Not really my cup of tea. I don't think it's a bad game, but it's not for me.

Been playing the game online for a week or two (thank you PS plus membership) and it is kind of meh to me. At this moment, it seems like there is not real reason to play anyone other than Kratos. He's got range, he's got power and is level 3 is killer.

But, it would be a nice thing to have around just in case you have a party or you need to babysit for a few hours.

I had been excited about this game since it was announced, because there was a chance Sir Daniel was going to be in it, then he got announced and i became even more excited, then I played the beta and like some people here I initially found the game to be average, but when I had a clearer view of the controls the game suddenly became a blast to play. It's a really good game from the beta if more people gave it a chance they would see that it grows on them.

Also OP, if you are not a Playstation fan from the PS1 days to now I can understand why you would find the game to have a lackluster cast but for the people that stuck with Sony since the start it's pretty much the best roster they could ask for, even though there are some odd ones in there such as Donte (marketing reasons) and Big Daddy (also marketing reasons) there is overall some really good characters and the game does succeed in being a ceremony of PS history. Now if people could only try the game out for just more than one hour they would see how great of a game it is.

Dunno about that, there's no Crash, no Snake, no Tekken chars, no Abe. Out of the chars of the demo I ended up liking Parappa the more since his moves are the most fighting-game-like.

Some of the other ones are indeed cool to have but as someone who really got into games with ps1, this is sorta lackluster. It's also about the gameplay really, it's just...meh, boring, average. The novelty of playing with those childhood favorites will wear off eventually.
Huhh, there is a Tekken character, Heihachi Mishima is in the game, but I have to agree with you on the lack of PS1 characters, even though 6 out of the 20 character are from the PS1 days i feel like there should be more.

BTW Omar Kendall (the game's designer) said in an interview that they tried to put Crash in the game but Acivision simply would not allow it, as for Abe the developers of Abe's Odysee said themselves that they would love to have him on the game, so I think he has a high chance of coming as DLC.

There is a Tekken character there is Heihachi I believe and while there is no Snake there is Raiden and everyone likes him more anyway right? right? I share your concerns about the roster but I think you may be judging it to harshly I dont believe they meant this to be a technical deep fighter ala Blazblue, GG, Street Fighter , KOF etc but more as a party game and while the novelty will definitely wear off of playing these childhood favourites (are there any? characters I remember from my childhood sure but favourites is stretching it) it may have enough depth to keep people playing I doubt you will see any high level competitive play that for want of a better term serious fighters have but it may have enough to allow some fun with a few friends and some beers as the playing field will be more level simply because of its simplicity so fun could be had all round.

People who are a lot worse than you at say Blazblue, KOF , SC whatever will almost never win, which is good in a way as that shows the game heavily favours skill over luck (and has balance) but its not much fun for the other person and odds are they will stop playing as you maul them for the 50th time (unless they are heavily invested in improving) or so without them being able to do almost anything at least with this should be able to do something even if they dont end up winning, this is all speculation however as I obviously havent played the finished game yet.

Also no Lara Croft...just saying along with Crash she was pretty much the Playstation poster character for a long time. I think she was on PC as well but I always remember her as being heavily marketed by the playstation brand actually her and Crash were two of the very few examples where the character was marketed over the game Sony dosent often have that.

EDIT: ninjad on Heihachi still at least there is agreement

Well at first I thought it looked terrible, then I gave the beta a go last night and my opinion of it has moved up to pretty bland and uninteresting. Not to mention that it's a barely-concealed attempt by Sony to recreate Smash Bros. popularity. But being somewhat of a sucker for the appearance of Sly Cooper, the Big Daddy, Cole MacGrath, Jak and Ratchet in it, I'd say that if it were for some reason available to me for $1, I would definitely buy it to play on the occasions that boredom has struck me particularly hard. There is something novel about watching Captain Qwark almost getting crushed in the jaws of the hydra from God of War, I'll give it that.

Ah, so we have Heihachi in huh, that's good then. :D

Oh and I definitely said this game has it's audience so I'm not saying it's bad as much as it's just not my favorite thing in the world. I'd just be feeling this whole "why am I not playing a proper fighter right now" feeling were I to get the game.

As for those worse than me people, it really depends on their intention, if they can't have fun by merely improving but need to actually win, that'd indeed be a problem. I have trained a couple of people though and there's a few of them that had gone hundreds of matches without winning and still managed to enjoy the time we spent playing cause they had improved massively and they could feel how the matches were actually getting closer and closer by the end of it. I think that feeling, the feeling of closing in on someone, that's a unique kind of fun which is noteworthy.

I myself don't own KoF13 but people at casuals like it so I dabble in it from time to time, most of the time I lose but I'm getting better and I end up winning here and there, I enjoy the game and win or lose, the fact that the matches are good matches is enough to make them fun! :D

Your correct it does depend on their situation I remember losing god knows how many matches to a friend in SC on dreamcast and having fun even though the score was something like 100 - 2 in his favour for a long time as I would go away and improve comeback and get slightly better i.e 100 - 5 now eventually I got to be on a more or less even footing with him and he actually had to pay attention during matches rather than surf the internet while kicking my arse simultaneously. It definitely got frustrating though at times there is no way I would have carried on if I wasnt so determined to get better at the game because I liked it so much.

