I understand why you're rather displeased about this but honestly, I just made this to poke fun at cliches in RPGs, they're a pet peeve of mine.

When you start off a game (usually in MMORPGs) and the things your fighting aren't enough to make you think "I'm Awesome!" and not menial enough to give you the "working-yourself-up-from-the-bottom" feeling. It happens every time and annoys me to no end. It might not be that major to most people, but I notice it every damn time.

There's the chosen one of destiny and then there's the arbitrarily chosen. How come whenever there's massive evil afoot, everyone always place all their faith in just one guy? "Only you can stop this evil now.". Oh really? How come? Wouldn't it be much more effective to send in an army to stop this evil, strength in numbers? And if the fate of the world depends solely on me, then why don't you give me the resources I need to complete the quest? Seriously, nine times out of ten, whoever gives me the world saving quest is royalty. Even if he does not wish to dispatch his army to deal with the evil or protect me, he could atleast give me enough money and equipment for me to be set for my quest.

And stock characters annoy me. You'd think since I'm going to spend 40 hours or more playing with these guys that they could atleast be interesting. No dice, often there's one or two characters with any character development and the rest are one dimensional, like a single person who has divided parts of his personality into several characters.

The biggest problem I have with JRPGs is the way that characters never, ever look any different, no matter what armor you put on them. If I put mithril platemail on my character, he should be wearing mithril platemail, not the same multicolored shirt/pants (s)he has been wearing since the beginning of the game. Sometimes weapons have the same cloning issues, but not as often as armor.

I don't mind clichés as long as they are used well. For instance, memory loss is very cliché, but Torment did it well and made it an integral part of the game instead of just a gimmick.

I have to agree with that, to me, combat means "kill your enemies without discretion" not "sit around taking turns like children"
I happen to enjoy that style of combat at times. Thank you very much!

The only RPG cliche that really gets on my nerves is the main character(s) being ansgty. I just can't relate to them at all, and they annoy me with their constant whining. That's why I prefer another RPG cliche: The main character not speaking at all.

Either that, or have the main character be light-hearted and jovial.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed KOTOR combat, I just don't like that the devs are trying to make it seem like combat is a nice thing where mortal enemies "take turns" hitting each other with swords that, despite their appearances, are duller than butter knives.

Not so big now but for a while it was rather omnipresent.

If there is a religion like the catholic church in the game, you can bet your ass they're up to something evil. If there is a contrasting nature based religion, they will be the good guys.

The thief series, while not RPGs, handled this in a manner I'd like to see more often, that no side is entirely good or evil.

It's not a story cliche but it happens in every RPG. Sleep = Cure for cancer. Seriosly if you have a problem in any RPG you can just sleep it off, if you took a bedroll with you; you would be immortal.

I can't say that I want to destroy any cliches, because all of them have the potential to be used in ways that work very well.

You know now that I think about it Mass Effect handled the whole idea of your group not having the support of an entire army rather well. Your character was a member of a group of black operators that answered directly to the ruling council. I wish that was used more often. As for cliches I want to destroy I would have to go with the over use of swords to the detriment of any other kind of weapon. I understand that swords have existed long enough to have magical qualities attributed to them but seriously there are other weapons out there. Oh and let us not forget the idea that every fantasy RPG has to be a LOTR ripoff in terms of setting.

That's endemic to the whole fantasy genre though, in books and movies as well as games. It can be done well: Warhammer is basically an elaborate rip-off of/homage to Lord of the Rings, but with enough backbone to make you forget. For better or worse, it's bigger than Tolkien now. Besides, LOTR wasn't totally original: he took a lot of existing mythology and made it badass. Elves have been around a hell of a lot longer than the past 60 years - Tolkien was just the first to make it really seem like they could cut your face off.
