Hey there Escapees. I've got a question: Is Portal worth the money? I've been thinking about buying it from the Orange Box set but I dont know if I should. I know your someone with a Portal gun and you have to kill a robot named Glados, and theirs Cake but thats all I know about the game. Ive read reviews and watched reviews and it looks alright but I've not seen enough of it to know if its worth the money I'd throw at it. Yahtzee says its as close to god as it gets but Im not convinced. It appears as though its just like extreme puzzle solving while turrets shoot at me. Is their any action? Is their a story to it? Are there other guns or just this portal gun? Is it worth it?

Also as a sub-part, did you like the game? Did you find it worth the money??

EDIT: You should all know, that i intend to buy the entire Orange box, if i decide to buy the thing at all.

It's worth the money, but don't go in expecting it to be as great as people say it is. It's horribly overrated.

portal is worth any amount a person makes you pay for it. play it. you'll understand.

portal is a work of art... and shitty paintings go for millions. art is worth it.

edit: portal is also a great example of something i've tried to tell non-gamers. they always say ''why do you just go around killing everything? that doesn't seem fun to me.''
portal is the prime example of a game not based off bloodletting. proof that games aren't just slaughterfests.

You just get the one portal gun and it is all just puzzles and I usually hate puzzle games but I liked portal.

It doesn't deserve some of the praise it gets. It isn't a work of art or anything, it shouldn't be a museum. However, it is a fairly innovative FPS with a good story and some funny dialogue. In short, get it.

Yes. It's absolutely worth the money. It's hands down one of the best games I've played.

Great game, good humour. Definitely worth the money.

It isn't the holy grail of gaming, but it's one of the better games this generation, get it.

I never thought it was as earth-shattering as Yatzee said it was, but I saw it through until the end and I loved it. Definitely get it, mainly because I can't say "Well, you could get X, it's cheaper".

It's an excellent game. It's short, but the puzzles are clever, the story is clever, and there's some great humour. I recommend everyone try it at least once.

I heard great things about it [sub]some of them not involving cake[/sub] and I'd go so far to say go ahead,if nothing else, you get the rest of the orange box as a consolation prize.

You say that but there are a couple people in this thread saying not only is it good, its god on wheels. So is if its just meh, is it still worth it?

Same, I'm not one for puzzle games but I really enjoyed it. Take note though that when someone says it's four hours they're stretching it a bit. And any reviews you read would of been written when they orange box came out, so that would of been taken into account when they reviewed.

It's fun though, with a great sense of humour and some intrigue (especially if you're a HL2 fan).

Portal is a fun little game, and it's quite funny (if you haven't been on games forums in the last couple of years and are sick of the jokes). That being said, it is really short and it doesn't offer a great deal in terms of replay value.

Yes, you should get it.
But it'd be far better value to get the entire Orange Box at once, and not just Portal on its own.

Ok but what story? what characters are there? Ive seen nothing but the Glados robot and some guy running around with the portal gun.

See thats what im afraid of. Ive heard that its ungodly short, so if there is no replay value is it still worth it?

They are the characters. The story is short it's hard to give hints, and I'm not really sure how I'd describe it, it's both great but in a way almost non-existent. It's really good though, it's not full price is it? Just buy it already! It is short but you can dl challenge rooms I think. Just do it.

Great game...but it's relatively short. Once you beat it and the extra puzzles (I got the "still alive" version off XBL), the fun level goes way down. My only complaint about the game is lack of replayability though, the rest is pure genius and some of the best dark humor in video game history.

Umm, bit of a toughie. I'd say, if you don't have any of the games in the Orange Box, get it, because it is the greatest deal in gaming. By itself, get Portal if you don't mind it's faults. It is painfully short (has great pace tho), the first few levels are just tutorials, there isn't any other usable guns or gadgets, and it is a tad bit uniform in the graphics area. Plenty of white and grey walled rooms. That said, it is a tight single player experience truly like none other, and the puzzles and challenges are sometimes quite tricky. I enjoyed it immensely, and you will too if you go in with the right mindset. Just be aware, the wait for the sequel will kill you.

Speaking of which, ive never played either of those games or their predecesors. I played Half life 1 when i was young but dont remember a lick of it. Is the whole orange box still with it seeing as how id get two extra games i know nothing about?
