I myself always play a female character given the choice, and anyone who have a problem can take their leave from the internet.

And if your friend thinks playing as the opposite sex is wierd, send him a link to this:

If given the choice, I'll play a female character, just because I'd rather have a sexy female toon running around on my screen than spend 6 to 8 hours lookin' at the hindquarters of some big hairy bloke.

In Bioware games I usually roll a male character because of the relationships. Sure, you can make hot lesbian sex with Leliana if you like, but it's just not the same. All characters wear a car factory full of metal on them anyway so visually it hardly makes any difference.

In other RPGs like Fallout 3 you can make your character wear something like Sexy Sleepwear and still successfully complete the game so I usually tend to play as a female...in third person...

If you're going to be watching someone's bum for 60 to 80 hours then it might as well be something nice to look at.

well I have to do this ALOT obviously and no I don't find it weird, but I will jump at the chance to play as a chick which works better for role playing

Doesn't bother me at all. Normally I don't go out of my way to play a female character but I am not against it.

No, but I'm not 100% okay with it.
I don't want my mom walking in to see me looking at some girls perfectly formed ass.

That's just awkward.

No it doesn't bother me at all. I'm on my second run through of Fallout:NV and I'm playing as a female to get the experience of both. I tend to do this with most games like this.

I never really liked playing as a female character when I was younger, but I've gradually grown out of it.

If given the choice though, I still pick to play as a boy in Harvest Moon and Pokemon.

That doesn't make Alistair less smexy though. Still need to play Dragon age again to end with him.

As a female, it's pretty hard to play as a female in most games (as most have a male protagonist), though in RPGs I do prefer to play as a female.
My boyfriend always likes to play as a female, he says the armor looks cooler (though I reckon its because he wants to look at boobs).

For me it's simple:
In case i play a silent protagonist/a protagonist where I always give the answers like in Bioware RPGs i prefer to play as a male character (my gender) since i just go with it like: "I'm the protagonist in this game then" so that's my reason why I play male characters in those games. In all kind of other games where I can choose I just go by the looks of the character model.
So all in all i don't mind it.

I guess it just depends on what the player sees in his gaming avatar.

Well, in my circumstances, It's technically weird either way, depending on who you believe.

But I do find it strange that it should bother someone so much.
Personally, it doesn't bother me all that much, but I do prefer female characters if given the chance.

as for this...

Just wondering if anyone else has a problem playing characters of the opposite sex in video games. My friend is always saying how he would never be caught dead playing as a female in video games if given the option to choose, because it feels weird to him. For example, he's never played a Female Shepard in ME because of this reason, so he just watches those parts on Youtube.

Even in some MMOs we play, when he finds out that a guy is playing a female toon, he gets all freaked out by it, and basically calls the guy weird while I shake my head in embarrassment.

I personally think this way of thinking is stupid, but perhaps I'm missing something.

EDIT: Poll got screwed up, sorry.
Spare a thought for the girls that might have the problem your friend does...

There aren't that many female characters around, so if you feel weird about it, you have a hard time playing most games.

I sincerely hope such attitudes as your friend's aren't that common though, because it would mean the rumours of game developers changing games that have female leads to have male leads because they'd sell more would actually be justified.
And that's a little worrying.

To be honest, when I was a pre-adolescent, I preferred to play male characters, be it in Diablo, Quake 2 or pretty much anything else aside from Street Fighter.

It may or may not be related that sometime after growing up and getting laid this didn't bother me any more, but I should state for the record that games that never gave you the choice, like Tomb Raider, didn't feel unnatural either.

My pen-and-paper D&D characters are, to memory, mostly male, but my most recent one was female.

I find it easier to "fall into" the role of the hero if the hero is something or someone I feel familiar with, thats why I prefer to play as my own sex. but I do see the convinience of playing something you're attracted to.

I usually play as male characters as I find it easier to connect with them. In MMORPGs, the character I'm playing is technically a version of "me" being shown to the world and I find it easier to associate a male avatar with myself in the online world. I have tried playing a girl and I will admit that they can be far prettier to look at, but I had a very hard time associating her with me, so she's now sitting, unplayed at level 20, poor thing. It's probably similar to the reason that I generally play very humanoid characters and don't like playing Orcs, Goblins, Tauren etc...

In halo reach for the purpose of sprinting it can be an advantage to hear if someones trying to assassinate you because as a girl you breathe differently. For RPGs I never play as a female because any strength stat is usually higher with men and thats normally what I go for
