It is very average, but with a couple changes it could be the best MMORPG ever. First, take out the grinding. There you go, it's the best.
And yes, at this moment I think WoW is better. But not by much. At all. Couple more updates and Runescape will have the same level of play as WoW, taking into consideration the cost (WoW is 3 times the cost, only if you choose to pay for extra benefits in RS)

I like the fact the pool options have "was" in it, because it WAS decent.
To stop real life trading Jagex put an awful trade system (which limits the amount of gold or item value I'm trading Versus the item value or gold being traded by the other player. This makes players unable to create their own balanced economy. It was meant to protect newbies and stop people from selling runescape gold for real life money.

Like that wasn't enough they decided to screw up some more. Jagex took PVP away from a free space and put PVP in a closed space and filled the open space with some invencible god-like ghosts. Now you either get killed by the ghosts and lose your items or get killed right as you enter the PVP area by max level campers at the entrance and lose your items. I MEAN SERIOUSLY, COME ON. There has to be a chance of failure or sucess and must offer fun. That is the basic essence of gaming, is it not? Now a level 70 has no sucess rate? I must really suck at runescape.
The essence of runescape was in addictive and interesting skills and PvP.
You would alternate from the two. Every once in a while visit the wilderness and try your best to survive by using the best of your skills.
My big inspiriation to play runescape was the wilderness. It made my heart beat fast.
In fact, the day they took the wilderness away is considered the day that runescape died.
I only hope I might find a game which makes my heart beat again.
(Incase there was some PVP update or something its not that I know.)
They removed the wilderness, that alone made me and my friends stay away from it like it had STD's.

This is my opinion (though I perhaps generalised a bit on my comment about the community) and I am allowed to express it.
In truth I actually voted for the 'It was OK' option, as I sometimes go back to an account I made years ago and I do enjoy it when I play. I simply chose the most significant factors that keep me from playing regularly, and posted them here.
Because there is no reason for it to? Very few games deserve such treatment, and since Runescape was a lot better than people make it out to be, Runescape is definitely not within the range of the few games that shouldn't exist.Zeeky_Santos said:

It was better than doing nothing in my 7th grade typing class on the days I forgot my flash drive with WC3, Starcraft, and Diablo II
It's not a BAD game it's just not a GOOD game either.
The character creation, combat, trading, people who play it, quests and the fact 3/4 of the world are locked off until you pay for it are the main reasons that it's not a good game.
Good things about it though are the magic system, it's unique and it actually works besides almost costing an arm and a leg to get working. Everything else in it is pretty much average, mining system is just you standing there beating up a rock with a pickaxe, wood cutting and fire making seem ridiculous but they're good for making money (apparently. I couldn't be assed leveling them that high)
I stopped playing it ages ago though, and I'd rather not come back to it until they fix the 50% of the game that they fucked up. Not only that but you get the runeplate and then you've already seen everything the game has to offer, I don't even know why membership exists.

When I read the words RuneScape, I cringed. I didn't vote in the poll because nothing said "Worst piece of shit ever put on this planet".
Its good, FOR A JAVA GAME. I consider CoD2 better since RS has crap updates, takes FAR too long to level up without killing part of your life and the limits on it are going overboard.

It was a good game but on if you were a member they loved to just kick the non-members down all the time reminding them that they had it so tough!!! LOL!
That pretty much sums up why I only played it for a few weeks. Plus, you know when you're getting bored of the game when your favourite thing is to stand in a bank, declare you have free adamant and then say 'lol not really' and run away when someone tries to trade, as the shouts of "NOOB" echo in the distance.tharwen said:

Runescape's system was great, and put a lot more thought into it than people give it credit for. Especially since the membership cost was one of the common bad things about it. You pay for most of your games, so a $5-per-month game wasn't that bad for a game that could be endlessly continued. You didn't need the membership until later levels anyhow, so before that, it was free. And for a free game, it's a lot of bang for your buck.
A person explained to me that one of the reasons Runescape had done so poorly was that it lacked in graphics, or what he called "Distracting Bias". When a game looks good, you are less likely to notice the bad qualities in a game; sort of like hiding the hole in a wall by putting up a pretty picture in front of it. When something doesn't look good, people don't think it IS good, whether they consiously agree or not.
I could name games that were so much worse than Runescape, and that actually required you to pay for it. Sure, Runescape was nowhere near the best game ever, but it certainly wasn't the worst game ever. And far from worst.
EDIT: And don't take this angrily, please. I'm no raging fanboy. I'm only trying to erase some of the floating hatred of the game.
