I haven't read the posts so far but this should be a quick post, apologies if I'm repeating stuff.
Get Metro 2033 on a console, cause for me at least it's the laggiest game I've got. Not even with the best graphics or anything, it's just slower than all others.
Haven't played the others, but S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is great. Either Shadow of Chernobyl or Call of Pripyat.
You must be aware that they're part RPG, of course. No stats, but there are some dialogues, optional quests and a lot of equipment. And free exploration instead of linear levels - that's actually the best part of the game. The zone is creeeepy.
And best not call it Russian or Soviet. It's like calling a Scotsman English - it's inaccurate, and might cause a less than enthusiastic reaction.
red orchestra! hands down the best and most realistic shooter (modded arma2 aside maybe...and sorry, console boys^^) you will play in a very, VERY long time.
I have been craving a Russian (or Russian-themed) FPS for some time now, and the only other title that best matches that description is The Void, and that's more of an RPG. Which title would you recommend, or had the best experience(s) in? And in case the poll does not show up, here's what I'm thinking of buying:
Stalker: Clear Sky
Stalker: Call of Pripyat
Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl
Metro 2033
Red Orchestra
Other
I'd advise going for a Stalker game because they are really good and not that expensive on Steam; probably best to go for Call of Pripyat because its the easiest to start with and get used to the controls (although note that it has a few features the earlier games don't), albeit it doesn't give you any form of tutorial, so you have to work out the controls by looking at the key options or trial and error. Shadow of Chernobyl is actually pretty challenging(I found anyway), even on the easiest setting, mainly because good stuff is simply not forthcoming early on and some of the enemies you meet near the beginning kill you pretty fast. Can't really comment on the others as I haven't really played them.
If you're up for a challenge; Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl (probably get the Stalker complete 2009 mod; never used it, but it seems highly recommended) and crank the difficulty up to highest.
If you're just wanting the experience; Stalker: Call of Pripyat on normal should suffice to feed the craving.
I'd advise for maximum "Russianness" to find a mod for Stalker than changes all voices to Russian; otherwise there are some story and side-mission-connected characters who you'll likely find a bit grating.
Uncle Yar: What's up bro!!!!!!
*cringe*
Every, Single. Time. -.-
Get all the Stalkers and Metro.
As much as metro annoyed me with badly placed checkpoints in the sneak level, it was a good game.
I've also almost poured 200 hours into the stalkers, so its well worth it, I'd even recommend the runt of the pack CS, just for the atmosphere and when the faction wars system works (which is quite rarely) its incredible.
Out of all these games I can see how Metro 2033 is voted for the most. As for me, I prefer Clear Sky. Metro 2033 was a good game, but I prefer open environments with lots of things to do.
It was the first STALKER to incorporate a living environment with a tug-of-war between two factions. This gave the game more gameplay as you assisted or helped fight a faction. Hell, you could skip it all together and move through the storyline but that defeats the purpose. It was also the first STALKER that allowed you to mod your own guns and also repair them.
I rather liked Metro 2033. It is very immersive and has a strong story. The combat can seem a little buggy at times but I found the game to be worthwhile overall.
all of the above
if your finances are limited try to pick up all the stalker games in a pack. they are all equally good with clear sky being a little more buggy than the rest
oh and gsc game world(the guys who made stalker) are Ukrainian, not Russian
I'm glad others know of his awesomeness....
Red Orchestra if you are looking for a multiplayer, they are coming out with the second installment soon, it's an awesome game, a little tough to get into starting out, but, it's a very good shooter, the 3ID server is pretty good on there, you would need the darkest hour which is free btw to play there.
Tripwire is pretty awesome about giving out free map packs, seriously please support them, they are awesome enough to deserve your business.
Does Singularity count as Russian themed? Pretty sure most of the menus were written in the Russian language until you highlighted their options and such.
You completely missed the point of this thread. This isn't about games that contain gibberish Cyrillic characters or communist caricatures but about games developed (or published in RO's case)by eastern european studios.
Step 1. Buy Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl
Step 2. Download the Oblivion Lost mod
Step 3. Lose track of time exploring the zone and emerge to reality several months later
metro 2033 , singularity are very good games as far as Im concerned
I would play the stalker games but Ive never had anything close to a decent pc gaming rig cant say I like fps games on pc. (or any game really)
the keyboard and mouse are just uncomfortable for me very unintuitive actually hurts after a little while.
