While I appreciate the attempt at fixing my wording, I still think homophobic stands in correct usage. It doesn't necessarily indicate a fear. The contempt [http://www.answers.com/homophobic].
'Homophobic' as defined by the website you provided, is a made up, albeit popular, buzz word. REAL 'phobias' are about fear: Phobia - An unreasonable sort of fear that can cause avoidance and panic.

Probably "gay" or "fag" just because they're completely invalid insults; one's sex and gender identities have nothing to do with their gaming ability.

I have heard a wide variety of attacks from racism to homophobia to anti-semitism. It's hard to say....But all insults are caused by poor sportsmanship, I can agree with that..
Not true. I constantly insult my friends and a lot of people I know through friends because that's just how we are. We enjoy insulting each other and devolving into sarcasm and attempts to one up each other. And team killing. It's not that insulting perse is a bad thing, just most people that do it are trying to appear stronger and more manly in... well, in a video game.
But the qualifier there is that you do that to your FRIENDS, which is fine. I do that to mine to! But not to complete strangers I meet while playing a game on the internet. That's stupid.

And while the denotative meaning may be strict "fear" the connotaive meaning, one that generally holds more public accept, does include a level of contempt. I tend to stray from "strict dictionary" definitions because in true real life application, they don't hold up to emotionally backed and media-guided sentiments.

I've made some of my best friends by insulting them. Though yes, that being said, one should pay attention to the people they're playing with. And certainly, such jests should be done light heartedly compared to how they're usually done in some sort of silly attempt at proving dominance.

While I understand this trend-- to insult friends in a lighthearted nature, something I even used to do, I find its better all around if negativity is reduced in friendships.. even when in jest.

Of course I insulted my guy friends all through highschool, and they did the same, it just seems to be male nature at least.

What we see online is an exaggeration of this trend because of, in my opinion, the anonymity awarded by gaming.

It's a personal thing, and probably comes from our collective love of black comedy and sarcasm. But the last line is probably what it comes down to, anonymity. It lets people let loose the less desireable aspects of themselves without being noticed for it. Look at 4chan's /b/, or any of its boards. Anonymity allows for jack assery.

I definitely think that the term "noob" is thrown around a bit too much.
Especially on rainbow six Vegas 2 wherein people call you an "Extracta-noob" for reaching the objective and if you do reach said objective the chat will erupt(but only on one team) of "Extracta-noob" and people will start to shout at you about how killing one guy(21xp) is better than extracting(154xp for each member of your team).

But really all of those insults are pretty common especially the Anti-Homo slurs.

Fair enough. While I disagree and stand by my calling it a 'buzzword', I can understand where you're coming from.

Typical British insult i usually throw at the yanks.
Generally my anti American insult goes like this:
"Come back when you can speak English!"

For idiots:
"you see them, yes them, they're the enemy, point at them a press fire. You can manage that can't you?"
For real idiots:
"Just stand in the corner over there, we'll do better without you,"
For tk'ing idiots:
(Shoot them dead) "Sorry, but we need your ammunition,"

Fag is the most over used, noob generally signifies that you've done something wrong. even if that wrong is grabbed the ammo your awesome l33t teammate wanted. Fag is a cigareete, why waste all that effort calling someone cigarette?

I generally use "tosser" "fucking wanker" and "whore". no I am not British but they just role off the tongue so well. I generally stick to insulting individuals based on their behavior in the game. Like if somebody is runnig around and keeps shooting teamates(friendly fire off, cause if it was on he/she would have a bullet in his brain)I will generally respond by telling him to hand in his gun and leave the server or to go sit in a corner until we come to get him.

i have noticed that in voice comms on CoD4, if an american is anoying you, shouting random stuff down the mic or the dreaded having a damn phone call while there mic is on making it imposible for you to co-ordinate with you team unless you mute them.then the insult most used is

"are you a freaking 12 year old"

and the response is either. (noob, gay, fag, douch, or my fav.- no but you are.)

The thing is, it's not just Americans. I was on a server once where there were a bunch of French people. They decided to gang up on me since I wasn't French, so they all joined the same team. It was 4v1. However, they happened to be terrible at the game, so I completely demolished them. They called me gay, a fag, an asshole, everything. Then they called me a noob. Now this made no sense. If someone's owning your collective asses, you do not claim they are new to the game and have no skill, which is, as far as I know, what noob means. I then proceeded to say "If I'm a noob, how come I can do this?", owned them again, and left the server. A few minutes later, my firewall blocked a poorly executed intrusion attempt. From the same IP as one of the players. They had just been owned yet again.

I'd have to say, I can't say which is more overused, but fag/gay, noob, lag, haxxor, are all overused. I think I've only said lag in one case, and that wasn't after someone killed me, it was when I join a server, go at about 2 fps, and say "sorry guys, lag, bye." In fact, insults are stupid almost all the time, and are all overused. The only insults I'm okay with are when you're obviously being playful, like "this round, I'm going to kick your sorry noob ass" at the beginning of a match. When someone kills me, I generally say nice shot, and attempt to get back at them through in-game violence, not words. Remember kids: When you get upset, kill the person, don't yell at them. It's like the opposite of the real world.
