Job for a cowbow (their second album) and Opeth) and Indie Pop (The Grates, Feist).

What is this? You have three kind of metal but you don't put Hip Hop up there.

I could go on for ages as to why Hip Hop isn't as shit as you think it is but it would be like talking to a brick wall.

All I can say is, expand a little bit. Musical Diversity is one of the best things in the world. The way I see it, I love music, so why not listen to as much as I can? I couldn't imagine sticking to one genre..

This poll is slightly biased is favor of rock, however I don't care because it doesn't affect me.

My favorite genre is Grunge, which is technically considered punk. My favorite bands are Foo Fighters, Puddle of Mudd, The Offspring, Three Days Grace, and of course, my personal favorite, the first and best grunge band in existence: NIRVANA.

The poll has three separate kinds of metal but only one for everything else? Biased much?
Sorry, it is a little biased. I started out with only one metal option but there was a bit of complaining on the first page. I changed the options in regard to what people were saying, and nobody chose/said anything about pop, so i replaced it. Also, given the fact that i decided to let my thread take it's own path after i watched it for some odd 10 minutes, I didn't see any feedback on options etc. after that. And another reason it's biased is because i like metal XD.
Your poll options are fail.
It should go like this
-Classical
-Blues
-Jazz
-Rock
-Metal
-Hip-hop
-Dance

Okay?
That's the way it goes.

Not true.
Almost all classical music has no "beat" as it is mostly known.

Yeah.. Sorry Kenny, you're not quite right here, and even in that parts that you are right, it isn't valid.

First, music comes from culture, and saying that all music comes from the same place implys that there was only one culture. I don't know how far back you want to go, but I'm sure most music started with "a drum made of some animals skin" what is diffrent between cultures is how they used it. Eventually some cultures put down the drums and moved on, others developed their drumming. Like Berethond said, Classical (western music) isn't known for its beat, where as African and Indian music is. Then the 1800's and slavery rolled around, this introduced african rhythms (mainy Sycopation and the idea of the 'off beat') to the harmonic structure of Western classical and created early Jazz and Blues (there is also some middle eastern influnce but thats for another day). After Jazz and Blues we all know what happened, 50 years later, we are where we are now.

Now, saying all music is the same so we can't debate it is also wrong and void. If popular music was the same as it was in the 50s (pretty much, early rock and roll and thats about it) you could say that, but over time there has been countless outside influences in popular music. Because of this, its hard to tell what is what. I mean, think about all the diffrent sub-genres of metal (legit sub genres I mean), sure they all came from the same place (Black Sabbath and Led Zepplin), but they are so radically diffrent to one another.

In conclution

All music did not come from the same place and even though Popular Music did, nowadays it is so radically diffrent from its roots it is hard to tell.

PS: Pardon my poor spelling, I have no spell check on this computer.

Alright, first off, to all of the posters on here, i realize my options suck. I was feeling in a particularly stupid mood when i made this poll. And the reason i never fixed them was because I am a 15 year old honors student with all sorts of things to do, so a poll I made on the escapist doesn't exactly come first on my list of priorities.
And about musical diversities, even though I mostly listen to power metal, and there's a lot of variation between power metal bands, I don't stick to one genre, I listen to rock, metal, power metal (there's a big difference between the two, trust me), alternative, and some other assorted stuff.

Good Point, thanks for giving a valid argument instead of shooting it down (Y)
There is not point trying to argue back, as i see the logic in all of those statements, and have no arguements backs, apart from one... Can you not count the tempo/speed at which the music is played as the beat. i know most things conform to an 4/8/12 'beat' (number of notes played within a set amount of time, this does not imply Beat of a drum solely)? Just a question, throwing it out there.
However, i would advise TRYING all types of music before shooting it down. I started out liking Eminem (i laugh at myslef, but it has turned out to be a nifty little party trick :p)and i now prefer mostly rockof all kinds... a big step, i think you'll agree.
Also, other friends have found their taste changes with time. dunno why, just seems too.

EDM for sure! I've been going to raves since 96, second generation raver...woot woot!

Second generation not meaning family lineage, but rather the second generation of people who went to raves. No, I'm not a kandi-kid, I'm old school, there for the music damnit!

Heavy Blues Rock.

Think Aerosmith. Or Chuck Berry by way of Whitesnake, with lots of George Thorogood and a huge helping of Led Zeppelin.

It's the music I play, listen to, and love.

You should probably include an Assorted Blues option, you never know, there are some of us out there.
I think I love you man...

Zeppelin, Whitesnake, Aerosmith and Motley Crue FTW!

Grunge has little to do with punk. It is best described as Alternative Rock.

It has it's roots in hard rock or heavy metal at the time. It progressed from wanting to retain the feel of angsty metal but cutting the excess.

Alternative Rock was formed, and the term 'grunge' coined by Mark Arm of Mudhoney, (but before he formed them) and it was used to describe most of the similar sounding bands that came from Seattle... Nirvana (who most certainly did not start grunge, they merely became the largest commercially), Alice in Chains, Mother Love Bone (later became Pearl Jam), Mudhoney and Sound Garden.

Varied, but mostly metal, especially melodic death metal, such as In Flames, Children of Bodom, Soilwork, etc. But I listen to most genres.
All bands you mentioned have turned away from their death metal roots, and turned into Alternative Metal/Metalcore groups.
I don't care much for genre. They make music that I like, that's all that matters.
