I'm currently loving Fallout:NV. I am anxiously waiting to finally be able to play Mass Effect 2, since I have a PS3, and Dragon Age 2. I'm also gonna check out DC Universe Online, did that Beta key dealy with the preorder, kinda curious about it.

That's pretty hard, series are generally rather inconsistent the whole way through. I like Morrowind a lot, but don't think Oblivion is that good for instance. Also, Morrowind's aged and while it was fantastic then, a lot of hardly comes up to par with something like Mass Effect 2.

Nonetheless, if we're going for vanilla games I'd say it's split even between Morrowind and the Witcher (hopefully the Witcher series will continue on as good as the first one).

If we can consider game mods though, the first Neverwinter Nights, all the way =)

It is funny, I'm not a Star Wars Fan but KOTOR games are pretty up there, just because both were good games and the second one even with being unfinished had some very cool writing, and Kreia seemed to hate Star Wars more than I ever could, heh.

Fallout games are good as well. Loved the first 2 Fallouts. Three wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be (I found Morrowind boring and didn't play Oblivion until very recently and found it boring as well.) Fallout New Vegas is sweet, not quite as good as the first two but still rather fun, and maybe the best RPG in a sense to ever come out for a console (not my favorite RPG game that is out for a console... Two different things. I mean KOTOR II is better game to me but not as good of an RPG. To me the best RPGS would be like Arcanum, Fallout 2, even if I found one of those kind of games boring. ) But it seems that the Fallout games did have one really bad game that came out only for consoles that i never bothered playing. Never played Tactics.

Quest for Glory games were awesome puzzle solving RPGs, that even though they had the same practice an individual skill until you get better at it like the Elderscroll games which I find to get very repetitive, I still enjoyed them a lot. For people who didn't play PC games in the early 90s think of an action rpg combined with a Monkey Island/sam and max style game.

But come to think of it most of my favorite western RPGs probably were not part of a series or a sequel hasn't come out yet. Can't even think of a great JRPG Series, most of them even the ones I like have some very bad games in their series.

Out of the ones listed in the poll, Mass Effect. Something a bit atypical and awesome about that game. My favourite RPG is probably KOTOR, though. Also quite a fan of the Fallout series and the Diablo games.

Dungeon Siege? I don't consider that an RPG. I don't know anything about the new one, but the first one was mediocre enough I'm not going to try a sequel. I can't say it is truly bad, just nothing special.

To me, an RPG needs to focus more on character development, or give the player the freedom to build their own character's personality. Games like dungeon siege and Diablo don't require a personality; you're just a dude that runs around killing monsters. I'm not saying that's necessarily a bad game, it just isn't an RPG by my measure.

That said, Deus Ex and KotoR 2 are a couple of my favorites, mainly because of the heavy character development involved, and the fact that much of that development depends on decisions by the player. The Fallout series I've also liked (though Tactics pretty much falls into the same category as Diablo and Dungeon Siege), particularly since the character is a blank slate handed to the player to fill in and characterize, while the game focuses more on exploration.

I would have, until very recently said Mass Effect nowadays though I gotta say Persona 4, that game is /astonishing/. The chracters are incredibly well designed and after playing for a while I genuinely cared about what happened to each and every one of them...except Yusuke, he just got more and more annoying, I wish he had more growth, everyone else does.

Series huh? While it was totally pants, there was another Vampire the Masquerade game, and no matter how shit it was Bloodlines more than made up for it. So lets say VtM, which is weird because I freaking hated the pen and paper game. Of course Planescape: Torment is probably the best RPG of all time, and will likely remain so for the foreseeable future.

I realize I have missed alot of favourites and im sorry about that but I didnt really like dragon age:eek:rigins all that much. It was a fun game but my friend kidnapped it before I could get a full experience out of it. I really can say though that Elder Scrolls have been my favourite RPG thus far. Im still waiting eagerly for that news on the next one but bethesda is working on getting a few more games out probably before they work on Elder Scrolls more. If Elder Scrolls 5 follows suit of Morrowind that will make me so happy I mean that game defined immersion to me.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I forgot to mention the Witcher! I cant wait for the second one to come out. As for all the people that liked the older games but didnt like what modern gaming did to some of the series' I can totally sympathize. Take Neverwinter Nights for example, I loved the first ones engine and could get over all the other problems in the game but the second one was transformed to much into a WoW like game. Dont get me wrong I have spent roughly a half of a year in game in WoW and its a fun game to an extent but for the purpose of this being an RPG thread I didnt really want to mention it.

I gotta go with the Mass Effect series. Easily my favorite RPG of all time with some of the most compelling digital characters in the business. And, with Mass Effect 2, the combat is almost comparable to Gears of War. Can't ask for much more, in my books.

As the rest are kind of samey and I have a healthy disinterest in all of Fallout. (I just find them boring, your choices are stupid, and every damn thing is buggy.) I'd have to go with Mass Effect, though I like Disgaea, Star Ocean, old Atlus JRPGs, and a a handful of Final Fantasy.

Blahdeddy blerg.

My favorite is Mass Effect. I really enjoy stepping into the role of Commander Shepard. It's an incredibly immersive experience.
Mass Effect is hardly an RPG at all! It waters down the Role Playing Elements and focuses too much on the gun fighting action.

OT: Mine is Mass Effect, I'm a huge fan of it.

For WRPGs I would go with Elder Scrolls but if we are talking about JRPGs too then either the Tales series (simply because I love Tales of Symphonia) or Golden Sun (because both games were awesome).

I love Oblivion and would choose that without hesitation, except you said series... I have yet to play any Elder Scrolls game that isn't Oblivion, whereas I love both Mass Effect games to death. The second is in contention for my favorite game of all time and I have yet to mine it dry, still. So, in the end I chose Mass Effect and mention Elder Scrolls.
