Never seen the Calvin and Hobbes thing, but Vincent and the Doctor had me going. Damn, I love that episode.

Ouch, you just stabbed my inner child to death.

There are times when it is justified. The death of a parent, sibling, child or significant other are times that spring to mind.

However crying 'about their feelings' is emo-territory. And thus a no go.

Depends, are they crying because their dog died, or because they're watching Twilight?
Well that's the thing, i haven't cried in years, i didn't even cry at my uncles funeral, but, if my dog died, i'd be balling my eyes out.

I prefer the little raccoon story myself, where Calvin finds a dying raccoon and has to face the reality of mortality. In the last strip he talks about how we all have to go eventually, but then he turns to Hobbes and says "...but don't YOU go anywhere." Cue tiger hug and tears.

I believe that it is an ideal worth striving for though that being said it is something that may never be truly achieved. For those that don't think its worth it think if a person is grieving who is better able to comfort them the person balling their eyes out or the person that can be the rock of emotional support they might need.

Real men can cry whenever they want provided they have a good reason. Manly men on the other hand may think otherwise.

Obnoxious douchebags don't cry because they think others will think less of them. Real men cry because they don't care what others think.

Real men do cry, because it shows you got some depth to your personality. Otherwise you are just a testosterone filled brute.
Some small study said that smaller men are more likely to cry and are more in touch with their emotions and men with big muscles and general physical strength tend to have more testosterone, bigger egos and less emotions...
And crying is good for you, when you let your negative emotions out , Ex. Sorrow and sadness. They wont turn to hate and Rage later on.
I cry alot, I admit it, and I have NEVER hit anyone nor gotten in to physical fight.

It comes down to what is a 'real man'.

Since this has no firm meaning, this question doesn't make sense.

It's my party and I'll cry if I want to, seems to be the ongoing theme.

Other.

Men should only cry in situations of great joy (birth of a child), great sadness (loss of a parent), or in only the most immense physical pain (and no sobbing). Your "possibly" option doesn't do it for me, I want to give a very specific answer.

I'm a man and I dont cry. I dont believe in the "real men dont cry" motif, a person can cry and they are no less a person than I.

But in a general sense there is a difference between crying and crying too much, too much crying is a problem for everyone and themselves, man, women, child, it doesnt matter.

On a completely different note, I didnt cry in Toy Story 3 or Gran Torino or even UP so maybe I dont have a soul but it doent make me less of a Homo sapien.

Although men are allowed to cry, some of them take it way too far and cry about every little thing..

But at funerals and births, such major events, its ok to cry..
Then there is the discussion if tears of joy is the same thing as crying..

Depends. Are they watching Twilight because they want to, or because they've been forced to? I'd break down if that tripe was forced upon me.

There was once a boy at my school who would cry if he didn't like what school served us for lunch or if he didn't want to do work. I don't even know girls who do that sort of thing.
Crying is fine, if everything goes to shit for me I'd be crying my heart out for hours so I expect men to do the same. Crying in front of a group of people, I'd guess would be because of the straw that broke the camels back.
It's good to have one friend there who can pat you on the shoulder and make you feel better.
