No, and I wouldn't, but I'll happily laugh at others who have fallen for it. Its bad enough when a woman joins a game and every fucking guy proceeds to interrogate/insult her, let alone them actually then stooping to that level of pathetic-y-ness.

Luckily none of those are on the Escapist. 95% of the forum's population most certainly do have at least 5 mental disorders of varying severity. Yes sir. No bullshitting on that front. The internet told them, don't you know?

I am a girl, but I've never used the fact I am a girl to get a guy to do something for me online. Hell, even IRL, I only ever do it as a joke. But seeing how many guys do it to other guys and seeing how well it works for my female friends in real life, I may have to start relying on my feminine wiles more.

I kind of have a habit of assuming that anyone I encounter online is male until established otherwise. I have so far on 3 occassions quoted someone with something along the lines of 'what he said' only to be corrected that they are in fact female, which really should by now hammer home that I need to be pick something more gender nuetral when doing that. I'm going on a bit of a tangent but while it might be kind of fun to post as a girl just to see what unfolds, I ultimately don't see much point. I'm not really a particularly masculine or iffeminate male, just somewhere in the middle. And I don't think I'd make a very convincing women as I don't know that there is any disticntive way to act like a girl, other going down stereotypical routes and doing something like a female otaku who ends every sentence with various cutesy emoticons ^_^:3. After all, we're all individuals and I'm sure there are plenty of women with a more tomboyish, masculine nature to them. I'm an aspiring writer and when I think of a character I don't try to think if this is how a person of this gender/race/sexuality/religion etc. would act but just try to make them their own unique individual.

/End rant

Regarding MMO's, I know a lot of guys play female characters (which is cool), but I've also heard of (and known) some guys pretending they are female IRL in order to get help/free stuff off of unsuspecting guys.
I'm a bit skeptical of if this actually works though, as I'm a girl who plays, and while I dont make a big deal out of it, the most I've gotten is generally harrassment/unwanted flirting.
So I have a question for you, what do you guys think, and have you ever pretended to be female to get things?
If yes, did it work?
If no, would you, given the oppurtunity?
Being a girl who plays a girl in video games - it does open doors, and you don't have to be a gutter slut or anything remotely like that (not that some people don't go for the gold anyway, /sigh). The trick is using one's power for good, not evil ^.~

I'm surprised by the lack of 'yes' answers.

I think the opposite happens a lot more: Females who play males to keep the creeps away.
Lack of 'Yes' answers? I'm surprised by how many users actually ARE admitting to acting like girls lol. The fact that girl gamers are idolized so much in the gaming community kind of speaks to how sad the "gamimg culture" still is.

Every female character I make in a game without voice chat, I do exactly that.

Works every. Damned. Time. No regrets. I mean, it is a video game, after all.

Heck, everyone I know on Guild Wars still think I'm the girl I pulled from a google image search onto their guild forums.. they'll never figure it out.
Did you know reading this post while looking at your avatar made this hilarious?

OT: Never really, I'm always a guy. Besides there really is nothing worth while to use that sort of tactic.

I made a female character in Guild Wars once and got a ton of freebies, but I never pretended to be a girl IRL.

My answer may not qualify, based solely on the fact that I don't play online games. However, when I play a game with a fully customizable character, my first action is to make that character female. This is mainly because if I'm going to be looking at this exact same character the entire time I'm playing, I'd rather it be someone I enjoy looking at.

My choice is not so much one of personal expression, but merely cosmetic preference.

I've never made a big deal of my gender on games, but seeing all these guys doing it makes me almost wish I had! I honestly didnt think that kind of thing really worked.

Why indeed I have...I have pretended to be female.

Could not help myself. :3 I am a female for all of you who don't know. <.< Even though it's obvious I am. :) I also have never pretended to be a male. <.<

I've never made a big deal of it - but I've had serious conflicts with some people who did (and used their power for evil, and had to be usurped and it was a mess - but there were younger teens involved and it couldn't be allowed to stand) and I ended up leading a group - which, by the population of such games, was more guys than girls. Being able to have them level with me and be disposed to being in a helpful mood around me was something I cultivated for the benefit of the entire group many times. Difference being that I kept things crisp, clear, and above board (as it were) at all times. Asking one guy to be on time to another guy's event because you'd be happier not listening to him complain isn't what I consider an evil manipulative move exclusive to my gender - but it's a lot easier to get a positive answer as the 'fairer' gender I think sometimes. I saw other guy - leaders attempt similar feats only to get brushed off or ignored, in other words.

I don't delude myself that charisma is my strongest stat - so... there it is. I think I was more successful by recognizing it, but not making a big deal of it or overplaying it. Happily - there wasn't any risk of extra entanglements that comes with that path sometimes, because my fiance played the same game in the same group and that was well known and understood from day 1.

No, despite almost always playing a female character in MMOs I never pretend to actually be female. If I'm on a role-playing server, or in a RP guild, I will certainly play my character as female but never pretend I am one in real life.

I ran an RP group in which half the female characters were played by guys, and that was fine. Since we had a long storyline that involved romantic aspects they had to disclose their gender to any player they were roleplaying towards that trend with, but since we were such a small group it became generally known really quickly - being tight knit and having plenty of out of character chatter/activities. It was never a problem for anyone that I knew of, in or out of the group.

I don't. Well, not intentionally. If someone assumes that I'm a girl, I just go with it without correcting them. Let 'em dream...

Ah, I forgot honesty is optional online. Still, speaking for myself I just can't get into the game playing as a male which may or may not say a lot about me. Mark Meer? pfft. Only for Tali.

As a tangent, I present Exhibit A:

Amazonia, a female centric guild that allows people of either gender to participate, as long as they follow their tenets. Among them, female avatars only.
