Poll: *Sigh* Zelda Skyward Sword isn't exactly Cel-Shaded, and I don't think it should be realistic

Why the hell should it matter what art style they use??? It's Zelda, damnit! You play them because they are fun, not because they are cel shaded or realistic! It doesn't matter what art style they use as long as you can tell what's going on.

And that trailer looks awesome. You know what, I recall everything I ranted about in other threads. I don't care if they don't come out with an option for classic controls, I don't care if there's not an option to play left handed...I FUCKING WANT THAT GAME!

I... uh.. im just going to get this out of the way, Windwaker should be the best Zelda in the series. It took what OOT did good and made it better, plus had a really good emphasis on story and made a grand epic tale that was fun to play.

OT: Any i seriously dont get people and graphics, Sure TP was amazing to look at but i didn't really care that much, Ive played realistic looking games and "cartoony" and from my top ten list i can assure you i like the cartoony games that dont focus on graphic. WHY cant anyone else do this? seriously graphics are important to a degree but not what a game should be about.

It looks like a combination of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. Not sure how I feel about it..They were both great in their own right, but their amalgamation seems to look a bit..soulless.

I am a little disapointed with my fellow escapists. We complain about every game being the same and wanting artistic merit to our games and companies playing it safe. But then when Nintendo, which is THE big gaming company, goes in an original artistic direction we not only pass it off without a second glance as being out of date and drab and unoriginal, we also wish that they had stayed with Twilight Princess's style. Which was not realistic, it was an anime style. The sharp lines, the exaggerated over the top monster detail, the over the top insane characters. In the old games we had insane characters, but they had the decency to act insane (The organ grinder, the poe seller, Skull Kid, etc..) Twilight Princess was dull and unoriginal. It took itself way too seriously, and it had the same anime style that's been used to death in adventure games by that point. We should be thanking Nintendo for choosing to break the norm of most game studios with it's bold art direction and detail and care for setting a games tone. Not wishing it was "Ocarina of time, but with..."

I don't get it.

Ghaphics!? Who cares about that, New Zelda, New Game, end of story. People complain how the game looks? Brush them off, they live in the dark.

I love the Skyward Sword graphics. The main argument against the new style seems to be that it's not gritty or depressing enough like TP.

At the very least you can appreciate that the new art style improves the gameplay.

I love it already. It looks like a vibrant mix of Windwaker's art style and Twilight Princess's art design. I can't wait for this game.

My problem with Skyward sword, is, the graphics are way too similar to Windwaker. I had somewhat hoped for at least twilight princess graphics. Every Zelda console game EXCEPT for Windwaker and Majora's Mask had improved upon the graphics of the game before it, and seeing this as a step backwards in terms of graphics is a little frustrating. What's interesting is that every game since majora's mask, has unfortunately imitated Majora's Mask art style. What would be nice to see is a game that reflects the old style of Link to the Past/Ocarina of Time.

Old style Zelda: The Legend of Zelda (NES), Link to the Past(SNES), Ocarina of Time(N64)
New style Zelda: Majora's Mask, Windwaker, Twilight Princess
But that's just it; this does just that. It's the bastard child of both Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. It sits between realism and cartoon-ish vibrancy. The textures look flat because that's the art style they went with, so it looks like it was painted. They can bring back some of the more beautiful looking locales and quirky looking enemies from the old Zelda games, while adopting the more realistic look of the new ones.

Why is this a step back in terms of graphics? Because there is less detail? Good graphics don't always have to be detailed and sharp, that's not what this art style or post impressionism was about.

Cell shading isn't very impressionistic. Impressionism is all about taking a step back away from the image to enjoy the picture. Cell-shading is the elimination of texture in order to arrive at a cartoony look. Which worked fantastic for Windwaker, because Nintendo was trying to make a cartoony game with Wind waker. But if they're trying to make an impressionist game, then eliminating textures isn't going to help any.
Link looks a bit like Riza Hawkeye from that picture. Jus sayin'.

It looks a bit like the Psychonauts art style, minus the misshapen people. A lot of people I talk to think THAT'S cel-shaded, too...

"as their art was less about realism, detail and perfection, and more about colours and vibrancy, broken brush strokes instead of perfectly formed lines. "

This makes it a great art-style to draw inspiration from, as it stands for the same idea.

Personally, I'd LOVE a windwaker2

Zelda fans are never satisfied because they want to play Ocarana of time again (since apparently that is the best thing ever) but they don't want to play the same thing again. They want two contradictory thing so they can never be satisfied. As for Wind Waker, I like the art style but sells numbers reflect the fact that people didn't go for it. Why? The fans are all afraid of being called childish for liking a game with cartoony graphics. Those fans can all bury there heads ion the sand and pretend its 1998 and they just got there N64 but I'm looking forward. Wind Waker was cool and unique and the graphics due to there cartonny nature were not only some of the best I've seen but will hold up very well over time. N64 graphics... well they look like paper mache monsters. I like the new art design, very bright and vibrant and it reflects the fun and light nature of the series. In the end so long as the game is fun it doesn't matter though.

I thought that was already made three years ago.

Also, am I the only one who noticed the new art style's reminiscence of that old demo from when the Gamecube was in development? It seems to be going for the same sort of colour palette.

No not spirit tracks, I mean a AAA wii game with at least enough resources to actually make out what's on the screen, with the same camera angle etc.

And I still think Link to the Past and Link's Awakening are the two best games of the series.
I agree entirely. At least I'm not the only one who'd be happy if the next game actually had eight dungeons and a real controller.

OT - The graphics aren't awful, but they don't do anything for me, either. Just... meh.

Personally, I liked the cel-shaded style of Wind Waker the most. Combined with a world that still feels epic and vast, theres also some irony in the fact that people want realistic graphics to make things more expressive and emotive- but the cel-shaded style is probably the most expressive style for Link and his world.

Twilight Princess was good, but always had a nagging feeling of Ocarina of Time deja vu.

My biggest problem was that everyone was saying The New Zelda (Skyward Sword) was going to be something new and different that we haven't seen before- and when I saw the trailer, I wasn't disappointed with the graphics, just that the art style remains the same. I guess I expected that when we were hearing from Miyamoto and others that TP would be the "last Zelda game of that formula, before something different" I was expecting something... different. Not a new coat of paint and tweaks to the story that the series has become notorious for.
Even my favorite, Wind Waker, is guilty of that, in the end.

It looks like they skimped on the graphics and tried to cover it up with BS about art style. I admire them for trying to create a new style, but they must realise that it looks like a N64 game.

I really like it, it's semi cartoony which I think is fitting for zelda games without looking all weird like wind waker. Either way I could care less about graphics as long as the game play is awesome which I'm sure it will be. :D
