Well if you read the subject I'm sure you get the basic idea of what this thread is about. I've been quite content with just my 360 up to now but it seems that the PS3 is finally going to be getting some really good exclusive titles that I want to get my hands on. But I can't seem to decide if it's worth it or not.

First off is the money issue. I'm looking at getting a 40gig HD used PS3 from Gamestop which normally comes to about $350, however, I have a bunch of trade in credit there and could get it for about $140, add $60 for a game and $20 for the HD cables (Correct me if I'm wrong but I was told it doesn't come with those) and it's about $220. This isn't bad considering what it normally costs, but it's still a lot of money to me.

Second is games. Until Little Big Planet comes out (Which I can't wait to get) I'm gonna want something else to play on it, and I can't seem to fine any games out now for the PS3 that seem worthwhile or that I don't already have or have had for 360. Can anyone suggest any games?

Third thing is Blu-ray. I've never actually seen anything in Blu-ray before and I was basically just wondering if it's all it's cracked up to be.

And finally is the backwards compatibility. The 40 gig version doesn't have any, which sort of annoys me because I still have some great PS2 games I'd love to play again. So all in all I'm basically trying to decide if it's worth it.

Anyone have any other pros or cons related to the PS3 that might help me decide?

For my family, Blu-Ray was the deciding factor. A new 40Gig PS3 plus HDMI cables and taxes game to $530 at EBgames, and we payed for three quarters of it with gift cards and certificates.

The games I own for my PS3 are all multiplatform, but I love using it for Blu-Ray movies. I too can't wait for Little Big Planet, and I'm glad I can play Bioshock in a couple of months.

Alright, the first issue I can't help you with. I know PS3s seem like alot of money at first, but they are cheap for what you're getting. But that still makes it seem expensive. But I suggest getting a bundle, look around for some information because even I'm confused as to what bundle holds what and what model does what.

Second. So far, I have Ratchet and Clank Future, Uncharted: Drake's fortune, Resistance Fall of man, Warhawk, and of course Metal Gear Solid 4. So those are some games you can consider.

Thirdly, I watched Pearl Harbor on Blu-ray. IT WAS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FUCKING THING I'VE EVER-EHemem, sorry. It looked beautiful (especially the explosions :D) and I think it is a pretty good deal. And my TVs HD, so i've seen HD videos before the BLu-ray, but it was really beautuful.

Fourthly, i personally don't care to much for backwards compatibility. I'd keep the PS2 and wait for the 80GB model to come out in september(?) if you're not going to get a bundle. It's going to be the same price as a 40GB model.

Fifthly, yes get one. We can be online buddies :D

Just consider carefully, I don't want anyone wasting their money on something they regret (like me and my Wii >_>; ) so I suggest to wait for some things.

Hope I helped, and I look forward to meeting you on PSN (hopefully) :D

1) never disregard "trade in credit" as money. If you're a gamer, trade in credit IS money. Don't look at it like it costs 220, and not like 600 bucks, because it costs 300 bucks. You may only go in there with 200 bucks cash, but that other 300 dollars is still 300 dollars you could spend on other stuff there.

2) I don't have a PS3 myself, but I'd wager MGS4 is about your best bet. I've never even looked into LittleBigPlanet, but it sounds like a nexgen animal crossing.

3) Blu-ray is ONLY useful if you have an HDTV. If you don't, it's not even worth considering. If you do, you should be able to make this decision yourself - do you like HD? do you see a difference? will you be buying Blu-ray from now on rather then DVD? I really don't think blu-ray is a great selling point for the PS3, but that's me. I'm interested in a gaming system that plays games.

4) Backwards compatibility is, and always has been, a joke. There are some exceptions, like the VC/KBL ports, but for the most part, a newer system has to run some hogwash emulation program, which they can never do as well as your computer, and PS2s are literally a dime a dozen, so don't factor in that.

I have nothing else to say though, I voted no, I'm not too interested in the PS3, although I ADORED my PS2. I've jumped on the Xbox wagon on this leg of the console war.

lol... I just realized how nonsensical my first response was... but I *THINK* I got my message across.

edit: and I know i'm going to get eaten alive by PS3 fanboys, I don't really care. I'm not an Xbox fanboy myself, even though that's the horse I rode in on. It gives me my gaming fix, and some "exclusives" I enjoy.

This is going to turn into a PS3 bashing thread. Dur. Threads like these to be honest...SUCK.

It's a matter of opinion. I don't mean to be mean or rude, but your going to get a mixed message here.

I own a PS3 and love it. If you want to play 360 games, get a gaming PC. They don't cost that much. $750 bucks will pay for a gaming PC that can run all current gen games at max settings.

I've not even played a PS3 so I can only give you general advice.

First off I would wait until there's more than a few games to warrant you buying a new console, but put aside money every week so you'll have more to spend when you finally buy it with at least 3 exclusive games.

Also personally I wouldn't buy a used console, something doesn't feel right about that.
I mean if it's so good why did the original owner get rid of it in the 1st place. Also you've no assurances about how well the first owner looked after it & I'm not sure if it would be covered by the manufacturer's warranty.

Like all electronics purchases, the longer you wait & save up money before you buy it, then the better value for money you'll get when you finally make the purchase, with price drops & promotions with big name releases etc.

