And if you think that a general Black Metal tag could go on just any band, that just shows me how little you know about metal.
Oh, an "unholier than thou" elitist. Take that shit to Youtube where it belongs.
Awesome! Someone who knows nothing about metal, but attempts to criticize me anyway!

Calling me an elitist isn't going to change the fact that you're wrong, bud.
I think he was going on at the fact that metalheads often act all elitess about obscure bands and look down on anyone who likes popular bands who they view as having sold out. I gathered all this from some thread yesterday.

I called you an elitist because your comment reeked of "I'm better than you." I said the the genre "suicidal depressive" black metal sounded stupid and a simple "black metal" should be sufficient. You decided that the difference was so obvious I should know of it, and decided to belittle me instead of trying to explain it.

Mayhaps being an ass wasn't your intention, but that's certainly what you achieved. Way to go.
The only ass here would have to be you, seeing as you're not accepting the fact that you don't know what you're talking about. Go to any metal-centric forum to chat with people who've been listening to metal for 10+ years, and I guarantee you, you'd be laughed offstage.

Simply put, if you don't like being corrected, stop quoting me.
I've been listening to metal for 10+ years, thank you. I'm sure a lot of other people on THIS site have as well. I wonder if they know the difference between "suicidal depressive black metal" and regular black metal.

I don't mind being corrected, so long as I learn something from it. So, explain the difference and we can end this farce.

Punk is rock.
Hip-hop and rap are the same thing.
Punk rock, rock, hip-hop, and rap, as you list them, are all actually forms of jazz.

With different names.

So, the choice is Jazz or Folk.

I choose both.

Also, where is classical?
How dare you forget such amazing music?
Citation needed!

I'm not seeing how Punk, Rock and Hip Hop are forms of Jazz. Unless you are going with the 'all modern music came from Jazz.' If that is the case, not only would I dispute it, it is unfair to call it that because it has been diluted so much.

If we look at the progression of The Blues into Metal. It starts with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, it is fair to say they are pretty damn bluesy but once the 80s came around most of the traces of blues in Metal were gone. Nowadays, its harder to find a metal band where you can distinctively hear the blues, sure that's where the music's roots are, but 50s years of musical evolution has diluted it.

Also - I find Classical far to rigid for my liking.

I do subscribe to the "all modern music came from Jazz" camp.

And that's all true enough, I suppose.
But I've been into the "alternative jazz" for a little while now, and there's a lot of stuff considered jazz, from Liquid Tension Experiment to Buckethead to that "trance blues" guitar dude whose name I can't remember.

Personally, for me, it's really easy for me to hear the roots and connect it with earlier music. Like I'll be listening to the radio, hear something and say, "Hey that sounds exactly like how X does it". But that might just be me.

Aahh thats cool.

You can totally say there are jazz influences in a lot of modern music, direct decendants, maybe not.. But influences - Defently. I mean, everytime someone uses a M7 chord, Jazz. Everytime someone uses a Mode in a solo, Jazz.

While I personally wouldn't call the acts you mentioned Jazz, they have a pretty big Jazz influence in them

Well, I guess it really doesn't matter what you call it, it's still the same music.

Actually, the classical musicians used M7 chords, and they used modes in their improv, from what I understand. (Yes, there is classical improv, and it's awesome.)

Hah, wow.

Classical improv, I always thought that was an oxymoron =P

Bach actually improved his Fugue in D minor.

Then he wrote it down.

Punk rock and hardcore punk is my forte, that being said I do enjoy hip hop when the lyrics amount to more than 'bitchez and gunz', some country-esque and folk groups, (Lucero, Tim Barry, Chuck Ragan), occasionally electro with high levels of intoxication. My least favourite genre would have to be just generic boring rock, ie; Nickleback.. Sorry.

Ok. I'll explain the two in my own words.

Black Metal (2nd Wave) - A genre of Extreme Metal whose signature sound mostly consists of highly-distorted, tremolo-picked guitar riffs with a far higher range of pitch than Thrash Metal. Vocals consist mostly of hoarse screams, warcrys, and demonic-sounding chants. Drums can range anywhere from 4/4 rock beats (Det Som Engang Var) to 180bpm Thrash-style blast beats (Sons of Northern Darkness) Lyrics are mostly centered around Satanism, War, and Norse/Pagan culture.

Bands - Burzum, Immortal, Mayhem, etc.

Depressive Black Metal - A sub-genre of 2nd-Wave Black Metal whose signature sound mostly consists of slower-tempo (~80bpm), highly-distorted sustains and power chords. Note that the band Leviathan is one of the few exceptions to the slower-tempo rule, as his music I view as more of a fusion between Black and Depressive Black. Vocals mostly consist of long, drawn-out, and high-pitched shrieks. Drums usually consist of basic doom beats (ride+bass, ride, ride+snare, ride) or Burzum-style 4/4 rock beats at a steady tempo with the rest of the music. Lyrics center around Nihilism, Despair, Misanthropy, and Insanity.

Bands - Xasthur, Leviathan, Silencer, etc.

A plague unto your house for not listing metal. Scar Symmetry, Killswitch Engage, and DragonForce ftw.
