So long as you are responsible with alcohol, I personally have no problem with lowering the drinking age.

From an outsiders perspective it seems that the US has a great deal of taboo over drinking for some completely random reason (see prohibition)- while most of europe has a pretty strong tradition of drinking. A lot of European countries have no drinking age at all, or only some arbitrarily low one, and even then the rest usually allow beer or wine for 16 year olds (even uptight Britain in some circumstances).

I think the real question though is why are people who aren't considered responsible enough to drink still considered responsible enough to vote?

The obvious answer is to raise the voting age (and driving and everything else) to 21!
Because of the temperance movement and MADD.

While your correct that the majority seem to enjoy alcohol, the majority also beleive dinosaurs were an elaborte farce by an omnipotent force that never does anything tangible and created the universe. They also beleive the average gamer is 16 and that violent videogames lead to violent actions but TV/cinema is OK. Most of them dont know who Hitler was and beleive King Arthur was real.

The majorities opinion might not be the best rule of thumb to take into account, especially since the majority would like to hold onto alcohol as a crutch for their depressing dreary empty lives.

I see your point but honestly 99% of people cant hold their drink and shouldnt be allowed to drink. If youve ever said the words 'I blacked out' , 'Where am I' or 'Who are you & where are my pants' you should be barred for life (mebbe a three strikes and your barred rule thats fairer)
I blacked out after the first line of this ridiculous hyperbole laden post. Seriously, do you actually believe half the stuff you just posted or were you lying out your arse?

What's it going to be? Dumbass, or liar?

Personally, I think it depends on the people drinking. If you are responsible enough and don't just get completely wasted, destroy your liver, crash your car and die then it's okay, it's just the people you see on cop shows in Britain and America who just get completely wasted and crash their cars on the motorway who are the major risk to the country, and their also the cause for giving such a high drining age.

It's not the age that's the problem it's how reckless the person is drinking, regardless of age is.

As much as I would love to say no, my libertarian side says yes. Provided that said teenager doesn't harm anyone else I have no problem with drinking. It's when you get smashed at a friends and drive home, wreck, and kill three people that I have issue with. I'm of the position that causing deaths while drunk should be considered murder.

Yeah, but if it was legal, you could call a cab, or some relative to pick you up without fear of punishment.

You can do that anyways, I don't think a cabbie is going to take you home and have the cops waiting for you, same with relatives.

I was going for troll, but it looks like youve taken that position. Enjoy your report.
Will do sport, but you reporting me doesn't change the fact that your post didn't have any semblance of a rational thought in it, any factual basis for any of its allegations, or any evidentiary support.

Well I know your relatives wont call the cops but they will be royaly pissed, but they might be anyway even if it was legal.

too many stupid people.... The age should, in reverse, be higher
This. I know there are a lot of responsible teens but for every responsible teen, there's four idiots.

Driving while intoxicated is one of the main causes of death in teenagers, so no, I do not think the drinking age should be lowered.

Well, teenagers seem like bad enough drivers as is (no offense, even though I am one. Maybe it's just where I live...) I can't help but think alcohol will make it worse. But I guess that's just me.

i think we should lower the age to drink, but raise the age to drive to 21.

that will mess the statistics up.

I say yes, just because I think if you can sign your life away to the military or buy a carton of cigarettes what the freaking point in denying alcohol? In my experience, hitting the legal drinking age makes the people who are stupid about it, suddenly decide it's not so rebelliously awesome and cut back.
