I have the innate ability to distinguish between an ingame character and the person playing. If someone, for whatever reason, likes playing as a character of the opposite sex, then by all means go nuts.

Pure insecurity is all that is. Hell, as an RPG game master for various flavors of D20, I've had to create, flesh out and roleplay women plenty of times.
Does that make me a freak? Less of a man maybe?
*shrug*

**edit**
Also, what the hell is your friend on? Commander Shepard is a woman, and I won't hear otherwise (because Jennifer Hale did an absolutely phenomenal job voicing her).

Typically, no matter WHAT game I play, I find a way to Role Play somehow. Even when they try to force me into the games story. So I just go with whatever works for my character. My first Shepard was supposed to be one of irish descent, hence the red hair and beard and green armour, plus a sickening sense of morality. The time I went with a girl I wanted her to be an old saurkraut, hence white hair, old complexion and renegade choices.

For Fable 2, it got screwed up. I was an evil pirate first, but then became a vegetarian necromancer.
In Fable 3, I specifically picked a female character because I had this idea of an evil Femme Fatale shooting lightning and fire, and swinging a hammer ruthlessly. Then I ended up being good for the first time in a fable game, so I made her more of a Eva Peron-type gal.

I honestly don't mind. I can write from the P.O.V of a girl, so I can play as one too. Tis all the same.

I voted "kind of" only because:
I still slightly assume that female toon = female IRL, even though I have seen enough exceptions to the case (honestly, more dudes play fems than fems do) to know better
It bothers me when a dude ACTS like his fem character to a certain degree

I have heard just about every justification for "I play a female toon because?", but I still mostly use male characters.
I only choose female toons as a tribute to someone, or as my caster/ranger/"don't touch me I'm fragile!" class/role.

If it's a roleplaying game, I'll always go for the male character, but otherwise, I really don't mind when the main character is a woman.

is is so supprising that a guy would play as a guy, and a girl would play as a girl?
if so please repeatedly bash your head on the keybord, it might as well be your responce to this.

In playing MMO's, my friend has the philosophy, "If I'm gonna be staring at an ass for hours on end, may as well make it a chick's." I thoroughly agree.

EDIT: What this guy said.
Mr Shrike said:
I'll usually play as a female character, given the option.

On the logic that if I'm going to be staring at a character's behind for 30-1000 hours, it best be lookin' damn good!

I can never get into playing a female character cuz I simply can't relate to one. I feel like I am no longer playing an extension of myself, its just different for the sake of being different.

And if your friend thinks playing as the opposite sex is wierd, send him a link to this:
My E-mail is on my profile page if he wants to send me hate mails.
WTF? XD

OT: I have no problem with others doing it, it's perfectly normal but i just can't do it, not sure why though.

My philosophy for MMORPG's is if I'm going to be staring at the backside of the same character for 1000+ hours, it might as well be one I enjoy looking at =D So I always choose female. Since I'm a guy. Plus guys tend to have boring styles, while I like to make my ladies look pretty. I mean awesome. DON'T JUDGE ME.

No doesn't bother me... it's not as if I am ACTUALLY having a sex-change.
Usually if it's a game where you make characters, like WoW, Oblivion etc, my combat chars are male and my magic chars are female. Mainly coz females look better in robes and the like, where as males look like they got caught trying on mommys clothes.

First playthrough/character is always male, second is always female. Anything after that is fair game.

I usually go female on my first playthrough of anything, and I rarely, rarely go male. It's actually usually for the clothes. Most of the guys (MMO)RPGs have such bland styles if it isn't a JRPG, so I go with girls. They can at least look good while kicking 99 types of monster ass. Yes I have a fashion sense, DON'T JUDGE ME

I dont really care. But I usually choose female, because when it comes down to it who's butt would you rather be staring at the whole game?

Just because its easier on the yes.I honestly play every game that i have the option of choosing i find it makes the game a kind of better experience except for mmorpgs because of the obvious reasons like fallout 3 for the perks like black widow. |I get cheap laughs of the dialouge and really would you rather look at a guys ass or a girls ass if your a guy

I never play as my gender.
Being forced into a male avatar annoys me.
I think boys are gross, I do not want to role play as a boy, ever!
