During the Cold War (and for many years afterward) the government had many agents who were supposedly psychic. They also dabbled in projects to unlock the secrets of psychics. I don't think it worked, but they haven't spoken on it since then, so who knows? Maybe there is an Alma somewhere! (Yeah, that's likely)
Then again, this is the same CIA that had its agents secretly poisoning each other with LSD as a part of training, among other things. Hardly any conclusive evidence about real psychics there.
Yeah, that's kind of the point. Somewhat crazed, these governments be.

I'm looking for the book. This link will have to do, but feel free to disbelieve it. It sounds a little odd to me, but then, somewhat crazed these governments be.

Derren Brown (a popular British hypnotist) is the proof that psychics simply use the skills of Cold Reading and suggestion to bamboozle the audience into thinking they're psychic.

Very impressive and highly skilled, but not magic.

Yes, I do believe in all forms of extra-sensory perception, but I do not believe the middle-aged women and men who wander around flipping tarot cards like they're pages in the book of the future, or anyone who claims to talk to angels or spirits.

[Edit]

John Edwards is the biggest douche in the universe, and needs to be smacked upside the head with a mac truck.

Its definitely something to look into; I mean, weren't there government psi-spies, or something during the cold war?
Erana, you're confusing real life with metal gear again.

I don't think people are psychic. I think that some people are just subconsciously more aware of what's going on around them than they realise, and then that information comes out in a different form - like a dream. Besides which, most psychic predictions turn out to be false, but media attention only ever focuses on people who claim to have predicted something that happened. But, hey, keep throwing darts at a target and eventually you're going to guess something correctly.

To everyone doubting Erana's point about psychics... [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargate_Project]

Enjoy the references and Further Reading at the bottom of the page by the way, as I wouldn't dream of endorsing a wikipedia page for such things.

That is clearly a cover story for the real Stargate project. You know the one with Richard Dean Anderson traveling through worm holes to fight alien races.

I hate psychics.

They're stupid, cold, heartless people who prey on the emotions of people who have recently gone through something devistating to them.

Oh, yeah, your mother was a beautiful woman and now she's at peace...now where's my pay check?

Just look at this:

I hate her...

What a nasty *****.

And what the fuck is that dip shit Montel Williams trying to cover up for her?

I believe in the supernatural and psychics. Maybe not in the way medieval christians though there really really REALLY was a god, or in the way i believe my neighbours cat exists, but I believe in it.

Specifically, I think it's not just lies or delusions, but I'm very skeptical to most whom claim to practice it. Some witch using "spells" and painting pentagrams is garbage in my opinion. I have greater respect the less dramatic mediums.

If it does exist, it's not in a manner that you can apply lasting laws and rules to, more abstract to be precise.

They're a bunch of liars who're good at what they do, telling people what they want to hear, but not what's right.

I'm not entirely against psychics. I don't believe in what they do at all, but if helps some people get through the day then fair enough. However, there's always a risk of vulnerable people being exploited by less scrupulous or sensible psychics.

Sylvia Browne is particularly nasty.

Your average psychic at least tends to sell people comfort, closure, or something to generally make them feel better. Browne doesn't care how people feel so can cause them a lot of mental anguish, and takes a particularly huge amount of money for the privilege.

ok your going to hate me for saying this but psychic blood runs through my veins. My nana and my mum both can predict certain dangers in the close future. The Lockeby Disaster (plane crash) my mum saw in her dream just a day before. She could not see where, when or how but she saw the plane crash and the damage done. She had told her boyfriend at that time of what she had seen. The next day the plane crashed. Needless to say they were both freaked. This is not the first or last time she has predicted crashes. Though i barely belived her until one day she came into my room and said 'by the way sometime in the next three days two trains are going to crash together.' I ignored it but exactly three days later two trains collided after a switch on the track failed to move. I had never experianced her premonitions before that but it actually had me crying in fear.

I have told her if she tries hard enough she could be able to see the crashes clearer. Times, places e.t.c if she focuses onto them. Problem is she is too scared and horrified that she refues. She hates the fact that she has these dreams and does not wish to try and enlarge the problem anymore then the rough estimate of days that she gives which comes through as a feeling.

Most, according to me sensible, psychics agree it's not some special gift, but a mindset that most can learn.

Focusing on said image is actually counter-productive. The idea, once again among those I respect, is to tune down your own interpretation of what you see.

BTW, this poll lacks an option between "I'm not sure" and "Yes, definitely".

No, I don't believe in psychics, but some people genuinely do, so who knows?
Maybe there is something to it...
