I think rushing crosses the border of a game being recreational and an absolute time-waster sport. I hate it too. Not because I sucked, but because I changed my gaming habits into means to chill in the evening.

Congrats, OP has an opinion. He dislikes the rush tactics because it ruins the feeling of 'elegance' he sees in the game.

You dislike an aspect of game. The developers included the ability to rush, so maybe your rage should turn to them.

It seems a bit boring and stupid to me, a game is far more interesting and enjoyable if both sides field a variety of different units.

So what you're saying is you don't like this strategy because it's simpler and "barbaric"? Well, bully for you. No offense. But hey, sometimes simple strategies are the best. I for one don't use the strategy, because I agree it's too risky, but I don't care if someone uses it. It's just as valid as my usual strategy (i.e. Build up defenses, amass an army, storm across the map with it). I should mention I haven't played Starcraft, but C&C and AoE I am very fond of... And I have seen rushing, I've been defeated by it, and I've countered it.
In short, it's a valid strategy, and to me it just seems you're complaining cause you get beaten by it.

I've hated it all my life and only recently I've decided to do the more extreme choices during RTS play. Even though I hate to say it, rushing works. It shouldn't work because it ruins a whole match of game experience.
It's the Indiana Jones aspect, why fight him when you can simply shoot him and be done? Now we're not REALLY fighting for our lives and we're not REALLY being chased by bad guys. So what most people want is not to specifically win in any way possible, but to actually play the game.
To suck out it's art, it's dialogue or mechanics.

Imagine playing X-Com Enemy Unknown and the aliens decide to roll out fifteen Battleships onto your base. If the goal is to win in any way, why shouldn't the AI do it? But it doesn't, it's goal is to make you have fun.

So I dislike rushing, it's not how it was meant to be played.

It works 9/10 times, you can't argue with logic.

I love doing it on Dawn of War with an endless stream of Howling Banshees

Believe it or not, you can rush in pretty much any multiplayer game. Happens in DDO a lot. Whether I rush depends on what character I'm playing. If I'm playing my Paladin, then I do rush because I know I can crush literally everything. If I'm using my Wizard, then I hang back and provide buffs and artilary support. If I'm playing my Ranger, I scout ahead because my Spot, Listen, Hide and Move Silently skills put Rogues to shame.

I hate warthog rushers, they are just so hard to beat because of how fast they can reinforce and how powerful they can be.

I'm indifferent, but rushing is a legitimate strategy, even though it's kinda annoying. However, if you're a good player, you can counter it, and it's very funny and exciting to witness it in a pro-match, like Jaedong doing a 4-pool Zergling rush against Flash (in Starcraft, if you're wondering), it was awesome.

Explanation of the 4-Pool Zergling Rush:
In Starcraft Skirmish matches you start with 4 of your workers (Drones, SCVs or Probes) and your main building (Hatchery, Command Center or Nexus), ordinarily players gather minerals and build workers, the amount of workers depending on the strategy you want to be using during the match.

Normally Zerg spawn 9 or 10 Drones before building their next building, which is ordinarily either a Spawning Pool, or a second Hatchery. The Terran build 10 SCVs and while the 11th SCV is building they build either a Supply Depot, or a Barracks. The Protoss usually build 10 Probes, then a Pylon and then either a Gateway, or a Forge if they're looking to Fast Expand.

Now to the topic at hand the 4-Pool Zerg rush. A normal Zerg rush is a 9-pool rush, which means spawning 9 Drones, then building a Spawning Pool and then spawning the Zerglings. A 4-Pool is more crazy because you don't spawn any Drones, you just gather minerals with the Drones you have at the start, until you gather 200 Minerals and build your Spawning Pool. This is my favourite kind of rush because it's very rarely used today, and it's very interesting to see someone use it.

tl;dr: I like rushes because they're very fun to witness when utilized properly, and it's fun to see the victim struggling to counter.

