So as most of you may heard through the internet grape vine that wrestling has been dropped from the Olympics. but as someone who occasionally watches the Olympics this pegs me as odd since i though the Olympics were all about sports like wrestling and such. so to here that its being removed confuses me.but from what i have read the only reason its being removed is because its not as popular as the other sports and is being replaced with something more popular. so should wrestling be removed from the Olympics just because its not as popular as the other sports or should it remain.

Really? They drop wrestling but not something like dressage? I never really watched the wrestling in the olympics but can understand why it is in there and see no reason why it should have been dropped. The reason I mentioned dressage is because it is one of the sports that shuts out smaller countries (cost of owning competition horses can be upwards of $50,000 could be more, I don't really know), I mean most competitors in the equestrian were British, American, Australian and various western European countries. Then there is also the fact that wrestling comes down to the athletes skill and physical prowess while horse riding usually helps when you have the better horse.

It's the one where a horse just trots around in a square for a few minutes, probably one of the most painfully boring things to watch.

It's fucking horse dancing. An elitist "sport" that doesn't show anything about the human condition or spirit. Wrestling is an OG sport in the games and I don't want to live in a world where horse dancing or competitive walk racing are in the Games while one of the originals is dropped.

Mitt Romney owns a dressage horse. How can you call the sport elitist when this salt-of-earth, common-man possesses one?

His horse Rafalca overcame adversity and tragedy to place 20th in the Olympics. I smell a made for tv movie, highlighting the drama and human spirit of a man who would be president....and loved his dancing horse.

Ridiculous. Wrestling was one of the original Olympic sports - they will probably replace it with Darts or something. What a crock of shite, the ancient Greeks would be turning in their graves/tombs.

Or another variation of track racing. How many are there now? Fifty something? I mean, sure you might be a fast runner, but can you run AND pass a stick to someone else? What about at a quarter kilometre? Okay now a half kilometre. Okay now a quarter kilometre again but you have to jump over a bunch of bars.

Greeks would flip in their graves. How dare we then call it the Olympics if we have cut out Wrestling?

Hey leave the winter olympics out of this, the colder countries really like them D:

I lived in Newfoundland when team gunshue (canadian curling team) won the gold medal.. they let every school in the province out early to go watch the last game. Shits big here xD

And it doesn't seem right that they'd take out one of the original olympic sports, but mma would pretty nice to see there

- Synchronized Swimming

Pretty much all team sports or sports that require specialized equipment (that can be of different standards depending on the country competing) should be dropped or relegated to a secondary type of competition. Let's get back to track & field for the gold, silver and bronze and have all the other sports as spectator events. I mean really, who gives a shit for Olympic soccer/football over the World Cup? Not the athletes, that's for sure.

Sports drop in and out of the Olympics over time. It would never be possible to include every sport that everyone wants to watch, so some sports have to drop out for some years in order to give other sports a chance.

There are only five sports that have been included in every modern Olympics: athletics, cycling, swimming, gymnastics and fencing.

The argument for removing Wrestling makes zero sense.

Not enough countries? Equestrian had 26 in 2012, Wrestling had 71.

Not popular enough? More people attended the medal matches for wrestling then for fencing, trampolining, equestrian, and judo COMBINED.

Not enough history? Don't even go there (IT WAS LITERALLY THE FIRST OLYMPIC SPORT)

As long as competitive trampolining, pentathlon, synchronized swimming, and equestrian are in, it's a joke. Any one of those four could be removed for Wrestling.
Seems like the problem is in the television. They show the sports that some people are interested in (gymnastics, track and field) but fail to show the sports that others want. I for one would watch the heck out of wrestling, fencing, and judo if they televised them on the network channels. Frankly, they need to cut back on the thirty minutes of commercials every hour and replace them with worthwhile programming.

Maybe someone should reopen the real olympics, in honour of the gods of Olympus...
With all and only the original sports... Like running a marathon in full armour.
And rituals.
Including the ritual cleansing if you accidenily killed your opponent in a boxing match.

Because obviousyly these fakelympics are fake.
By Zeus!

And now a little bit more serious.
I definitely agree that they shouldn't drop a sport because of popularity.

There's a gay joke in here somewhere but I don't know in which direction to go. Anyway, wrestling has been a part of the Olympics since its inception, so no it shouldn't be dropped for ratings. Its not like it will help at all, most Olympic sports are a fucking chore to watch and only exciting if you are super into sports or are an athlete in that field.

This is pretty spot on I only have free to air television and the amount of meaningless replays, swimming and equestrian show was a fucking joke. I mean they would cut from a hockey game just to show some pointless swimming heat that didn't even have an Australian in! (I'm from Australia which is why that is annoying.)

I tried to watch as much as possible but barely saw any indoor volleyball or handball which is a disgrace because we never get to see any of them here normally. Instead we got countless replays of heats and hours upon hours of equestrian.
