I absolutely love hip hop.

I love the alternative stuff, the underground stuff, the mainstream gutter stuff, and the mainstream club stuff. As long as it has great delivery, catchy hooks, and fantastic production, I couldn't give a shit about where it comes from or who's making it.
This.

I find that most of the people who have directed disdain towards Hip-hop and Rap usually do so because they've heard one or two songs on the radio or MTV and use that small amount of data to make unfounded generalisations on the genre. It's like listening to a few Metal bands and then claiming that all Metal is just a bunch of guys with long hair playing drop D power chords and pounding on trash can lids. You can dislike the genre because of the style but don't attempt to define what it is when you don't give it a chance.

Split it into three sections, together we shall discover the greatest Hip-hop groups from the Underground, the Mainstream, and the Alternative (I've yet to figure out what groups fall into this category- it has always been Mainstream and Underground for me)!

I hate the MTV/Mainstream Gangster-ized rap that has spread like a plague.
But when it's good, decent rap I'm all for it, I only like one raper, Lupe Fiasco.
Also band that has strong rap influences, MSI(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR5JL_K4HgY)

None of those options reflect my opinion, so I won't vote.

I listen to everything and Hip-Hop/Rap is one of my favorite genres (Second to Rock), but today's mainstream Hip-Hop is absolute shit, which is why I only listen to old school (Tupac, Biggy, NWA), underground (I.E Jedi Mind Tricks, The Cool Kids, Army of The Pharaohs) and a few select mainstream artists who have either been around before it turned to shit (I.E Jay-Z & Common) or the rare talented individuals (Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, etc.). And also a few of my personal friends who rap and are quite good (I won't name them here because that's whoring, if you want to check them out pm me.)

Anyway, that's my take.

Asking "do you like rap" is like asking "do you like electronica," there are many, VERY different kinds. From oldschool, dance, hip-hop, trip-hop, ganster(a'), underground, political, etc.

most of it sucks.

But when it's good, it's REALLY fucking good.

See: Jedi Mind Tricks, The Urban Sophisticates

FUCK Kanye.

I can't say I'm a fan, but then again all the rap I hear is the crap that's coming out today. Recently I stumbled across El-P and he's pretty damn good if you don't mind the obvious polictical overtones. My favorite songs by him would be League of Extroardinary Nobodies and Flyentology. Definately look into this guy.

I didn't vote at all, because none of those options apply to me. Some rap is good and clever like any style or genre of music. I don't like 'gangsta' rap talking about bitchez and hoes and who's whos dog. I like one's that make me think like Scrubilos(?) Pip or decent ryhming sweet sounding songs like Buck 65.

Rap is just another genre of music that might not be your preference. I listen to just about anything. I cannot stand only 2 segments of music... those being country and opera. Rap is as cliched as country. Country music talks about their redneckness, pickup truck, drinking, dogs, farms, and small towns (not nesscarly in that order). Rap talks about hoes, getting some, hustling, cars, shoes, drugs, and shootings. I love rap/hip-hop as much as I love alternative rock. It's all what you don't mind listening to

I find rap in foreign languages to be more appealing to me than when it's in English. Don't really know why. Maybe I just enjoy the rhythmic way rap goes about it's business.

Can we have a poll that lets us say that we don't like it without making us sound like morons?
LOL

But then that wouldn't be true.

:)

(just kidding)

Gangsta rap really ruined it for me. While I actually think Body Count is kinda good, I hate what they did to the genre as a whole. A lot of the rap made after that - mainstream or not - is trying to live up to what is basically loser ideals and a lot of stupid kids imitate it.

It can be fun, although it can also get repetitive. The lyrics are really the main show (unless you plan to include more than one or two background riffs), and some have done it well.

Personally, MC Hammer wasn't too bad. The only one I could really relate to though, is "White and Nerdy".

I like some of it. Mostly stuff by Eminem and Flobots but i only like the songs with a meaning not just "Oh i backhanded by ho and then rode around in my pimped out Civic!". Because the only reason that i like some rap is because it tells a beatiful story or gives a nice message and if it wasn't for that it's just a man shouting about hos and being a sexist bastard down a mic.