I don't like rushing. I like harassing though. But I don't blame or rage at players for doing it, it's their tactic let them play as they see fit no need to tell them to learn to play because they have, in their own way. I've been called "noob", "sob" etc etc (I even saved that replay) just because I nuked the shit out of his base... Basically what I see is, if someone wins the game through a method you don't like they need to learn to play? I'm not talking about the OP I'm talking in general. My answer to all is, you learn to play, to react and to counter I don't mind loosing to any kind of tactic, SC2 is great in that even loosing is a learning experience.

I hate rushing, mostly because I was never any good at it. I used to play with someone who excelled at Starcraft. He had his keyboard mapped, he knew every map, every unit down to how fast they could move so he could time everything to the split second. He could rush anything. Zerglings in one minute, marines in three minutes, zealots in four minutes.

36 carriers in ten minutes
I stopped playing with him. There was absolutely no chance of beating him. Ever.

Not possible. Literally.

It took 80 seconds to build a spawning pool in Starcraft/BW, which you couldn't even do right away without mining with your initial workers for at least 30 seconds.

It takes 65 seconds in SCII to build a spawning pool, again needing to mine with the initial workers.

I'm not gonna run the numbers, but I'm fairly sure marines in 3 minutes is impossible as well, though zealots in 4 seems reasonable, though you would probably only have 1 or two at the expense of any semblance of an economy.

36 carriers in 10 is definately impossible on anything that is not a Fastest map, even then I doubt it.
It is possible, and it was done on a fastest map on the fastest speed. It was the only map he played. Anything else and he wouldn't bother with the game.

What was even more annoying though as protoss were cannon rushes. He barricaded you in your base, and while you were trying to fight your way out he was filling the rest of the ENTIRE FUCKING MAP with cannons.

Edit: And that's 1000 posts! w00t!

For me it depends. If I'm rushing due to my own fault then I get really frustrated. 'If you'd not watched that news report you'd be on time dumbass' for example.
If it's someone else then I just ride with it. 'We're sorry but the train is going to be stuck here for at least another 30 minutes...' for example.

EDIT: Hahahahaha, RTFQ DUMBASS! I'll keep it up though :p

I dislike rushing. I dislike facing it, and I dislike using it. I can't really say "it's bad" without qualification, mostly because I don't generally care for multiplayer anyway (I think mostly because I'm bad at it) and I really have no business telling other people how to play.

My main problem with rushing (aside from not having figured out whatever "magic formula" there is for countering it) is aesthetics. I've got this whole tech tree here, but if I spend any amount of time or resources on it then I will lose. It feels... wasteful, maybe?

Anywho, that's just me. Y'all folks do your multiplayer however you like.

Legitimate tactic or not I usually find it annoying. In 3v3 or 4v4 comp-stomps a pair of my buddies that like to rush regularly end up costing us the game by throwing away their economy to support the rush. Though it has been beneficial to me in that I have made my build much stronger to counter the threat.

I do agree that rushing can be a just plain frustrating tactic, but when I use rushes, its not so much that im trying to take advantage of the system, but so that I can see swarms of minions biting the dust, while still overwhelming the target through sheer weight of numbers. Its highly entertaining

I hate rushing in RTSs (except in the Total War series, where it is an actual acceptable strategy). I remember in the console version of Battle For Middle Earth though when everyone would agree to a "no rushing for 15 minutes" rule.

Rushing is a perfectly acceptable option. It can win the game or lose the game, just like any other tactic. Because I've yet to see a game where rushing is not in some significant way a trade-off in resources or later stability or late-game viability. Its a strategy with pro's con's and it can typically be countered by a competent player, so it seems balanced.

Well, it's part of the game, so whining about it is basically a waste of time, cause it's not like people are gonna play by a set of made-up rules, cause you dislike the strategy they're using.

When it's done on me I'm always unprepared and get overran, and when I try to do it there's some kind of universal law in effect around me so that it always fails...

That's why I don't usually play online...
