I have done it. It's pretty funny how people just lump stuff on you if they think you're a girl.

I have, once.
But it wasn't for items, I was playing an MMO and needed help on a certain dungeon, so I found random guy to help me beat it. I had two characters that needed to beat the dungeon though. I didn't want to just ask the guy if he could help me beat the dungeon again on a different character, so I asked if he would help my friend too. Since my "friend" (other character) happened to be female (armor was gender based so it was female to use the armor my main could not) I avoided sounding like I was male while I was playing through the dungeon.

I did however get a ton of free armor. I wasn't even asking, people who I partied with would just throw stuff at me. I think it had something to do with the fact that armor was gender based and there was an event at the time which rewarded a ton of female armor. Since most players were male, everyone had a ton of crap that they couldn't use.

No, and I wouldn't, but I'll happily laugh at others who have fallen for it. Its bad enough when a woman joins a game and every fucking guy proceeds to interrogate/insult her, let alone them actually then stooping to that level of pathetic-y-ness.
Or just start continuously talking about random crap for no damn reason when they join. Serously, this has happened damn near every time when I play Xbox Live. When a girl happens to be in a party, everyone is fucking talking. When she leaves, it's silence.

Quite an odd phenomena, actually.

As for me, I don't pretend to be a girl. Though that doesn't stop me from squealing like one when something totally awesome happens, as people from the Halo group can attest to...
See, I'm on PSN, and I only use my mic to tell people talking extremely loud in a foreign language to shut up, and to join in an argument with americans who are being dicks to everyone

Nah. I don't even really think about it.

I did try being a girl IRL once, but that only partially worked as I'm built like a brick sithouse and can literally sing bass.

Still it was cute just to try ^-^.

I had that in EVE online actually, and I'm pretty sure you don't really use gender there.

Some people are just nice :)

I'm surprised by the lack of 'yes' answers.

I think the opposite happens a lot more: Females who play males to keep the creeps away.
I'm a girl and i have never used my 'feminine charms' to get anything from games. But like Aisku said, I have pretended to be a boy so I don't get harassed.

Never.
But a guy I know pretended to be a chick on an MMO and got stuff ranging from gear to consumables to money.

I've never pretended to actually be female, but while I played Eve Online I played as a female character and let people make their own assumptions about what gender I am IRL.

It became a part of the game, I'd try to avoid using gender specific words when referring to myself. If asked I'd ask them what they think, then tell them I'm a guy. It was pretty amusing, most people assumed I'm female right off the bat, a few people who'd hung around the eve radio in game channel with me were shocked upon discovery that I have in fact got a penis.

I am a male however I clicked the 'No, I am female' option on your poll.

WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW?!

However I have tried it once or twice just to see what the game would be like from a different perspective.

I'm a bit skeptical of if this actually works though, as I'm a girl who plays, and while I dont make a big deal out of it, the most I've gotten is generally harrassment/unwanted flirting.
Yeah I've never got a free ride and those who have helped me have been mates that I have helped back and suchlike.

I kind of think this is a bit of a myth, either that or I don't act slutty enough...or something lol.

A friend and I joke that when a man finds out he is talking to a woman online they imagine the girl to be fresh out of the shower towel-clad and with a towel in thier hair. It's some kind of law. xD

On WoW, when I used to play that crap, repetitive game, I had a female Belf Mage named Lights (with an alt umlaut i)
More than 1 douchefag thought that I was ACTUALLY female.
Most of the time, I would just play around until they finally figured out that I was a dude.
But there were a few times that the guy was so incredibly certain that I was a girl, that I would have no choice but to troll the fuck out of him by pretending to be a girl.
No, I would not be one of those guys that sent him pictures or anything, but the things I would say, were intentionally meant to be considered to be feminine.

Do I feel bad? Fuck no.
Do I feel less masculine? Fuck no, trolling is fun.

When voice chat started getting popular in my guild we lost so many "girl" members.
I bet it's because they had weiners.

Every female character I make in a game without voice chat, I do exactly that.

Works every. Damned. Time. No regrets. I mean, it is a video game, after all.

Heck, everyone I know on Guild Wars still think I'm the girl I pulled from a google image search onto their guild forums.. they'll never figure it out.
Congratulations, you're a transvestite.
It may be a game, but you are deceiving actual people.

I did it when I was quite young playing runescape, got a stack of free shit because I made a female character and people were asking me to be their girlfriend IRL. I was like "Gimme x amount of gold" and they did.

I then reported them when they tried to have cyber sex with me. Was sort of hilarious.

I play mostly female chars (they usually look a lot better than the male counter-parts) and whilst I don't go out of my way to make sure people know I'm a guy, I do mention it if anyone starts flirting with me as only a fool would (but perhaps not after making them look a little stupid first xD).

Yes, quite a bit. Creepy people deserved to be mock, however I have never tried to get any favour or items from them... will have to see if that works also.

Nope, and I wouldn't. Not only I'd have nothing to gain from pretending to be female, I'd likely do a bad job of it. Even if I convince the other person in question that I'm female, I'd likely get bored and see how hard I could push it.
