Just wondering. What exactly defines 'being an artist'?
If you have a functioning limb or two with which you can pick up a pencil, you can draw.

Being An Artist: where you can draw/paint something that actually looks like the intended object/person.

Well thats my view anyways xD Since I don't consider myself an artist.

I do write sometimes though >_> I just need a confidence booster :D

I attempt music. I like drawing.

Note that I enjoy both these things, but suck hard at them.

Meh art's definitely in the eye of the beholder. Whenever I'm asked what I think art is, I just say that it's some form of creative output that's made for the enjoyment of other people. I feel that is a nice, very evasive way of putting it, and keeps my own personal opinions about what gets considered to be "art" out of it.

And I make music btw. Well...try to make music

Well I think to define an artist, one would need to define art.
But art is a pretty subjective term, and often thrown around very frivolously these days.

One might consider a rusty nail through a Coke can a symbol of anti-capitalism, or even an artistic stand against processed foods in general, while another might just see a nail through a can.
Who is right and who is wrong?

Both, I'd say. Art is different things to different people, and we're not always going to agree. I wouldn't call someone who draws hentai or other cartoon porn an 'artist', no matter how well they can draw. But I would call a barely legible drawing of a road drawn by a man with cerebral palsy to represent the hard road he walks with his terrible illness art.

Some might agree with me, others might not.
I'd say it comes down to intent/message, as well as clarity in said message/intent.
But that's me.

How about stylization, then? Some artists' styles don't look anything like what they depict.
Is it all based on one's own notion of being an artist?
Or do others need to recognise one's 'talent' first.

Dabble's a funny word...
I like to doodle a lot, but when it comes to big, impressive pieces, any skill I had seems to get flushed straight down the toilet.

You mean like abstract? yeah that counts too xD

Like I said dude, I only say that 'cause I can't draw to save my life

I'm told I'm brilliant at drawing and writing, but I don't like it.
And I suppose an artist is someone who creates art.

I can't be bothered to define art......sorry

If you can think outside the box and let your imagination run free on the paper.
Pouring your heart and soul onto the paper/canvas/whatever.
showing people what you stand for in an artistic way.

There's a building site in the middle of my town, they knocked it all down to build a shopping centre, but it went bankrupt. People have been writing "give it back to the people" on the borders around it. I class that as art.

Would you not consider photography an art? Not that I do it, but I've seen some really excellent photographs that I would call artistic.

I sometimes make attempts at drawing, writing, and music-type stuff.
I'm not sure if any of them count, though. I'm pretty abysmal at all of them.
But hey, at least I try, or whatever.

EDIT: I know, I know. That's not really what the topic is about.
But it's what the poll is about. And to be honest, I'm too tired to delve into stuff like "the definition of art" right now.
It'd require some form of eloquence. Something I lack at the best of times.

Aha, but has 'thinking outside the box' really not become a part of the box itself?
I call myself 'an artist and philosopher' but do I need to prove I am--
because any lout can call themselves whatever?
