Could we at least stop with the asinine 'it's so cute and other animals aren't' defense? It makes you sound as stupid as the original poster.
Why don't we throw a fit when cows and the like are killed for food vs. a kitten burned alive? Basically because of what's already been said; livestock is raised/killed to become a source of food, and is knocked unconscious or given anesthetic before the final blow. This cat, someone's companion (what it was bred for), was tossed in an oven and baked to death FOR FUN. That's it. No comparison.
Most people feel no compassion for the livestock because it's the norm in Western cultures to see it bred to die and be eaten. If cats produced more meat than cattle, pigs and chickens, and were easily raised from birth to adulthood in a much shorter time, who knows, we'd probably be eating some form of specially bred fat cat.
Don't get me wrong, I do indulge in veggie food for health reasons, but I couldn't give two shits if an animal is killed for food, and don't give much of a shit about the cat story either beyond the sheer surprise of the girl's lack of remorse of it when I first read it.
Coming on here and being a holier-than-thou prick does nothing to help your crap argument, OP. Just because the supplies to be a vegetarian are available, doesn't mean everyone should or has to be.
