I do not see any appeal. In my opinion it seems like people make up reasons to watch it. Like "Oh, they have mature personalitie" no, they don't, that's just a fake reason to watch a cartoon.

I don't get the fucking thing about the fucking show. It is a fucking kid show. The brony thing is creppy as fuck and it won't just go away. Everywhere on the net, the fucking poines are there. I hate them and I hate the fans.
Fucking thank you for your fucking opinion, it's fucking brilliant and we should all fucking listen to your undeniable fucking wisdom. We shall all fucking kneel before our new fucking overlord. Fuck.

OT: The appeal (to me, at any rate) lies both in the fact that the show is good on its own, and online communities contribute a lot. The whole "shoving ponies down your throat" thing has pretty much stopped as well (as far as I can tell), so the hatred some hold for it seems pretty unreasonable if you ask me. Like Mr. Fuck-A-Lot up here, for example.

Thanks for your fucking answer to my fucking post. Have a nice fucking day. I'm just sick of seeing this thread about that show every day here.
While I agree that this fucking thread has been done to fucking death, there's actually been a fucking while since this fucking thread popped the fuck up.

I think it's an awesome show for kids, and I can see myself enjoying it some 15 years ago. I saw a few episodes and, though they were cool, it doesn't really interest me enough to follow it. Still, I'm glad a show like that exists; there's far too few good western animation these days.

Fucking agreed.

OT:

It was a nice charming cartoon exploring character relationships in a brightly coloured girly world of acceptance fantasy. It's just plain a nice cartoon about nice things. MLP is practically my countermeasure to about two thirds of all anime being extraordinarily depressing at some points.

I admit Season 3 has killed the joy a tad since the characters themselves seem to be 'complete' and all we're doing now seems to be going through the motions.

I mostly just like a certain style of cartoon.
Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, Phineas and Ferb, Fairly Odd Parents, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic are all cool for a variety of reasons.
My Little Pony specifically is cool because now instead of "Creepy Clay Monsters From The Beyond" the the Ponies actually look cute, I love cute things. Incidentally 'Cute' is 60% of why I still love Pokemon since I've also been asked about that before.

MLP has a bunch of cool characters banded around I theme I unironically love, and that's friendship. Kingdom Hearts is another game that thrived on that. I'd say the comedy is a big part of what elevated the show to more than just average for me as well. Plus I actually like the music, it's catchy and fun.
So we got Animation, Friendship, Comedy, music, and cool Characters. Discord and Luna are win.
Also, i got my younger brother into it so it's a rare thing that we can sit down and watch together, and that's nice.

Not my favorite show, but pretty great none the less.

What i like about MLP is just the innocence to it. You go through life nowadays not even being phased by the most fucked up images in the world going through your head, which is all fine and dandy, but sometimes it's just nice to see something incredibly innocent. That's just me though, the community is actually full of reasonable people, as well, which is somewhat of a hard thing to find on the internet. These are just my feelings though.

I don't think your post had enough "fucks" in it. Remember, if you want to make a point, you have to make sure there's profanity in between regardless of emphasis.

I've seen dark times. MLP is one of the few positive things in my life. It makes me smile. I don't feel the need to justify anything.

Things like that are why the show's popular, along with the lighthearted nature of the show being a refreshing break from all the jadedness in our day-to-day lives. The characters are all very likable and relatable, with at least one character that a fan can personally identify with. For me it's Pinkie Pie, as I both love to make people happy and enjoy being batshit random. I can also relate to the abandonment issues she has, as I used to be heavily like that but without the "talking to bags of flour" part. Others, though, can relate to things like Twilight's nerdiness and love of learning or Fluttershy's fear of attention and love of animals.

In fact, my main gripe with Alicorn Twi is that the show could become way too focused on her alone, rather than being about all 6 of them. I don't want to see the others reduced to being merely side characters in Twilight's story, as that'll take away from what makes the show great. Only time will tell though if that'll be the case.

I dunno; in a world where Big Bang Theory or NCIS are considered respectable entertainment, liking MLP just seems like the decent thing to do.

Heck, NCIS is basically just MLP-but-cops with worse writing, shallower characters, and more implausible story lines.

Personally, I'm not a fan, but I see the appeal of the show, so I don't hate it.

Consider me neutral on the subject of MLP

I love the show, for a great many reasons, many of which have already been covered by other contributors.
It's not a perfect work, by any means. There are some pretty glaring continuity errors, and I found
the episode with the CMC's doing the talent show painful to watch. But over-all, pretty darn good, and
just about perfect for my daughter & I to watch together.
Not every episode is an out-of-the park hit, but more than a handful are.
Some episodes are very cliche, other episodes love turning cliches on their heads.
Even many characters that aren't around very long are well portrayed positive characters with some
depth. Think of Chief Thunderhooves and Little Strongheart.
I love the world that it has been set in--mythic backstory, sweet primary setting surrounded by epic danger.
I love the reoccuring theme of forgiveness. Judge me if you want.
Now, OP, this statement of yours troubles me a bit:

the show just feels vacant of any literary substance or tension, plot wise.
What do you mean by literary substance? Because the most common theme I see throughout the series is:
"My friends and I are not perfect. Sometimes one or more of us really screw up, or have very wrong ideas.
When this happens, we try to help each other through it, and sometimes grow as individuals or a group in
the process."
And (no offence, what you perceive is what you perceive) but if that is lacking in literary substance,
then the Odyssey would have to be considered a simple travelogue.

What? Respectfully neutral?

NO, YOU MUST PICK A SIDE AND VIOLENTLY OPPOSE THE OTHER. THUS IS MLP DISCUSSION LAW.

First season was thoroughly awesome, although premiere and finale were somewhat iffy.

Second had its ups and downs (higher peaks, lower valleys) and was great.

Third... has had its fantastic episodes, but most have felt fairly tame.

This is fine, and I appreciate how eye-opening the series as a whole has been. I'd be totally cool with season 3 being the final one, although I certainly wouldn't say no to a fourth. Either way, I'm keeping a watchful eye on the people involved to keep myself in the loop for their future projects.

It's not 'da best show evar' but some of the episodes are damn good. Endearing is a good word for it.
