As far as I'm concerned it's the most retarded thing on the internet. It started out as people watching it because it wasn't "cool" to watch it. Then it exploded and everybody is into it.

And to think... 2 months ago people were net bashing on hipsters constantly. Now everyone is a hipster.

I can't wait for the 15 minutes to be over... This needs to die quickly...
Surely the point of being a hipster is that you can say you like something in order to make people like you? That can't really be said of My Little Pony, as I'd bet that few people would be willing to admit liking it in day-to-day life, certainly not to people who aren't good friends (if you would admit it in public, then more power to you btw).

It's a cyclical loop. A positive feedback mechanism. All it requires is some form of stimuli.

Example:

Douche 1: Look at all these sheep. Everyone looks the same. I'm going to grow mutton chops. Then maybe somebody will finally love me.
*time passes*
Douche 2: Wow! That guy is so lame! I wish I could be like that!
Douche 3: Yeah! I lack the confidence in myself so I'm going to let my appearance dictate my personality!
*time passes*
Douche 4: What-the fuck-ever man. I'm gonna go play croquet in Victorian era formal wear.
*time passes*
Douche 5: *moist*

Whenever a douchebag is seen carrying a 1950's "house call" style doctors bag? Hipster.

Whenever someone is wearing a cummerbund with a t-shirt? Hipster.

Whenever someone takes out a brand new pocket watch that is in no way an heirloom? Hipster.

Whenever a human corpse is desecrated? Robot house.

Anyway... I don't care for My Little Pony.

I'm personally wondering how popular this show would be if 4chan didn't jump all over it and bring attention to it.

I'm just really confused how I didn't find out about the Penguins of Madagascar until almost a whole year after it debuted. I loved the penguins in the movies(and penguins in general, among other awesome animals) and yet I had no idea the show existed. I heard of this show less than two months after it debuted, and I had zero previous interest in ponies, magical or otherwise.
I can only assume that it blew out of proportion due to the violent reactions of people who found the concept of it being good ludicrous.

I love irony.

When I first heard of it I thought surely 4chan is just being ironic. Then I figured since the internet follows 4chan, people would watch it, realize "oh i has been troled" and move on. Then all of a sudden everyone had pony avatars on this forum. "wat"

Is this all because of that My Little Pony Mass Effect trailer..?
No, it started long before that and that popularity caused the Mass Effect trailer, along with the Starcraft 2 Trailer, and the Skyrim Trailer...

Considering that Lauren Faust was essentially working with "Make a show about ponies so we can sell more pony toys to little girls" it's a pretty good show.
Exactly this. This is the reason people can watch FiM and enjoy it; because the creators of the show cared. There's genuine enthusiasm to be found at every level of production, from the voice acting to the animation to the god-damn outstanding musical numbers. The show has such a wide audience precisely because of what it could have been. Indeed, what it should have been. Friendship is Magic should have been nothing more than a soulless brand exercise, with only the barest hint of thought to keep even a modicum of coherency. It should have catered to the lowest of stereotyped common denominators. It should have been a worthless and pathetic excuse of a glorified advertisement.

It should have, but it isn't.

The creators of FiM literally took nothing and made it into something, all because they bothered to care about what they were doing. Friendship is Magic is proof positive that there are no good ideas, and only the execution of an idea will determine whether something holds value. Even if you can say you objectively hate My Little Ponies: Friendship is Magic, you cannot deny that these people made it about as good as they possibly could have, given the criteria.

You seem to have jumped from cliched hipster wear to... watching ponies on the internet.

Suuuure.

But basically what you're saying is if you ever join on something that's popular, no matter your reason, you're a hipster. Which means you must only approve of liking stuff that isn't popular? Wow, that full-circle hipster is insidious. Listen, I watched the first episode while randomly browsing Knowyourmeme, having got there from TVtropes on an unrelated topic. I had absolutely no input from other people when I started watching that episode, but I wouldn't have even heard of if it hadn't become popular, and I'm thankful for that. So if you want to be miserable refusing to partake in anything that other people like, be my guest.

Also, complaining about hipster-style formal Victorian wear is a bit rich when your avatar is a shark wearing formal victorian wear.

Meh, I didn't really like Foster's Home / Teenage Robot that much so maybe that's why I don't really get this? I did love me some Dexter's lab though.

Huh. I dismissed this because well... I'm a guy, and I can imagine that if I were to watch it, all of my friends, man and women, would think I was a pansy. I have not seen it, but after hearing so much about it, maybe I too, will find a dark room and a corner to sit in, and plug in my earphones, just to attempt to see what the hype is about. Then I'll get embarrassed and stop. Damn my low self esteem.
Or who knows, I might see an episode. After reading one of the links above, IT REFERENCES DR. WHO! The doctor! I mean, that really does show it can at least try cater to an older crowd.
A little bit.
Not that I'll try to watch it or anything.

Quick comment. It has taken me like 20 minutes to decide whether or not to post this little thing in case if any of my friends found out. Guys have to keep up appearences too.

I don't get people who list "oh it makes references to xyz adultier thing" as a reason for watching something. I mean, I don't see Skipper riding a missile while yelling and think, "oh hey, Dr. Strangelove reference, this is much more exciting and watchable now!". Maybe that's just me, though. I mean, I like nods and references, but they generally wouldn't tip the scale of something from unwatchable to watchable.

I was recently at universal orlando ( I do not recommend ) and I was trying to find something to do, to justify the $80 ticket price after riding the three coasters 20 times total, so I went to some Poseiden's temple "play". It was a horribly written script which just through references in randomly.

Voice: "I'm your master!"
Tour guide: "Yoda?"

Tour guide: "I see dead people!"

etc. It had references but that didn't save it.

Ooooh, I'm so in! The show is good, I may be the first guy to ever admit that I converted my little sister into watching this show and not the other way around. The hilarious thing is, she tried to pretend not to like it and later on I walked in on her watching it with every episode up on a playlist. I laughed a bit and told her it was perfectly OK for a 9 year old girl to watch it if her 21 year old brother did too. She still won't tell anyone else in the family she watches it but always reminds me when a new episode is out. :D

Didn't you hear? Buying things which you think look nice makes you a hipster.

True story:

  • Encountered the generation 4 series 3 weeks ago from a previous thread here on the Escapist Magazine forums.

Skeptically watched the first two episodes of it.

Hook, line, and sinker. Marathoned the rest.

Underwent a week-long existential crisis about how a brand I spent 25 years thinking was ridiculously pablum girls programming could possibly be this awesome. (Note: my opinion about pre-generation 4 MLP remains the same.)

Went full on brony. Ponychan and Equestria Daily are now regular Internet haunts of mine. My mind is full of pony and I love it.

    I'm a 34-year-old heterosexual male.
So, yeah, I think My Little Pony is good now. Funny old world, isn't it?

Hedonist = Old timey name for hipster.

I cannot wait until the first person on The Escapist to like Problem Solvers makes a thread here. His mind will be blown into billions of fragments of fuck.

Hmm, I think this has just come down to a case of, "they don't like what I like". I don't think I'll understand and I can't force myself to like it, so I take my leave. Peace.
