Squrtle, Chikorita, Treeko, and Pinplup. Since the last one I played was Dimoand I know that it is now a level 100 Empoleon.

The first time I finished Blue I picked Bulbasaur at the beginning.
On Gold I picked Totodile. Many, many hours were spend on that game.

I stopped after that. The new pokemon appeared rather bad looking compared to the first 2 generations.

I only see the second generation as a first generation add-on, though. They're pretty much equal (first generation getting a slight Originals boost and a IHaveMewtwo boost, thus winning)

Strategically speaking, the Fire pokemon is the better choice. From early on, you are hard set to find a fire pokemon, but water and grass pokemon are in plentiful bounties. Of course, in the fourth generation, Ponyta and Stunky were available early on and both able to learn fire moves.

Since I've picked all of the pokemon at one time or another, I'll simply state my favorites.
Charmander, Chikorita, Treeko, and Turtwig.

Bulbasaur, Cyndaquil, Torchic, Piplup. Bulbasaur is super useful, Cyndaquil is cute and grows up to be badass, same for Torchic, and Piplup is adorable (but grows up ugly....)

Here's how you deal with Brock and Misty if you choose Charmander.

Get a Caterpie in Veridian Forest. Level it up until it evolves into Butterfree. CONFUSION BROCK'S ASS.
Get a Pikachu in Veridian Forest. Annihilate Misty with it.

The end.

I played all but the second generation twice, and in those playthroughs it wasn't who I choosed, but who I didn't. That namely being the grass type. I hate grass types, I really REALLY do. Empoleon in the new game is a beast, but can be annihilated by Infernapes fighting moves. Torterra, on the other hand, can likely be dominated by both of the other starters (Empoleon's ice and flying moves, Infernapes fire moves [duh])
torterra's ground moves are good against empoleon and infernape. His high defenses make sure he can get an earthquake in.
Empoleon doesn't go down with an earthquake and the only good type of Infernape is a fast Infernape. If you can hit him, someone has failed as a trainer.
torterra can take a hit from an infernape, he has ridiculous defense. after the infernape's mostly futile attack, the earthquake hits. and infernape goes down. but yeah, empoleons take a little more effort...
You've forgotten that torterra's special defense is only average. Infernape's fire is strong against torterra. Torterra is slow, infernape is fast. Infernape goes first - uses fire blast - Torterra is down.

you can also get a nidoran on the path the the elite four, level it until it learns double kick (somewhere around lvl 10) for brock.

infernape's special attack is only a little better than average, and most of his fire moves are physical anyway. it's a bit more of an even match up than i gave it credit, but torterra definitly has a great chance given the type disadvantages.

Silver was second generation.

Pokemon Yellow was my favorite game of my childhood by far (though I did have Red and Blue as well). If I had to pick 1 of the three starters, I'd go with Charmander. Though my favorite pokemon was Haunter. Half of the attacks never affected him, and dream eater would just destroy everyone I ever faced :p

Blast Burn? Infernapes super move, 150 damage, fire type, special attack. I seriously doubt that a well trained Infernape would lose to a well trained Torterra, but to each his own.

I think I had Squirtle

Then, Cyndaquil * i was actually pretty upset when my Diamond stopped working and I lost him haha, he was really powerful when he fully evolved to Typhlosion.

I can't remember the nameof the one i chose for Diamond but it was the fire one.

i nearly always start with the fire pokemon. they are harder to raise, but it is worth it in the long run.

Second Generation.

First was Red/Blue/Yellow
Second was Gold/Silver/Crystal
Third was Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald/FireRed/LeafGreen
Fourth was Diamond/Pearl/Platinum/HeartGold/SoulSilver

Also, Typhlosion was an epic Pokemon. That was the only Pokemon I ever needed to beat the Elite Four in that game, although, admittedly, the Elite Four were really weak in that Generation.
