Anybody who says obesity is an illness is full of grade A bullshit. While some people do have slower metabolism then others, if people really have a problem with being fat then they should eat right and exercise in the first place. People need to start taking responsibility for their own actions. Don;t sue McDonald's cause your fat, sue yourself, for eating to many big freakin macs.

I have a wonderful diet, I have a very active life. I'm doing an hour to almost up to three hours of aerobics and calisthenics a day. I weight train 3 times a week.
And yet I can't lose a single pound.
My friend, eats four times as much as I could eat in a day. He sleeps until noon, and never exercises except for once a month at his reserves drill.
yet he weighs 150 pounds.

There is far more to weight problems then "exercising, laziness, and diet.".
but it is possible you could be gaining muscle at the same time, which would make it appear that you aren't making progress when in fact such would be great progress. I am not saying that is the case, just that it is a possibility.
I say it is some of both, because in many cases, the person in question is doing it to themself, but at the same time, you have people in Necroswanson's position, who are doing everything right, and still not seeing results.

Obesity is defined as an illness by the medical community. And your metabolism is not slower if you're more likely to put on weight, it's actually more efficient. I refer you to my two previous posts on the subject. My posts are number 23 and 60

"Did you ever know that you're my heeerrroooo?"

Metabolism is not how quickly you burn calories, it's how quickly (and efficiently) energy is converted from form to form. So, a fast metabolism (like that of an overweight person) can convert energy from food without much being lost. Similarly, it can convert energy from fat without much being lost. The conversion happens more quickly, but if you don't burn it all back up, it goes back into being fat again.

I do like how we're arguing whether it's an illness when the scientific community has already classified it as such. People with awesome degrees in biology, physiology, and even (gasp) medicine have already come down on the side of "it's something wrong, and it's maladaptive, thus it's a disease."

Oh, I think pointing out that you're too immature and/or too lacking in self-control to have a calm, rational discussion is enough for one thread.
actually no .. everyone does things their own way .. i didn't call you a poo poo face or a noob or any of that shit .. the reason i came off so strong is because i feel so strongly about it .. also lets get back to the argument of whether being fat is an illness .. stay on topic

there are such things as eating disorders that can LEAD to obesity but obesity itself isn't a disease .... the eating disorder is a mental thing and can be cured ... there are so many ways to get to it ... and mostly it's mental disorders like depression ect that lead to it .. but obesity itself isn't an illness

And I'll stick to the fact that it's a disease. I'll even pull out my textbooks and quote them if need be.

Obesity is classified as a disease by the medical community. Are you saying you know more than doctors who have studied at uni for at least 6-7 years then gone on and researched obesity?

doctors words change like the tides ... and they're constantly thinking of new ways to make people feel better about themselves ... so saying obesity is a disease sounds better than "oh shit i eat 50 twinkies every day and i can't be bothered to exercise" .. i don't trust a word the docs say .. my uncle was got lung cancer a year ago and they told him he was going to definately die in 4 months .. here 3 years later he's still around

Okay--anemia is considered an illness, and it is sometimes the result of not eating enough cheeseburgers. Obesity is sometimes the result of eating too many cheesburgers. Anemia is too little iron in your blood. Obesity is too much fat in your fat cells.

So...either you've got to say anemia isn't an illness, that obesity is, or explain what's wrong with what I said.

people have different ways of getting their point across ... there's no correct way to speak .. yes but obesity is not the disease .. it's what an eating disorder can lead to ... too much fat in your cells is just extra stuff .. it's not eating away at you, it's not a virus and it can be reduced at any time

'Overeating is not the sole cause of obesity, but it is part of the weight maintenance equation' - from Brannon, L & Feist, J, 2007. 'Health Psychology - an Introduction to Behaviour and Health 6th Edition' Thomson, USA.

-The World Health Organisation also acknowledges that obesity is a world-wide problem which also affects many developing countries. - From Kumar, P & Clark, M, 2005. 'Clinical Medicine - 6th Edition', Elseiver Saunders, USA.

I would pull out more textbooks and quote from them, but I have to go to work now. Also trust your doctor, they know a lot more than you do. Please.

EDIT: I'll pull out more info when I get home tonight.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, and I have said it in -this- thread.

I view Obesity in the way the medical world views Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, otherwise known as AIDS. AIDS is a state in which the body can no longer properly defend itself from viruses and the like because of a disease known as the Human Immunodeficiency virus. AIDS is a condition, HIV is a disease.

Obesity is a condition which can be caused by a disease. Unlike AIDS, however, Obesity is a condition that can also be achieved through mundane means. It is my personal belief that MOST people who are obese are that way because they made bad life choices, not because of a disease.

Now, please, keep things civil in here and stop swearing at one another. This is how you get banned and have topics locked.

Hah, wow.

What thread have you been reading?

It's mostly been a battle of big words in large paragraphs with people hair-splitting the definitions of pertinent ideas.

Your avatar suits you nicely. Like I can see it speaking each word of your post.
