The RTS genre never really got me. I enjoy being in the thick of the action rather than overseeing it, but that's just me.

Has some potential, but I think that all games that are being released right now look really similar with their "OMGAWESOME" 3-D graphics engine. Although it does feel nice to destroy a building and actually SEE each individual block fall, it stops becoming awesome when every other modern RTS title starts using the same thing.
Another thing is that ever since the best RTS came out 11 years ago (Starcraft), all the RTS games out there feature "WOW3UNIQUERACESLOL" but all the races are too similar. They all have a gun toting basic unit, they all have similar tanks. They only have slight variations on this, like maybe the cost of units for different factions are different or maybe the superunit of each faction is different.

I still play Starcraft from time to time, I think it's the most balanced and stable RTS out there (they had 11 years to patch the thing). Blizzard put a lot of time and effort into making the game, and the graphics aren't horrible. I liked what they did with the microing aspect of the game, giving each unit the power to change the tide of war because of leet skills on the player's part. And the different races are COMPLETELY different from each other, unique and strange in their own way. I liked that.

That reminds me, modern games also seem to have an obsession with the whole "LOOKOVER9000UNITSLOL" and they try their best to advertise their game as epic. This is fun, yes, but it sometimes feels like I'm just grinding out units on a production line to send them to their deaths, only occasionally changing the angle or area of attack. Whoopdeedo.
The microing aspect of the game is gone or toned down. No longer can a single unit do an epic move to change the course of war. No longer can each unit be precious to the commander to the point of giving them names. Who cares about the tiny things, you have billions of them, they'll die anyway, preserving their life is useless, HURRDURR.

And another thing in the current RTS genre is that developers are acting if they have hit on some WINNINGFORMULALOL and repeatedly applying the formula to every one of their games. Each and every game they make is doomed to have many units, similar units, etc.

Whatever, RTS gaming is becoming too similar and not diverse enough. I've given up caring.

Hearts of Iron 3 if you feel like BIG scale strategy, Dawn of war is a bit inbetween regular RTS'es and Company of Heroes, halfway in between I'd say.

You should at least check out Hearts of Iron 3 (and disregard most user reviews..)

The beta seemed kinda cool (a more dynamic version of DoW1) but not warranting a buy in my opinion, that said I didn't like Dawn of War 1 that much either.

On a scale I'd put it like this

1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10

1 is Red alert 2, build 100 kirovs and you win no matter what.
5 is Dawn of War, you can still win by building tons of vehicles but there are more effective counters
6.5 is Dawn of War 2 (as far as I've played it), you need to use abilities and have a varied army to win (unless you build those big ish tyranids, the siege things I think. They kill anything)
8 is Company of Heroes, If the enemy uses his environment to his advantage you really need a varied army. Unless ofcourse you have a big amount of artillery at your disposal :)
10 is Hearts of Iron 3, I've never seen that much strategy needed in a game

Hmm, I wouldn't know what to put... I'm not a massive fan of RTS and used to think it was quite nerdy seeing that you have to have a tactical way of attacking and takes ages to play a game.

Now that I have AoE I'm spending like 4 - 6 hours a day, on days that I cba, on it playing about 3 games with my boyfriend.

I beat him for the first time yesterday :') He was so proud especially since me and his friend called it a tie because it was taking too long.

Haven't played any others really apart from Halo Wars but thats naf, personally RTS is one of those genres that I could only play on PC.

Btw, you spelt bother wrong on the poll...

Glad I could be of service :p (I pirated it since I can't wait for the (overseas) delivery to arrive wednesday >.> but it seems cool so far if you don't count the patch fixable stuff. One game can easily take over 40 hours if not more :D)

I find only one problem with RTS's in general. They're not so much Real Time Strategy as they are Real Time SteamRoll simulator. The only successful combat strategy is to mass up a huge army and just level everything in one wave. They've whored out every drop of strategy for more and more gimmicks like superpowers for each unit or a diverse unit selection. The only Strategy game i play now is Advance Wars and its not real time.

i have played many before and will continue to do so but i have some comments to chuck in here
1)Unit Caps...make them map decided eg. supreme commander FA i think in 81kmx81km map i can fit more than possibly 8000 units
2)weapon damage is usally way off but otherwise games would suck horribly so that one can slide
3)i lose to build craptacular load of unit and throw at enemy. why can't players use tactics? or at least not call me cheat and boot me off of games when i use a pincer manouvere or deep strike
4) squad tactic games (DOW) should have garrisonable terrian and destruible terrian. dawn of war 2 did this but screwed gameplay up
5)can we have Starcraft 2 yet? Please blizzard??????? well i kinda want starcraft 2 just because theres nothing else comming soon?

now some good things
1)there usauly is alot of comm talk between teamates so it makes for a better game
2)TRAITORS are killed off with alot more gusto
3)awesome friendships are made
4)patchs fix problems instead of creating them
5)resource collection adds another stragey level(Land, Air, Sea, Economy and sometimes space)
tip. the crippling blow is when you cut off resource gathering abilities. The you can starve them or finish them with less resistance and they won't recover nearly as easily

and a cold hard fact: I introduced my wife to dow...she plays as the necrons and within 13.23 minutes of a games start can have a monolith and full army up and running. She can beat off rushes as soon as 1 minute...it's terrifying

RTS gaming seems to have died down, a lot.

My personal favourites are Populous: The Beginning, CnC: Red Alert 2 and Dawn of War: Dark Crusade.

I think too many people have tried reviving it in new ways, and while I think Dawn of War 2 was onto something, it's not really the same genre.

Starcraft/Warcraft games stopped being made way back when, and the CnC games stopped being good after Generals. Since then, the market has been rather generic or pretentious.

CnC 3 was terrible, CnC: Red Alert 3 was terrible, Halo Wars was one of the worst RTS games ever made, and Company of Heroes was average.

I'm hoping Starcraft 2 pumps some much-needed life into the genre.
