Elementalism. There are SO many things that fall under that school, and you become super versatile/badass if you can control all of them.
But the way you use Elementalism is limited.
You can't use wind in a manner that will allow you flight, it'd tear you to shreads.
Damn. But even with limitations like that, the uses for it are still vast. The "turning water to ice" ability alone has an enormous amount of uses. Mostly resulting in the death of your opposition.

But if that is out of the question, I'd go with telekinesis. Basically accomplishes many of the same things.

I want to be a shadow mage who uses the shadow to move quickly from one place to another, make it look like teleportation.

Illusion is also always a fun one.
I might add Illusion in the poll, you're the third person to notice it.

illusion =] it should be there! the ability to trick people into thinking your near death and harming themself while they try to finish you off =D also by creating visions of other people for the enemy to attack (who infact can do nothing) while you youself can slowly harm with them as you please without them even realising =] this school becomes almost as versetile as teleportation due to the fact that, to youre foe, you seem to be teleporting/not where he thought you were. imo teleportation should be included within illusion magic.

tldr: illusion to make people hit themselfs instead of you while u watch and lol =]

Perhaps some Jedi mind tricks, like the classic "I need to kill myself" one.

Restoration, assuming it also grants me the ability to heal myself, not just others. :p

I've always been attracted to support roles. I play medic in both TF2 and BFBC2 more often than other classes so I'll go with Restoration. Helping people FTW!

There seems to be a problem with my internet.
Does an option for Illusion come up in the poll?

Without a question, I am a Necromancer. (Quick look around the room... My vast skull collection, pile of zombie movies, my zombie survival guide sitting next to my Hellraiser puzzle box... etc etc. etc.) When you fight the army of the dead, you wont just die, you'll join its ranks.

Forgotten School(s): Summoning (more mystical form of being a pokemon trainer)... lol
Alchemy (transfiguration), Divination, Enchantment (who needs social skills when you can MAKE everyone love you.), Illusions,

What the hell is Divination?
Alchemy exists only in the universe of FMA as far as I know of.
Enchantment is a very narrow minded school, you might as well use good rethoric skills.

You 'came up' with these schools of magic?

Maybe you should check out any edition of the D&D Player's Handbook. It's damn near the same thing. As I'm sure there are in any number of similar RPGs and games.

It was the experience of many books, movies, video games and any form of media that led me to this list of schools of magic.

Destruction/Chaos
Make a firey pit beneath my foes then fry them up real good with some lightning then cool off with a huge chunk of ice on their heads. Doesn't get better than that.

if you read it properly OP says basicaly that he/she looked at all the common sources and made this general list based on them

Divination... the Psychic version would be Clairvoyance. The art of seeing beyond using your 5 senses. A great way to spy on people... maybe even see a possible future... or even to check out the past to see what really happened.
Alchemy or Transfiguration. I think was in one of the Harry Potter movies (I think Ron turned his rat into a cup... or something).

Elementalism all the way. It has the most versatility, especially if we're going by the OP's definition (similar to "Avatar the Last Airbender"). Control of air more or less overrules telekinesis, water could arguably include healing properties, multiple forms of transport negate "mere" teleportation, and don't even get me started on how meaningless destruction seems at this point.

Not just the future. Divination is past, present, future, and all the maybe's and could be's in between. If knowledge is power a good seer is god-like.

Back on the topic

7. Illusion - because being a gifted stage magician qualifies you for a free school year in Hogwartz. I wish they had made THAT movie instead of that other series.

Are we making a less then subtle nod at Lev Grossman's The Magicians here?

I myself would like the power of sympathy from The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss

Necromancy.
I want to summon an undead horde, and it will be BRILLIANT.
Oh, and I get to wear pimp-ass robes like this:
