Today i had the "opportunity" to listen to modern day music (on reflection, i was forced into it) and what was experienced has forever scarred me and has deepened my hate for greed.
What i'm talking about is todays music, sure you could call some of the new artists talented, but only if you like eating through a tube.

What happened to the 80s, sure people wanted to be in bands to haul in some cash but atleast they faded away quickly because heroin was still obtainable which kept out all of the people who had no real friends/fans. What happened to buckling down, writing music, trying to make what you're playing sound good? Where the fuck did all the talent go? Im starting to blame pro tools and girls who like the emo/hardcore image and pretty boys who cant take a punch to the face.
I, for some reason beyond understanding, was not raised in the 80s but after the age of 7 i refused to listen to music that was brought to me by the tv or the radio, only I would choose what id even listen to and i then raised myself in the 80s by listening to nothing but the golden age of metal

Prime example, 80s metal.

After these last two videos, you may be asking "Why must you make me listen to this? What the fuck have I ever done to you?" Well please endure this last video to kick you swiftly in the nuts and say, "there's more, ****."

By now you've probably opened up itunes and are now in the secure domains of your own music.

My question to you is, have you felt metal has become boring now? Does there need to be another jimmi hendrix to redefine the fine arts of music? Another metallica to start up a genre? Another Megadeth to refine it?
Did you possibly watch Metal on [V] on foxtel in Australia it was full of the same stuff, first thought in my head "What the shit, this aint metal, its screamo"

Metal, like /b/, was never good.

But I gotta say one thing in its defense:
Unlike that shit they play at raves, at least metal's made with real instruments.

If you want good music, listen to stuff that doesn't rely exclusively on "br00tul" solos to keep its fanbase. I recommend electroclash, darkwave, funk, and cabaret.

Nothing to do with "talent" either, all the bands seem more or less equally talented and the whole concept of "talent" in music has been outmoded ever since the birth of punk in the late 70s proved that you didn't need to be a music expert to write great songs that people liked.
This may be difficult for you to grasp, but writing an authentic punk song that's actually catchy is much harder than just playing pentatonic or diminished scales really fast, like every metal band since the birth of the genre has done.

Punk was never about technique, and "technique" is not the same thing as "talent", nor is it an adequate substitute for actual songwriting ability.

TC needs to listen to more Gojira, Opeth, Between the Buried and Me and Mastodon.
Dude, Opeth sucks even worse than anything he posted. That's why nobody but the metalheads actually listens to them.
So uh, what was the point in you posting if you don't like/know much about metal?

In my opinion, there are very few bands that are metal, no matter what time-era they're from. Bands like Dillinger are what everyone who is in metal is trying to achieve and failing. Complete individuality, Unpredictability and raw, meaningful music.

You're saying that 80's metal is good, and modern metal is bad. But in my opinion the reason why you hate modern metal means you should hate 80's metal as well. If you understand what I'm trying to get at..

Most people would agree with me when I say most 80's metal bands were more conscious about their looks than modern day metal. Again look at Dillinger, they look like typical 30 year old guys. All those bands which you linked us to look so generic, they did exactly what bands like BMTH and AFI do now.

Sorry if all this sounds like I'm trying to start an argument, but so many people have this opinion but don't seem to notice these bands are the same as each other, the only difference is the sound they have.

So, lemme get this straight--you don't think it's possible to know about metal without liking metal?

Wow. You're kind of an idiot, aren't you?

I'll confess--I used to like metal. But just like rap, I stopped liking it when I realized it was all the same.

You know what loud bands are awesome? Primus. System of a Down. Type O Negative, if I'm feeling down. For some reason I never figured out, I also like Arch Enemy. But none of these really rely on fret-wanking, and as such they don't really "count", do they?
So then why did your opinion of metal come down to ""br00tul" solos"? That's why I assumed you knew bugger all, if you think that's all metal is.

Modern day metal is fine, actually. In fact, better. There's more of it to go around, more to choose, more to enjoy. I'm in no way a metalhead, but a few metal bands are worth my time. I tend to stay in the avant-garde and experimental - I love the drone of Sunn O))), the intense blasts of noise from Mirrorthrone and Xasthur, the whine of Fear Before. When I listen to metal, it's mostly metalcore, to be honest. But music and metal haven't declined; you just have to know where to look.

Metals too varied to get boring. If you allow the mainstream to feed you the modern shit like BMTH then theres no wonder you are bored with metal.

Hangar 18. Brilliant song.
Metallica is an awesome band for giving us such incredible music!

Before I get flamed for that, remember that the guy who started Megadeth was in Metallica for a while, before falling out with some of the band members and forming Megadeth in response. Without that fallout MegaDeth would possibly never have happened.

Metal these days is a little annoying. Every band seems to have the same generic Metal sound without bringing something new to the table. They all have the same inspirations, yet seem to forget that music comes from the heart rather than a formula you follow. Sure it sounds heavy and shouty, but there are few recent bands that really define themselves and the genre. I love recent bands like Mastodon and UnEarth, however I do feel we need a brand new Pantera at some point to really kickstart Metal once more, rather than having a generation of emo kids.

*Sorry, my post is a bit of a ramble.

Have you listened to In Flames or Killswitch Engage? I don't know why but I get the impression you'd like them.

I loved Killswitch when Jesse was the singer, but I haven't really listened to them since he left. Inflames I haven't heard much of, but they are a great band. Thanks for the links.

Music, just like everything else, has gone down in to the pit of crap and unoriginality. I've heard all of the bands like Opeth and Lamb of God, then heard all the crap on MTV, I can't even call it music!

Yeah we need new legendary song writers and super talented musicians to mop the floor of all this junk. I can't imagine a second coming of Jimi Hendrix but I hope that one day it will happen.

Just so you know, the escapist is a bad place for this topic since the most popular music hear is the new metal.

Metal is still pretty good, the 80s just had a large amount of very good bands, and I myself listen to alot of the older bands... Dio, NIN, Iron Maiden, Manowar AC/DC and the likes

Its not all bad... Iron Maiden's new album is supposed to be released next year, and Jorn Lande has rejoined Masterplan.

I've never really liked metal, but I can see your point. The further back in time you go, the more I seem to like metal. Stuff nowadays gives me a headache.

It sounds to me that many of you need to be introduced, or further immerse yourselves in the proggy scene.

after reading all these posts about metal and who suck/who rules you guys forget one thing ..everyone has different opinions for the matter .. ok dude that posted this thread .. u did pick out some pretty horrible bands that i wouldnt listen to, and if u dont like the shit ur listening to CHANGE the CD OR CHANNEL .. but i dont blame you for it tho cause thats what the mainstream is playing like other people have said .. Also 90% of "metal" (hell i wouldnt even call it metal but whatever..if your whining about something its not metal) is all throw a way metal which means after it gets popular and it dies out its never gunna come back.. now you listen to pantera's "walk" for example that shit is still fucking amazing as the first day it came out (in my opinion)

Keep in mind also theres TONS upon TONS of different genres of metal now a days Trash, melodic ect so you gotta factor in that too.. where as back in the day there was just heavy metal

expand your library InsertWittyName theres still good metal out there you just gotta dig through the crap to get to it.
