I've never really listened to rap, thus I have no real idea what it's about. If someone would kindly recommend some of the best I would listen to it and give a verdict, but as of now I am completely ignorant to the genre.

Check out the videos I posted earlier and the Talib Kweli videos posted by Serafis. All of those are great examples of excellent modern day rap/hip-hop/R&B.

Radio Rap = Radio Country

Its all about inflating the listeners ego while maintaining a stereotype.

Rap: Gangsters are the most badass

Country: Cowboys are the most badass

Throw in some over generalizations and repeat.

The undenyable classic albums of the genre are:

Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back (was in Rolling Stones top 100 albums of all time) and Fear of a Black Planet. Public Enemy are noisy and political, generally considered the best
Run DMC - Raising Hell, generally considered the first classic rap album, contains Tricky and Walk this Way.
De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising, left feild rap, often called "hippy rap", totally different from any rap stereotypes people have, funny and sweet, my first favourite rap album

Some more recent classics
Jay Z - The Blueprint, basically does classic rap the best, very well produced
The Roots - Phrenology, I think the first rap band to use entirely live instrumentation these guys are currently Jimmy Fallon's house band
OutKast - Stankonia, a strange beast, unclassifiable almost.

Rap can suck it. Hip Hop on the other hand...
That sentence doesn't really mean anything. Hip hop is the genre, while rap is the vocal style. Hip hop does turntablism (ie. music produced by just DJs rather than a DJ and rapper (eg. the Avalanches, DJ Shadow)) as well.
Its kindof like saying "Playing guitar can go suck it. Rock music on the other hand..."

I hate the culture it has created of entitled, sexist, materialistic dirtbags. Maybe not all rap is about money and mistreating women, but there are enough people who think it IS, and even plenty who think that's something to emulate.

I don't hate the way all rap SOUNDS, but the popular, generic stuff is just awful. It's the Twilight of music-objectionable on grounds of both taste and message.

I dont like it.

Most of it seems quite shallow.

I prefer something with a deeper meaning.

Atmosphere (Slug and Ant) stand right up there as two people I consider absolute musical geniuses. Their songs are all about love, life, overcoming, remembering the good times and the bad times, themes that speak to anyone. True talent, for sure.

I find Del to be a very creative artist as well. The Deltron 3030 album is rather quite interesting. I can't think of any other sci-fi space opera concept album out there in the world of hip-hop. And there's some interesting commentaries underneath it all, as well. His flows are complex, and very lyrical (often iambic).

Isn't eternal evil concerned with thievery
Medieval prehistoric rhetoric well we ahead of that
Lay it down with soundwaves that pound pavement
Original minstrels, my central processing unit
is in tune with my heart for this art
Not artificial cause that makes it hard to miss you
Copycats finish last in the human race
Staying glued to safes, too prude to take a buddha break
We got espers that let us bless with fresh shit
Undetected by yes men questing for five fleeting nanoseconds of fame
Protecting the brain from conspiracies against my cosmos
While I float to Neo-Tokyo with Opio
or discuss combusitible rust clusters with Plus
Evade cyber police in a computer crib confuse the kids
but I can make a kickin rhyme that's sacred
Telepathic mind that takes its greatness from the Matrix

Swollen Members actually put out a good dose of solid, feel-good rap as well. Extremely catchy hooks and good for bumping.

Outkast/Andre/Bog Boi are definitely in the avant-garde of the hip-hop scene, and always have been. They do their own thing, and do it amazingly well.

The old-school scene will always be top-class, as well. It's hard to find a song from those early days that isn't simply just......kickass.

---

Now, I don't have much respect for the distinct genre of "Gangsta Rap." Unfortunately, it's by far the most popular, and gives the rest of the blanket genre of hip-hop a bad name.

I like all rap, but I also like metal. Why be limited musically? If you hate the stereotypical mainstream rap try listening to Atmosphere, Mr. Lif, The Living Legends, The Grouch or even Talib Kwali and you will see more of the art involved. If you like good poetry you should be able to find a rapper that speaks to you.

Also, MC Frontalot is awesome as all hell.

I like most Rap songs that have a deep meaning and when the rapper seems to rap with a passion about that deep meaning. Pointless rap though sucks in my opinion, because in that case i'd rather listen to something where the singer is better and the music isn't a constant beat, with the exception of drum & bass.

I like some older rap songs, but at the momnet its either shit, gangsta or mixed with with awful sounding techno effects so they sound like 14 year olds. Its boring and repetative. I dont have a problem with it being about cash sucess and hoe's, since thast what alot of rock music is about as well.

I love me some NWA & Run DMC, the vast majority of modern mainstream rap is laughably shallow...and uninteresting to listen to as well.

Rap used to be fun and occasionally offer thought provoking social commentary. It's all about the ego now, the things these people say makes me embarassed for them.

I saw a documentary on rap onces. IT brought up a good point about the genera having potential, but never really evolving.

I see rap as a good tool to mix with other music. Rapping seems like a lyrical style that should be applied to a song, maybe not the entire theme of it. For example, the Gorillaz use rap and hip hop all the time in their songs, but they mix it up and bring in new elements as well. Its a shame that Rapping is often associated with very violent themes, because it can be used to create some very interesting songs.
Oh yeah. Hip Hop adds an incredible new angle to rock.
