Whatever the grass type is. It's always served me well so far, though admittedly I haven't played any of the third generation so I don't know how well it'd do on there.

Generation 1 and 2 are the best.

But generation 1 is my favourite as they started it all.

And generations 3 & 4 have such laughable concepts for Pokemon that I cannot be bothered to waste my time with them.

squirtle cause my mate went the fire one, cihorita the first time round, treeko and then the penguin. I found that 3rd generation had the coolest starters all three final forms are pretty awesome with swapert being one of my all times favourites (loved the typing). Disappointed with pearl/diamond starters. Had unique types for steel/water and grass/ground but poor move pool and the fire monkey was just a less awesome version of Blaziken(another personal favourite) not in terms of stats or moves just general awesomeness.

EDIT; I also loved generation 3, just wished they'd made the Regis a bit easier obtain

I'd have to go with the second generation of starters... I always wanted to choose the fire starter, because traditional logic states that Fire Pokemon are in short, SHORT supply... but I always chose Chikorita... just because it's adorable :3
cuteness doesnt always save your ass when you staring down a magmortar!
Well, someone already mentioned that Chikorita could eventually learn Earthquake, so that's one defense... and as long as we're bringing other Pokemon into the mix, I'd switch to Camerupt and call it a day >:D

Charmander all the way.

I feel really old now. My youngest cousins are just getting into Pokemon. I only played Blue/Red/Yellow, so all these new fangled Pocket Monsters are something alien to me :D

First generation all the way! On the second they were able to introduce new cool pokemons... now it's just sad in my opinion.... Lack of imagination.

First Pokemon was a Charmander! When he got to Charizard I was SO excited.

Bulbasaur because he had no weaknesses in gyms until the 7th, by that point you could have loads of extra pokemon that could crush that gym
or you could just use water types all around the place! anything with surf usually did that!
Lt Surge could kick your arse, I suppose you could have pokemon ready for then but by the 7th gym you have loads of choice
Because weaknesses and strengths aside... he is a f***in Dragon and has a sweet evolution =D that was why I ended up choosing him at least, that and I was a 8 year old that was hoping on the Pokemon Band Wagon
yes there isnt a young perosn alive who lived through the era of pokemon that can not deny that never liked pokemon or that they never watched it!
I believe Cracked.com said "If you don't see the appeal in Pokemon you were never a child"

In Generation 1, I chose Bulbasaur.
In Generation 2, I chose Chikorita.
In Generation 3, I chose Torchic.
In Generation 4, I chose Chimchar.

My favorite generation is 1, because it started it all.

And no, I don't have something against water types.

I've only played pokemon red.. alot.
I had it brilliant on there aswell... all but 2 of the original pokemon.
then someone stole it. and I have a good idea who too. :|
and thats the day I gave up on pokemon. and started to murder play The Sims
That is closer than mine I got it up to 110 then lost it or stolen and my silver was up to 150 then someone stole it and I took it back but only after they had erased the save file. My Ruby had a lot on it too but I lost it.

1st Gen; Red: Charzard, Blue: everything else traded to red, Yellow: Pikachu and everyone else

2nd Gen; Silver: Cyndaquil, Gold: everything else traded to silver

3rd Gen; Ruby: Treecko, Sapphire: everything else traded to ruby

4th Gen; Pearl: Chimchar,

Those were my picks, but as for my favorites that would have to be the starters from the the first two gens Same with the legendary trio. Very little is better than the Birds and Dogs in there respective types', and besides the legendary trio for 3rd gen are freakin rocks. Also for anyone who is a little rusty on there Pokemon heres something to help you.

Oops. I voted Gen 1, but I mean Gen 2. Gold and silver were the best in my opinion. They still had the feel of the old-school games, but they added enough stuff to make itself totally different without feeling gimmicky. Diamond and Pearl just suck. I can't stand either of those games.

Charmander was my first, then it was totodile then it was Mudkip and now it is my flaming monkey of doom.

I think pokemon saphire was the best pokemon game and in my team atm in pokemon platinum is:
infernape
Glaceon
Gardevoir
Quaqsire
Moltres
Cresselia

If it is a hard battle I usually bring out giriantine(sp?) to bring out so I can revive my other pokemon.
