I just saw a thread saying that Bungie will be making some sort of MMO.

Obviously as everyone knows the Halo franchise is no longer controlled by Bungie, but it seems some misinterpereted that it would be an MMO set in the Halo universe.
This definately wouldn't make much sense, but it did for me raise an interesting question.

Where would the Halo series go if it was continued?

Would you like to see an MMO, a game from the Covenant point of view, the early days of the Human-Covenant War, games based on the books, a proper ending to the trilogy, the
Forerunner-Flood War or something else entirely?

I think a game, or a new series should be made around the Forerunner-Flood War.
Seeing as it was the reason for the rings in the games name and there is practically nothing known about the Forerunners and so far the Flood have for the most part been done very, very badly, that a game or games in this part of the Halo universe would be interesting, and if done properly would give the games a real backstory other than what has been done in the books.

Thats the thing about Halo, the only things that even make it seem like an entire world are the books while the games themselves generally have poor storytelling and show little outside of the corridors you fight in.

A game like this could correct that.

Anyways, discuss stuff below.

EDIT: It seems people are missing the point, this new Halo game, whatever you want it to be can be entirely new, not just a retread of everything that has already been done.

There is plenty of room for a fun new Halo game in its uncharted universe, I wish people would stop seeming to assume that nothing can come out of it other than regenerating health and power armoured soldiers killing aliens, just because its what we've gotten before.

I wish even more that people everywhere would stop saying "let it die with dignity" all the time. If Halo dies thats a lot of potential for expansion and creation down the drain.

I personally want a movie not another game, Halo Reach will last me a life time until people stop playing online, but I'm sure by then people will have something even more awesome to play.

The Halo series should stop. Together with other series, we've been getting a lot of sequels in recent years and for as much as I love some of them, it's getting really boring not having more new and original games to play, I'm actually starting to miss them.

Personally I too, would prefer to just see Halo end with Reach, as the story has been completely covered.

However, if I had to make a pick here it would most certainly be the events of the Human/Covenant war but from the Covenant perspective. The Arbiter's story in Halo 2 opened up a world of potential for great stories, themes, characters and locations across the Halo universe with an entirely new spin on perception but very little has been done in regard to it.
Let's see stories about the Elites in the Covenant for a change, let's have the game follow the story of many elites at various key points in the Covenant's history, from when it was forged to the point where it finally fell apart and all points in between.
The way I see it, it could be a great and epic game, with lots of ways to reinvent the image of the franchise in the process and give it an entirely new look and feel.

There is something to be said for the idea of playing as the Covenant fighting humanity, and finally understanding in depth how their society works and belief structure fits.

I cannot really see a Halo movie working very well, at least not one focused on the main series, though I suppose it could be used to sort of expand upon everything in the Halo universe overall.

No. More. Halo.

Yes, the games are great fun with a bunch of mates, the graphics and designs are amazing and the music can be very nice. But you CANNOT deny the story is pretty damn awful.

OH NO. ALIENS. THEY HATE US BECAUSE WE ARE AGAINST THEIR RELIGION AND THEY'VE GONE ALL JIHAD ON US. OH NO! ZOMBIES! QUICK, USE THE GIANT FLOATING RINGS THAT KILL EVERYTHING EXCEPT WHAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO.

No. The story is very bad. I used to be a massive Halo fan back in the day. Hell, I played the first and second ones every day, read some of the books. I even have a Master Chief action figure less than two feet away from me. But enough is enough.

Bungie is talented enough to come up with something wonderful and original. Why not delve back into the world of fantasy? Or why not remake the Marathon series? Brilliant concepts and storyline right there, just waiting to be explored further.

Nah, Halo shouldn't be continued. It's done its run.

No, I don't think Halo should be continued. I never liked it, only the spoofy nonsense that came from it as a result of Machinima. That said, I will now escape the impending attack of all Halo fans thusly.

But a new game done properly could rectify all that, lets say the Halo creators get some kick ass writers and are able to make a brilliant story in some section of the universe.
What aspect would you have them do? Something new that hasnt been done before would be brilliant.

But as said before, if its done properly.

The human side of things has already been done to death. Again and again, so enough of that.

Halo 2's Arbiter sections had a lot of potential, but as you said did very little in regard to it.

If that potential were realised and acted on it would be awesome, but if the Elites were to say "Fight with honour!'insert more 'heroic' quotes here' etc" all the time without giving them any real depth it would suck.

There's more to Halo than just a franchise and brand, which is a lesson Microsoft will probably learn the hard way. It's hard to describe in words, but what sets Halo apart from other shooters is how it plays. It's really smooth, all the components flow together perfectly, and it just feels right. I doubt another studio is capable of capturing that same feel and personality of the Halo games, and anyway, where else does this story have left to go? Dredge up the tale of some random Spartan we've never heard of before and make a game out of it? Pass.

How unexpected! A forum filled with PC elitists thinks Halo shouldn't go on!

Next they'll say Valve is good or something. Shocking!

i love that people say "halo needs to die so that we can get more original games" when

1. we are talking about shooters here, they really dont get super original without delving into another genre and

2. halo only takes away from the sale of "original" games if they are stupid enough to release their game the same week halo does

so please stop saying halo is killing the FPS genre. its a fun game with addicting multiplayer (nobody can deny that fact) and i say let the halo series continues because, like darwinism, it will either keep existing because no other games can compete with its amazing multiplayer or (as im sure most of you would enjoy this option) the series forces some new game to push the boundaries and create something nobody else thought was possible and completely demolish the halo series

with this kind of short sightedness we might as well say we need to stop playing WoW because it doesnt allow other MMO's to show what they have to offer. its called competition guys and our capitalistic society thrives on it

I'm one of the biggest Halo Fans around, I have all the Games books and Comics, Fuck the Anime, and I think the games should End. Reach was awesome. We don't need MS ruining the series. Like Yahtzee said, if the original creators don't want to continue the series then It should be put to rest.

Yeah, I get it. Everybody hates sequels. But you know what? Halo has a massive universe of fiction that has still gone largely unexplored, and compared to franchises like "Final Fantasy", it's still in it's infancy. Besides, why the hell did they put that little teaser at the end of Halo 3 if they weren't going to go anywhere with it?

And really, the ending of Halo Reach just didn't do it for me. I was expecting something as or more epic then Halo 3's ending, but....it was just disappointing. Even the muliplayer of that game just seems to be trying to capitalize on the "realism" fad the Call of Duty brought in(player classes, weaker players). I'd rather have the series end on a high note. Make another game with a campaign as epic as Halo 3's (shouldn't be that hard, it wasn't that epic) with identical multiplayer, but with the Forge options of Halo Reach and I'll be happy.

Yesno.

Noyes.

I'm confused.

Wait.. yes. But games based on other areas of the mythos. Say, hundred years back. Or in another part of the galaxy, where Halo was found by some other civilisation.
