It should stop when people start considering a game's realism more important than how fun it is. (Although, I'm not entirely convinced this hasn't already happened.)

I don't particularly want a game in which our characters have to sleep for eight hours, eat three times a day and regularly visit the bathroom.

I especially don't want to imagine the quicktime events that are bound to come with the latter...

real is good. I mean it has to stop at a certain point. Would you want to exactly relive Vietnam? no. You don't want to glorify war more then it already is. Real to a point is good but it being a game, NOT REAL, is what's part of it's appeal. If you went all real then you might as well produce a game called "work" and you play it virtually to bore down your life to absolute grayness. Real is great but a game should be taken only so far

Do you mean realism or writing? There is a difference.

A game doesn't have to be realistic at all, but good writing, characterization, etc is always a plus.

I like realism in gaming, a lot actually, but if i was to put 5/5, I would have to sacrifice the fantasy element in videogames, which to me is the most entertaining part. So 3/5 for me.

Don't put realism into games. We play games to escape reality and have fun for damn's sake.
Realism has in the game itself, not the characters and such. Sure the characters/writing can be "realistic" but if you sacrifice the fun for realism, then that game is simply not worth playing.
What I'm trying to say here is this: Make each game fun, no matter what you need to do with that game in order to be fun. You need to sacrifice realism for fun? Do it!

I'd say 3/5 or 2/5, I don't want to go down after a single shot to the head, and I want to be able to atleast have a chance at killing the guy that snuck up behind me before I wind up dead.

I don't really care how realistic games are. The reason people play video games is because they want to do things that they can't do in real life, so sometimes I want a realistic shooter and sometimes I want Psychonauts.

Now my question is, how far should realism and (less importantly) character development go?
It should go up until it stops being fun. There is should stop. An argument can be made that we've already crossed that threshold.

Both are good.
Games, though, should go all the way if they boast realism.

Otherwise, Psychonaughts.

Your allies really do need to be characterized. I don't care if I'm fighting magic-wielding aliens, I care if my reason for not shooting a npc character is "he has the same armour as you".

Oh look they rendered each grain of sand.
5/5, Realism should be paramount in gaming, It's not all graphics.

I don't like too much realism, because who wants to play a game which feels like real life? Real life's just outside the door, it's the thing I've been trying to escape from for the last 8 years, why would I want games to be like it?

I say 3/5. While I like realism, no game needs to be real. That would be boring, and frustrating. Games need a healthy balance of realism and over the top shit.
