Terribly wrong and here's why : If its a "Sin" tax then that implies God, and religion has no place in ANY government.

Wrong. Out here in Australia we have an alcohol tax - I don't like it (my prolific appetite for the hard liquor predefines this fact) but I can justify it because if it costs more people might not drink as much and it might help reduce drunken incidents on the street (I think this is BS but I can at least see the justification).

But a porno tax? WTF for?

Most of my stuff comes free from the net anyway :D
Justification over drinking = load of bollocks
It's been shown that the 'justification' has only lead people to buy pure spirits and mix drinks themselves because it's cheaper that way. On the same note... they also get DRUNKER that way.

originaly it was created because of 'drunken violence' however the majority of violent acts were kids aged 10-16 who had shit home lives, no education on drinking (IE: how to drink safely, when it's ok to drink etc.) and were just immature prats. The rise in cost didn't do anything against them. They just a) got more money from mum b) stole money/stuff c) stole alcohol flat out. (oh and the drunken kids thing isn't just australia before anyone thinks, it's very common in alot of cities to have groups of wanker under age kids walking around drinking and causing trouble). The kids are also used to drinking 'lolly water' as our good ol' krudd puts it, theres been a change now, they just take the straight spirits with them and drink that. Because of that there was a rise in alcohol poisoning causing exactly the opposite tohappen to what they wanted.

Other then all that, it costs people more to drink. Where does the extra money go? the government. What do they do? do they use the money to organise educational programs for schools etc. about drinking? no. Do they use the money to increase police presence to combat this stuff? no. Do they use the money to try and bring about change in the laws so the police can do more then return the brat to it's parents just to allow them to run away again just to be caught an hour later? no. Do they spend the money on an advertising campaign that the target audience laugh at wasting money? yes.

Ok I'll admit all of that crap had near nothing to do with the 'pornography tax'... however it's potential for the exact same things to happen.
People will get around the tax finding other things they can do (which are generally more 'sick and sinful' then what they had to start with IE: internet, make their own porn, underground sex buisnesses become more popular because they don't pay taxes etc.) While trying to just slam up a wall and say "DON'T DO THAT!" people will automatically resist and... do it more.

Except a theocracy, which is a system of government built and designed around the theology of the people. Thats also ignoring the fact that the majority of western cultures were founded based on christian ideals. Hence why there is a large emphasis on religion at times.

What IS wrong with it however is that in a democratic government, the goal is to represent the people's ideals and beliefs. If not everyone is christian/whatever THATS when it's innapropriate.

That's awesome. Completely hilarious.

(Wrong too, but hell, haven't you Americans noticed you should try to just scratch what you have and start anew? I mean seriously, your laws are pretty fucked up already.)

Porn is a necessary thing. A tax isn't a bad idea, they bloody well tax everything else, but maybe decrease it a little?
Explain?
Looking back at my post.. I don't really know myself. o.o

I guess that since the Government insists on taxing everything else that is supposedly 'bad', that this was bound to happen. But I don't think the tax should be an absurd amount.

I think I should have chosen 'Indifferent' instead. My brain is too broken at the moment. Ugh.
From all the porn?
Don't know. I'm not counting anything out though.

For all the people who said that you should just use the internet;

As difficult as it may be to believe that they can lead such poor, deprived lives, many people in Washington don't own computers to access the internet with. Most are older folk who don't understand the newfangled technology (when I say older folk I mean 40+). And since most of pornography's demographics are older, single men (well, single men in general), that leads to a lot of people who would rather have a hard copy of a skin flick than deal with the maintenance and effort it takes to own a computer.

There's also the viruses.

It's a fine idea, because this is what the government should be doing with pot, money for government, more jobs in the country because of the industry

Could you elaborate on that for me,you know the "Porn is a necessary thing" thing? I'm not sure how that could be,I'm pretty sure life doesn't (and never has) revolve around porn.

What, porn being necessary? Or it not being a bad idea?

After reading more posts, I'm thinking more and more that the tax is pretty much taking the piss out of people and it is a stupid idea. I should put that into my first post.

When will uptight governments realise that the adult industry is not a haven of evil and moral corruption, and just loosen the leash?

The reason the government wants to tax the adult industry is because there's so much illegal activity associated with prostitution and porn etc.. And it's associated because adult entertainment IS so tightly restricted, and so running a legitimate business becomes freaking difficult.

I agree that adult entertainment needs to be kept away from kids, or at least introduced to them in a safe environment, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. People get off, it's what we do. It's amazingly normal. If a government can subsidise Viagra and encourage the use of contraception, why not get behind this aspect of the industry too?

Any other Aussies here voting Australian Sex Party at the next Federal election? I know I am!

Yeah this thing is ultimately useless. But some people believe that off the internet is where the "exclusive" stuff is. They obviously haven't been looking hard enough. Not like I would.

As for the main question I really do think its wrong and a messed up way to punish people for their wants which is what it seems like even if its not true.

Does anybody even buy porn? I mean you can just watch it on the internet for free anytime you want.
For the love of whatever divine being you worship, read at least three posts back! I just explained WHY there are people who buy porn!

Aw, that's terrible. Well, there's already a high tax on alcohol, cigarettes and basically anything else the government thinks is bad for you, so I guess it was just a matter of time.
