That said, it's very annoying if you go to someone's house and they ask you to remove 'em.
And it's even more annoying when you have guests, and they come waddling in on dirty shoes.
Be polite: shoes off!
Yes sir!
I have seen the error of my ways, I got some apologising to do.

First thing I do is take them off. But, it depends on the house. If my host wishes for me to leave them on, then on they shall stay.

No matter the temperature in my house my feet are bare. If it was socially acceptable I would never wear shoes or socks but most people don't like it when I walk around outside barefoot so I don't have much of a say in the matter.

Depends who's house it is, if it's mine then yes. But if it's someone else's house and there's loads of stuff on the floor that I don't want to walk on then I might just keep my shoes on.

... typing that I just realised how pointless it was even bothering.

I always take them off once I'm in the house. As well as being in other people's homes.

Why would you want to have your shoes on at home? I don't see the sense in that. If it's cold, put some socks on.

Up here in Canada everyone I know of takes their shoes off when they go inside someone's house. That what socks and carpets exist for. Only exceptions are parties as people will steal your shoes.

I leave them on but that's because I'm usually in and out all the time and taking them off would be a pain. If I'm visiting some ones house though I always ask if they want them off, its just a matter of manners.

In Finland, nobody asks you to remove your shoes when you enter their home, it's taken for granted. The only reason not to take your shoes off immediately when you enter a home, is when you're carrying something heavy, or are just popping in to grab something you forgot.

I guess it's because 3/4 of the time it's either snowing or raining, so shoes get muddy and dirty. Shoes are something that protect your feet, there's no point in wearing them in an environment where your feet don't need to be protected.
