Grunge is what happened dude. The 80's attitude used to be if you don't like me FUCK OFF. During the grunge days it was like, I got a billion dollars but I wanna kill myself T_T. Thus beginning the "emo" age, and it's all down hill from there. These days I listen to bands like Metallica, Black Sabbath, and Slipknot.

You know people have different tastes in music, right? I will admit that I would rather listen to Iron Maiden than *ugh* Cannibal Corpse any day but some people really like that band. I think that they feel like my ears are vomiting while someone else may think that they're the greatest band in existence. Some people listen to gangsta rap and I don't. Some of today's music really isn't that bad. Of course, Dio is still the greatest singer of all time and no one will ever come close.

Personally, I say fuck the 80s and all the elitist, arrogant bastards from it who keep trying to tell me what I should and shouldn't like.

And choosing a bullet for my valentine song as crux for your argument doesn't really help it's validity in my eyes.

Why don't you come back when you've listened to more then two songs and have actually become more aware of the current metal scene? What you've got there wouldn't even satisfy the rigor requirements of a 6th grade report.

I think 80's metal was more annoying... it wasn't really metal... nothing too hard core, not much screaming, etc. Old punk was bad too... most of it all sounded the same... and British punk... my god, the entire genre sounded exactly the same... If you don't like it, then don't listen to it... simple as that...

So you pick the best 80's band and compare it to some of the worst modern ones, how exactly does that make sense?
There are very good modern metal bands like Children of Bodom, Mastodon, Genghis Tron or Dimmu Borgir, why don't you compare with those?

You just need to know where to look. The following are all post-2000s metal songs that are good, good, good.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6B105P7buQo - Iron Maiden, The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDTq9Ow7Fjw - Korpiklaani, Metsämies

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvzMkY8Zxng - Nightwish, Dark Chest of Wonders

Well to start with you listed 3 bands from the 80's belonging to the speed metal, thrash metal and NWOBHM genres, true visionaries of the genres they belong to I might add, and compared them to two dime a dozen deathcore bands with no similarities to the two groups aside from belonging to the massive umbrella term "metal".

Your argument is just wrong because you're effecting comparing an apple to an orange. If you looked at modern proponents of the genres you were looking at then you might be less disappointed in your findings to generalise the ENTIRE music scene of an era because 3 bands are unpalatable to you. In other words stop being a troll and open your mind a bit

That's a very quick way to get into probation or suspension.

I've been meaning to ask someone this: what exactly do you like about Cannibal Corpse? I can't find one redeeming quality. The vocals are gurgled and growled, the tempo is about 80000bpm, the guitars are overdistorted, the lyrics are disgusting, the bass can't be heard and harmony is non-existent.

I think it's fun how OP talks about 80's metal 'sif it's dead.
Agreed, 80s metal is very much still around. Listen to A Matter of Life and Death, United Abominations or Death Magnetic. Three brilliant albums by three of the best bands from the 80s yet released in the past few years.

I've been reading this for awhile trying to think of the right thing to say.

And I think I have it.

The thing about music today is, there is a lot more of it. Back in the 80s it was a lot harder to get your music out there, nowadays, anyone with some mates, a room and a few hundred dollars for protools and a mic can make an entire album of semi decent quality. This means you are going to have to get past a lot more crap before you are getting to the good stuff. You can't say "Metal is crap nowadays" just like you can't say "Jazz is crap nowadays" there is just more of it.

Also because Metal was fairly new in the 80s (10 or so years, half of that as a popular genre) there wasn't a lot to do. Now that Metal has established itself people are trying to find new things, new ways of approaching it. When people grow up with, or are fans of, the old ways, they don't want to see a bunch of kids come along and change the way something they love so much sounds/feels!

To be honest with you, I think the exact oposite. I think metal from the good ol' days (AC/DC, Led Zep and off course the allmighty Allman Brothers Band) is as bland as can be. Modern metal bands like Lamb of God, Devildriver or even modern prog bands like Dream Theater or Symphony X are very welcome additions to a new era of music. Off course, without the older bands, this kind of music would've never sounded anything like it does now, but keep in mind that what you hear now is much more defined and perfectionized (terrible grammar).

So, conclution: Modern Metal > Old Metal

What happened to metal? Metal diversified that's what!
I see myself as a metal fan, but I don't like (or expect to like) every metal song (or genre) ever.
The existance of the emo doesn't help though :)

I distinctly remember asking you to explain WHY you liked such a cacophonic thing.
And I listen to dark, moody music. There's a difference between dark and moody (say, Fleurs Du Mal, Over The Hills And Far Away, Crows Bring The Spring) and "ARRGHGHAGGHGGRRRRRRRGRGRGR"

i thought "i like it get over it" was a decent answer but watever. ok. the singings nothin to cheer for i agree, but some people like it. Personally i listen to it for the insane guitar that u dont get from many other softer metal bands. My friend likes the unique drums. so again, I like it, get over it.

Personally I don't like uplifting metal. That includes a lot of progressive, power, symphonic, and some early thrash. I also don't like bands who just copy Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Metallica.
Anyway, in defense of my generation:

Same here. I like metal, but I don't consider myself an expert, nor do I expect to fully enjoy every song (I don't like Death metal, for instance) but I do so often come accross something that I love to death (I started listening to Hammerfall due to this thread for instance. AMAZING STUFF!).

Same with Classical. I lke Classical music, but not Beethoven, and people think "but isn't he like the God of Class. Music?".
