If I have the option to choose the gender of my character, I usually choose my own gender. I just prefer it, but I wouldn't feel uncomfortable playing as the opposite sex either. In a game where the gender depends on the class (such as Diablo) I will obviously choose whichever class I want to play, irrespective of whether they are male or female.

Depends on the game. MMO's i almost exclusively play as females. cause well they are just better looking models/avatars then their male counter parts most of the time. Also your just a insignificant hero in a world populated by heroes. So better to look good being a hero right? XD

but for single player games, i.e. Mass Effect, i play as a man because of the projection of self. I want to feel like I'm saving the universe.

So not unnatural at all.

Also, free loot from naive teenagers are always welcome. XD

There are a lot of different motives that make you play a character so the questions rather vague. In a game like Bayonetta the only playable character is female so why should it bother me? Games like Street fighter offer unqieu skill sets with different female characters. I think the only time it matters is A; when you are choosing a character strictly so you can stare at thier body, or B: when you do it to roleplay or confuse other characters.

I frequently play a female in games despite being a male.

So long as they aren't scantily clad, they make for more appealing and stylish characters to look at throughout a video game.

If the game has a character builder where I can put something close to myself, I'll play a male to enhance the immersion factor.

Simple philosophy --
If you're gonna have to stare at an ass for a few hours, might as well be a female's

I don't mind it in the slightest, I usually play as a guy on my first playthrough, then go female as my second just to observe the differences in gameplay and dialogue.

That, and it's refreshing to stare at a female arse for a few hours after having the male variant.

I myself always play a female character given the choice, and anyone who have a problem can take their leave from the internet.

And if your friend thinks playing as the opposite sex is wierd, send him a link to this:

I loled. And I have no idea why. XD

OT: I've played female characters before. In videogames it's not such a big deal, because most of the stuff you do has predetermined results. Now, playing a pen and paper female character...I did it once when I was younger just to see what would happen...let's just say that we needed money and the cleric could purify most anything she caught. XD

If I'm going to be staring at a characters ass for prolonged periods of time, it might as well be a nice ass.

I don't see the issue with it, personally. People have tons of different reasons for deciding to play a male or female. Am male myself, most of my characters on WoW are female for a simple reason. Males of 'any' race are built like the Hulk, even when they're, say, a mage or priest. Just seems a bit off to me.
Other than that, character looks is something I pay a lot of attention to. And that doesn't mean paying attention to the more attractive rear end (though it's a plus), but to what kind of personality you could associate with that character, as well as how certain equipment would look. Usually play female in other games for that reason, aswell.
One of the few exceptions being Pokemon Soulsilver... Can't stand looking at the damn hat. ><

I've been playing Left 4 Dead recently and I ALWAYS use Zoey. I dunno why, but when given the option, I almost inevitably choose the female character. Diablo II, Left 4 Dead...I almost wish there were more games (within genres I play) that gave you that option...

I don't mind at all, given it fits the story(or doesn't hurt it). If given the choice, I usually have a few files with different genders and races.

I have no problem with it, in fact I actually quite often play Halo: Reach as a female Spartan at points, including the campaign. I guess I just like to see a prominent female character in the series, you know?

That said, recently someone tried to friend me who I think wanted to put moves on me, which was quite disturbing.

Depends. I'm fine with most male characters as long as they aren't annoying to me, but females is a bit trickier. Characters like Heather Mason don't bother me, character that dress, talk, act, and react like an actual teenage girl would. I am rather bothered playing as characters like this:

I don't think I need to explain why.

my shepard is female because i like the voice actor better than the male equivalent

i generally don't think this is weird, unless you totally commit to the role. under those circumstances, playing a fantasy creature is even weirder

I have Shepards of both genders. It almost seems like you're missing out on parts of the game if you don't play both sexes. But, that's just my stance.
