cause to me it just seems like people talking with beats in the background. and it doesn't sound good i don't want to hear black people talk when i listen to music.

Some rap might be fine, but the lyrics are usually terrible, the singers have no rhythm to how they rhyme, and theres nothing else going on.
Other music might have instruments along with it, but rap is just violent rhyming.

It's all about underground. They actually have meaningful lyrics.
This pretty much wins the topic.

The rap you hear on the radio isn't the rap that I enjoy. Sure, it can be catchy, but it seriously provides nothing. If you really want good rap, you have to listen to less mainstream artists; i.e. Atmosphere, CYNE, Talib Kweli, Dilated Peoples, Asheru, Jurassic 5, etc.

Dislike rap that's weak, I'm sure you know who I mean. I prefer a lot of old rap (and I mean a lot) as well as Eminem and Linkin Park.

I disagree but that's a great stab, have to remember that.

Rap, at its core is more like poetry than music, and when rap was new and fresh it was beautiful and often very moving, but lately its been moving more toward the Eminem, T-Pain, Ke$sha crap that's all about "whores, guns, and whores getting shot with guns" - Ben Croshaw.

So I dislike modern rap, older rap, however is a completely different concept.

I hate the great majority of it. Great majority meaning only one or two songs I like and I despise the rest...

Saying rap is about gangsters and hoes is like saying metal is about head banging morons that target angst teens that don't fit into society.

We went from the days when life on the street was the basis to all rap and rappers acknowledged the fact that life wasn't easy when you grew up in a place that bred crime and ignorance. Today, the last song on the radio I heard was "I wanna fuck every girl in the world". The genre has certainly fallen in my opinion.

When I saw this thread I was shocked only two people so far have mentioned Lupe Fiasco, arguably deepest person in the game right now. His lyrics are incredibly complex and inspiring, along with interesting beats to back it up. Check out "Hip Hop Saved My Life" Its not his best work, but its a good introduction to people who aren't used to wacky flows.

People hate rap because well...

But anyway, I like rap because it's a lot more than "gangsters and hoes", contrary to popular belief. I love the way some rappers tell stories in their songs, but I have a great appreciation for the beats too, because I know how hard they are to make. My theory is that most people who have that opinion of rap haven't listened to very much rap, or have just chosen to listen to bad rap.

In the words of Scroobius Pip "Gangsters, b*tches and bling arn't part of the element and they never were"

Rap itself being the lyrical verse can be spoken about anything, generlisation on peoples attitudes, personal choices and lifestyles are up to them and their record label.

Anyone can throw together a drum track and yell a couple swear words these days and call it a song, and this frustrates me. Although, If the lyrics are good/deep and not too redundant, I can stand it.
As a musician, what I really hate is the fact that it's considered "music" despite the fact that it lacks so much musical creativity. There are so many people out there with so much underrated talent that deserve to be recognized, but they're overlooked because most (not exactly all) mainstream "music" is appreciated because "da b3@t is hella siiiiick" or whatever.
It saddens me to know that no my age loves Zeppelin, Rush, or The Who anymore. There needs to be more bands like that around, and there probably are, but we just can't see them past all the "musicians" being shoved in our faces that rap about partying and cash and all that cliche' BS.

Gah, sorry. I could rant about this forever, this really is something that grinds me gears, but I'll stop.

Hey thanks for showing me that song! Thats the kinda stuff I like. Rap gets a bad reputation "rapp...haha...see what I did there?" but those who posses talent will find a way to use it "same as all other types of music"

All about gangsters hoes and money? That's unfair!
It's also about bitches and murder!
If you want violence-free rap listen to some MC Hammer, De La Soul or Beastie Boys.