I've owned all 3 of the current-gen consoles and the PS3 is the only one I still have around my house. I'm not going to lie and say it blows away everything else or any bullshit like that, to be honest, I didn't notice a lot of difference in the graphics between 360 and PS3. At least, not at first.

The PS3 doesn't really shine unless you hook it up using HDMI to an HDTV capable of at least 720p, but 1080i is preferred. When I finally broke down and bought some cables and hooked my systems up fully HD(I'd been using component, they are good, but the colors are a bit muddy), I started to notice subtle differences in the graphics.

I mean, it's nothing to write home about, but the PS3 does have a slight edge due to how it upscales the game's native resolution to match the selected resolution on your TV(1080i for me). But, graphics don't make a game, so I only provided that information as a commentary on the slight edge the machine has in that department.

As far as games go, the 360 has a bigger library, but the PS3 has some better exclusives. It really boils down to what you like to play. Honestly, I bought my PS3 simply to be ready for Final Fantasy XIII(before it was announced it would go 360 cross-platform), but I started to get into some of the games for it and really started to like the system.

All things being equal, the game experience is fairly identical on both systems, so it really boils down to controller preference or other needs. The 360 has Live in it's favor, but Live costs money. The PS3 has blu-ray going for it and PSN is free, and may someday be really neat if they ever get Home released.

Another thing to consider is do you think you'll ever want blu-ray capability in your house? If so, get the PS3 for that very reason. Sure, you could go buy a blu-ray player, but dig this...the blu-ray laser in the PS3 is better quality than any but the most expensive stand-alone blu-ray players, and it's cheaper than those high quality players. So, in essence you get a great blu-ray player and an added bonus of being able to play some great games thrown in for free.

There's one last issue you need to be made aware of regarding the PS3 that was very important to me, so it might matter to you. If you want it to be backwards compatible with PS2 games(all models do PS1) you're going to have to get a used console. Sony has taken all the models that will play PS2 games out of production, so you can't get them new anymore.

There is a really easy way to tell if the system will play PS2 games though, just look at the USB ports on the front of it. If it has 4 it'll get the PS2 job done, but if it only has 2 it's not a PS2 capable model.

The biggest thing to think about when considering a new console is games, obviously. Not just one game, though, rather the style of games you play. If you like FPSs over any other genre, don't get a PS3. It's that simple.

The PS3 has Resistance, which is a great game, but still, the controller isn't tailored towards FPSs like the 360's is.

If you want a great mix of genres, and have quite a few games in mind that you'd want for the PS3, I'd say go for it. If you want it for LBP alone, I'm not so sure.

Personally, a PC/XBox 360 set-up covers me for every genre I like, and the only exclusive I'm really going to miss is GoW 3 - which I can deal with.

I'm in exactly the same position as you, I adored my PS2 but now own & adore my 360.

I had a enough money saved up to get either a 360 or PS3, and I was never convinced about the PS3. There was just something about it that put me off (maybe I couldn't get my head around the claim of 4D graphics?!) & something that told me it wouldn't be as fun as my PS2.
Plus I had 3 PS2's die on me with no help from Sony, so I wasn't going to risk that happening when spending PS3 amounts of money.

Unless there's a PS3 Shadow Heart's game & God Hand game, I don't think I'll regret my decision.

How the fuck is the 360 controller tailored for FPS's? That is the biggest load of bullshit I have EVER heard.

Seriously? I thought it was mutually understood that the 360 was the better console for FPSs. And I also thought I was pretty careful in my wording, as not to say the PS3 sucked for FPSs.

Think about it...

No.Hush. The fact that you can't explain the logic behind that retarded statement proves you have no idea what your talking about.

Sony had the BALLS to advertise.. 4D graphics?

tell me you're making this up so I don't have to get a flamethrower and torch the closest Sony building (which I think is a stereo store in my Mall) because I will do it.

WTF? The 360's library is absolutely dominated by FPSs. I'd really enjoy it if you let me know what the hell you are getting all worked up over. The 360 is better for FPSs. That's not even a fan boy statement, it's common knowledge.

Wait a minute. You argued that the controller was optimized for FPS, and now you change your mind and say it just has more FPS' than any other console and therefore is better. I know I'm not a part of this, but I'm confused too.

The 360 controller is a little more responsive as it has better... springy things in the analogs. It takes a little more effort to push them in a given direction, giving you more control over how far they are pushed. They seem a little more sensitive too, like they have a smaller distance between "not moving" and "moving" The triggers are better too, because they start angled and end up perpendicular, instead of starting perpendicular and ending up angled towards you. The PS3 controllers' triggers just don't have the same oomph.

But wait, that's comparing it to the sixaxis. Which was garbage.

How's the Dualshock 3 about all that?

If you're anything like me you have a yearning to own every console that's ever been released. Me and my boyfriend are slowly getting there. Together we own a PS, a PS2, a Gamecube, a Wii, a 360, we're buying a DS soon. Anyway, yes, that's my verdict.

Altorin: I shit you not, I saw some really pretentious artsy-farty PS3 advert with the claim of 4d graphics, yet I'm having trouble finding it at the moment. Maybe it was retracted when they realised how preposterous it sounded.

Aries Split: I also heard the 360 controller was "tailored" for FPS games, something to do with the offset analogue sticks, positioning of the d-pad & shoulder triggers, although I'm not sure I buy it myself & I'm not arguing the fact, just repeating what I heard/read.