Most people I know in RL wont play me anymore at any fighting game and I am not saying that I have mad skillz or anything because I can say without modesty I dont its just my fundamentals tend to be a lot better than theirs so I almost always end up beating them and since they are not really invested in the game and its just a knockabout they tend to lose interest fast even though I try and help them i.e by explaining basic tactics moves etc and when they should be doing certain things. Cant say I blame them it takes a lot of time and effort to get good at a traditional fighting game which is one of the reason I like them so much as the more you put in the more you get out they definitely arent for everyone though.

As for KOFXIII damn that game is hard but oh so good I really wish some of my friends played that it looks absolutely beautiful as well and flows so well for me its the best fighting game released this gen (that I have played and I have played a lot) but again I am pretty damn bad at it as I have no one to play against and so dont improve much. Also my constant flitting between different fighters and lack of time dosent help either but I have fun so am not too bothered.

Don't have a PS3 so it's an automatic no for me.. but even if I did, there's just nothing about the game that appeals to me. SSB has a better cast and, quite frankly, pretty much any other fighter out there looks to have better gameplay. I guess I can see how it might make a decent intro point to fighters or a decent party game for those not familiar with the genre, and given some of the people working on the game I'm sure it probably plays well enough, but it just seems like a poor step down to me.

I'll probably end up picking it up, if for no other reason to tide me over until the new Smash Bros. I'm also tempted by the prospect of playing as Cole, Sackboy and Sly.

I'm just now wondering why they didn't do a Zelda-Shiek switchable style thing for Cole, rather than making his good and evil sides separate... Oh well.

"Absolutely no goddamn way", because although I don't oppose it or have reaosns not to buy it on principle, it just isn't my kind of game.

Actually for Cole the developers wanted to do a karma system like the one in inFamous, he at first would be neutral but as he progressed on the story he would become more heroic or more evil. Problem is Sucker Punch doesn't want that, they feel like Good Cole and Evil Cole as characters are different enough to be separated so it was that or no Cole at all.

I played it a bit on a game convention and it was pretty okay. Not on the level of Super Smash Bros but it was entertaining and engaging enough to be a fun party game.

Now if I only had people I could play with I might actually get it...

I used to be that kid who beat all the rest of the kids with stuff like tekken 2 - tekken tag and also SC, eventually some friends would get to my level and those would be the best of times but that was a long time ago. Ever since going competitive you're in a room full of "that guys", people who easily would beat their friends without effort...and I am "that guy" among them when it comes to BB. The matches are always close and whatnot...but the record is something like 30-4 by the end of the day.

What makes it fun though is that each one of them has something else they're better than me at. I get owned at KoF and GG I merely do "ok", it's this atmosphere that makes it fun and it's like you give and you get and it's all evenly matched so you have fun and nobody gets frustrated.

I feel as a teacher, if you manage to instil this fun atmosphere to your friends you can eventually manage to get them to a pretty good skill level.

In KoF I play Andy/Mr.Karate/Ralph, Andy I always liked, Mr.Karate is tengu-inspired and has lots of fun moves, Ralph has Luffy's Jet Gattling as his neo max. I don't know all the HD combos and stuff but I know footsies and whatnot, I know some basic corner combos and how to get basic damage with all of them. I win about 1 in 5 games against the top dogs in that game...but all matches are fun :D.

I don't like how you can't hit characters off screen to kill them and the power moves system looks like move spamming is the best way to get ahead.
This is how I feel. The levels that I got to play were far too small for my liking, and the background music on one of them was so annoying it distracted me from gameplay. There were balance issues, but I have been informed that those will be fixed by release.

I was pretty excited when I heard about this game, but it isn't at all what I want it to be. I guess what I wanted was an exact copy of Smash Brothers but with Playstation characters.

I'd try it out if I had a PS3, although it doesn't look very promising. I don't like that the only way to defeat an opponent is by supers only. The flashy KOs which come from bodies flying off-stage is what makes Smash so compelling. All Stars doesn't have that.

All Stars seems like an awkward in-between of Smash Bros. and a traditional fighting game. :S

Still, I hope it turns out to be absurdly fun. I'd love to be proven wrong.

Besides actually having a super meter it's really nothing like a traditional fighter. It plays just like a SSB game. Even the roll and dodge mechanics are ripped right off of it down to how you do them.

This is a game that I'm going to get once the price drops. I feel like I'm kinda of guilting myself in to picking up though...my PS3 is more or less neglected after all since I generally just use it to watch Blu-Rays and play PSX games.

I don't recall if the complete roaster is out but from the characters who I know of that are in it (for the hundredth time) I can't help but feel like this game should have been released a decade ago when Sony and the Playstation had an abundance of exclusive characters. It would have also been in direct competition with Smash Bros which could have easily lead to a sort of arms-race of 'who can make the better mascot fighter' kind of thing.
