Neither. Both are too limited weapons, too specialized. They are good at what they are designed to do, but pretty much suck at everything else. I'd much rather take a modern assault rifle: Attach a scope and you get a gun useful for quasi-sniping purposes when talking of distances of around 800 meters and less. Remove the scope and fold the stock for urban in-house combat. Extend the stock and it becomes a short-and medium distance weapon with great accuracy. Give it a bipod and several magazines and you have an improvised LMG.

Even in games the assault rifle is the king most of the time. And with good reason.

Why would you want anything besides a good old fashioned shotty?

Snipe from a distance? Bah! Only children and cowards do that! Real men (with chest hair) pick up shotguns and run in viking style! Sure, many of you will die but know that your character will feast and battle for all eternity in the halls of Valhalla!

Shotgun for sure. There's noting like being about 10 yards away from someone, dodging around them and unleashing a cartridge full of hot, angry, lead pellets into their face.

You cant experience that when you're camping on the other side of the map looking down a scope. :)

Shotgun, because its not a confirmed kill if the blood doesn't splash your face.

Also, I have short stubby fingers and horrible aim.

I would say sniper in games like Insurgency where the role has to be played properly to be effective.

Any other games, it's SMGs and ARs and pistols for me :D

ARs. I can snipe sorta if it is accurate enough and I can spray an entire area with bullets if people get to close

Fuck guns.
You sound like the sort of guy I enjoy headshotting from the other side of the map. And since when gaming online I usually play Halo Custom Edition, which has a map 6km across (Coldsnap), it's a pretty big deal headshotting over the entire map. I'll have fun killing you...

From that, by the way, my answer should be pretty obvious.

Shotguns. Not the pump action kind though, they are over done. I prefer giving someone both barrels at point blank and sending them across the room (see "Call of Juarez"). I'd like to see more harpoon guns in games as well.

To me, he sounds more like the Spy who backstabs the arrogant, bastard snipers who do nothing but show off, trying to get the long shots and ignoring the needs of the team.

Well I've always enjoyed shotguns, and they certainly have a purpose. At close range with buckshot, the fact that they fire 9 .32 rounds with low penetration they're extremely useful. They'll kill, but collateral damage is kept to a minimum. Even with a slug and rifled barrel they can be extremely useful between 50 and 100 yards. I however prefer a rifle due to the accuracy and range. Anything aside from close quarters I'd take a rifle, iron sights or scope, above a shotgun. Preferably a .308. Were we talking about videogames here?
