How stupid. Taxing porn is just as bad as taxing cigarettes. I may not like cigarettes but it's not my place to punish those who do in any way.

Not sure where you are from but in England cigarettes are heavily taxed (over £5 for 20). I feel this is fair as smokers cost a fortune for the national haelth service to treat smoking related illness. Im not aware of any porn related illnessess though. Whatever mows your lawn...

But anyway it's a stupid idea, I can understand higher taxes on tobacco to discourage people and to cover the cost of treating the health problems that will probably be caused by it but porn, I don't think it can give you cancer.

Well where I'm from I also pay for health care separately, that tax probably does take into consideration the ill effects cigarettes have on the general public as a whole. Let's face it, you can't deny that the governments aren't making a huge lump of cash off of cigarette tax. A large portion of that tax goes into making crap like weapons, the drug war, chasing ghos- err the war on terror.

Also I'm not from the US of A, but I was just stating some examples that happen to fall into their category. I'm sure you could find some completely bullshit spending your government does and you can bet your ass some of that cigarette tax finds itself paying for it.

This is so incredibly dumb it's not even funny...
The whole point of pronography is so that people who cannot fulfill their sexual desires with other people can still do so in their own home. Now this of course will make little difference to those tho watch the occasional porno and have a wank, but for those who have no alternative it could cause problems. Will this not just increase the incentive for rape? Child molestation? And all kinds of other things we consider unnaceptable in society. Taxes like this are designed for things that are negative externalities, like ciggarettes and alcahol. These items have a negative impact on the person comsuming them, and those around them, often in terms of healthcare. The taxes on said goods are supposed to help pay for these negative consequences that occur as a result. Pornography is in no way a negative thing for any society... At least in my opinion. Hell there's even research trying to prove that masturbation can reduce the chances of testicular cancer. Why bother with this crap, if anything there should be a subsidy on it!

For me it depends on their reason for it, if it basically is a "sin tax" then I'm against it but if they got some better reason for it that I cant think of then I might accept it as good(probably not though).

I completely agree that our taxes arent spent well. Id much prefer my taxes went on schools or hospital rather than bombs or id cards. Despite this revenue does need to be raised and id prefer it was on none essensials that cause an additional strain on the state.

There's no need to tax porn. If people want porn then they should be allowed it and it doesn't hurt anyone so why tax it? With higher tax rates, the people who make the porn might make less money from it because they have to lower the price so people will still buy it with the high tax.
