If given the choice I play like a male, to be more immersed I guess. However in roleplaying games like Dragon age, KOTOR and Fable, I always first play as a good guy(where I play as "me") and on my second playthrough I play as an evil girl.

I'm a woman, but I rp online as a man all the time; it's never felt weird. (And I've had other rpers say I'm a very convincing man, too--I wonder what that says about me?)

Nope, I do it all the time. It's a habit that stuck ever since I played the first Tomb Raider back in the days, I guess.

I think that in games like Mass Effect, where Gender can play into things, it's no big deal to try it, like as an alternative. Similarly, in games where you pick different characters (like fighting games), it also doesn't matter, since every character has different stats. But in an MMO, or in games where gender makes no difference, I honestly don't get why anyone would pick the opposite.

No it doesn't bother me at all to play as a female character, sometimes the opposite sex gets different sometimes better opportunities than a male character for example in Fallout New Vegas if you go to Cottonwood Cove and kill everybody there as a female character (The old fashioned way) you will be given an extra 100 xp on top of the 1,000 you get from completing the quest Eye for an Eye.

Depends entirely on how heavily gender's going to factor in to the game at hand. I had no problem playing either the Sorceress or Amazon in Diablo 2 because their gender just wasn't that big a deal- I could still smack the shit out of stuff with staves and light fires everywhere.

You start having me do whatever the hell females do, it's... gonna wilt my appeal somewhat.

Well, Imma lady, so I've kinda gotten used to it. At least 90% of playable protagonists in games are dudes, so I'm kind of disillusioned to it. Given the option I usually play a lady, but I can play a guy. It doesn't really bother me and I don't know why it should.

Sounds a lot like me only in the reverse direction, I'm a man I sometimes play online as a woman (Not in a creepy way or anything) and people say I make a very convincing woman.

I haven't identified my character as representing my gender or sexuality ever. Of course, my first serious game was Super Metroid, so maybe this is why. I think some gamers put too much emphasis on things like this that are obviously meaningless. 9 out of my 10 characters on WoW were female, and I never thought twice about it.

In MMOs I tend to play female characters because they look prettier. :D Though in RPGs or any other game that gives you a choice, I'll go male.

A notable exception being Fable II, wherein I picked a female hero but post Citadel, there was no way of telling she was female anymore. She looked like a very, very ugly man. :(
the most ugly guy i know wouldnt even date what....THAT turned into

OT tho....i have to play a dude...(cept my drani shaman in wow thats agirl because the men are hideous) only because if im trying to immerse myself in the character...when there are tits and an ass sticking out....i just cant pretend its me running around...and i mean...hell every ME or Fable or ...shit wow human (and even the hairstyles) i try to make like me as much as i can...idk why...just do. But hey you wanna run around as a chick with 2 2H battle Axes 1 hitting everyone...ill run away no matter your gender lol

Why not.
In 3rd person games if you have to stare at somebody's but the whole game, why not let it be a girl's one.

I have nothing against playing the opposite sex. Sometimes it actually changes what happens in the game, so you get to experience a bit more. That being said, I'm one of those people who "play as themselves", so I usually play as a male character at least on the first run through a game.

I always play a dude.

why? because i can! and with females their bodies always look like a barbie doll. which kind of freaks me out.

I have no problem playing as a female. I generally start with a male when the option exists, but I'll play either. Some times the voice acting's better, sometimes there are different dialogue options, and some times it's just a nicer ass to stare at.

I always flip a coin when ever the decisions come to either play as a male or female character because life is just about luck because you coulda been born a girl, male, or a......never mind (>.>) so it bothers me none

Quite often, given the choice, i'll play the female character. Perhaps it's for the change of pace, or perhaps i'm trying to roleplay the most interesting character by removing it from my own experiences. Honestly, i'd quite like to see some more proper female protagonists, not just the optional RPG ones. I heard a rumour somewhere that ubisoft were considering it for AC3.

IT'S A MAAAAAN-SEGWAY! (I screamed out loud when that baby face appeared)

I think my brain's broken now. Anyway... I always take games as an act of roleplay on my part, but you know what? I can't write female characters. It's just too far out of my tiny realm of experience. I am the classical sort of nerd in that I don't have any female friends, and my sister is... somewhat less than feminine a lot of the time. That leaves me with very little to go on as far as character is concerned. Even in Pokemon, I just couldn't choose a female character when there was an uncomplicated male character standing right there!

I can't claim the "staring at ass all day, it may as well be a nice one" excuse here... that only leads to making my poor female character make very bad decisions.
